‘An Inconvenient Truth' For New Yorker Readers
By RUSSELL BERMAN
November 20, 2006
http://www.nysun.com/article/43790

For some subscribers to the New Yorker, this week's edition brought an added bonus to the customary fill of cartoons, fiction, and news features: Stuck in the middle was a free DVD of Vice President Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth."

The diskette, encased in cardboard and plastic wrapping, is taped to an advertisement promoting the film's DVD release tomorrow, with the tag line, "Own, Watch and Share It." A message on the inside of its cardboard cover urges recipients to watch, "share," and "donate" the film.

The magazine could not confirm last night how many of its 1.06 million subscribers received the DVD, but a source said it may have been sent to a select subscriber group of about 1,500 "influential members of business, government, and the media." The source said it could also have been distributed regionally to subscribers in New York and Los Angeles, perhaps as part of a campaign to drum up Oscar buzz.

By Amy Zimmer

http://ny.metro.us/metro/local/article/Feminist_lessons_learned_at_home/5775.html

The recent death of journalist, feminist and cultural critic Ellen Willis sparked a flurry of tributes from writers who have been influenced by her, including her daughter Nona Willis-Aronowitz, an editorial fellow at Salon.com. Metro talked to Willis-Aronowitz, 22, about family life, journalism and feminism.

Taken from Mediabistro.com:

The recent death of journalist, feminist and cultural critic Ellen Willis sparked a flurry of tributes from writers who have been influenced by her. Willis was the New Yorker's first pop music critic, an editor at the Village Voice, and an NYU journalism professor. Her daughter, Nona Willis-Aronowitz, an editorial fellow at Salon.com, talks about her mother's career.

MORE LUXE: With the success that magazines such as Departures have had in luxury advertising, it's no wonder competition is heating up in the category. Time is joining the race in January, with Kate Betts overseeing a new luxury section that will appear in the magazine 14 times a year. Taylor Gray, Time's publishing director, said the special section will go out to 800,000 targeted subscribers with "editorial relating to the luxury marketplace." A magazine spokeswoman said the layouts will be approximately eight to 16 pages of ads and editorial. "It's a good way to get more luxury advertisers in the magazine," she admitted. In addition, the new issue of Betts' Time Style & Design, which comes out today, will feature a luxury index of the biggest trends.

NUMBERS PLEASE: Mediamark Research Inc. released its fall magazine audience estimates last week, meaning publishers will be touting a whole new set of metrics proclaiming to advertisers how much younger, richer and bigger their audiences are. Of the men's fashion and lifestyle titles, Esquire saw the largest gain in median household income, jumping to $68,685 from $59,104 last fall, while GQ's median income fell to $63,180 from $67,144. Nevertheless, the title's riches are easily explainable. Esquire's median age is a decade older than GQ's — 43.5 years compared with 33.1 years.

PERSONAL STYLIST: As People ramps up publication of StyleWatch to 10 times annually from five this year, the spin-off will get its first dedicated editor, Susan Kaufman. She joined People in 2002 to work on StyleWatch in the weekly magazine, then worked on the spin-off and other People specials, such as the Oscar issue and has worked on photo galleries for people.com. Prior to joining People, Kaufman was fashion director at Mademoiselle and creative director, beauty and fashion, at Us when the title moved to a weekly publication from monthly.

By Todd Wasserman, Brandweek

Magazine publishers, tired of being lumped in with “old media,” are embracing one of the newest media, mobile text messaging.

Thanks to a new technology from a New York firm called ShopText and eBay unit PayPal, consumers this holiday season have the option of buying and sampling some products with their cell phones.

Magazines like Details, CosmoGIRL!, Glamour and Brides are rolling out ads with short codes for text-to-buy transactions. ShopText also worked with Lucky magazine for a program in the publication’s September issue.

ReadyMade Enjoys Meredith's Ad Bounty
By Lauren Charlip
November 20, 2006
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003409763

If you combine the resourcefulness and domestic ingenuity of Martha Stewart, the fearless power-tool savvy of Bob Vila and the edgy pop-cultural virtuosity of Fader, you have the profile of a ReadyMade reader: a crafty Gen X/Gen Yer who tackles projects large and small, from potholders embroidered with a skull and crossbones to a set of homemade “high design” bookshelves.

The title is hard to categorize; the closest anyone has come is DIY/Lifestyle. “We’re not aspirational, we’re inspirational,” explained CEO/publisher Grace Hawthorne. Perhaps its Web site tagline best articulates its mission: “A bimonthly print magazine for people who like to make stuff.”

Such a readership—well-educated and tech-and design-savvy—was very attractive to Meredith Corp., which announced Nov. 2 the close of its acquisition of ReadyMade.

Polishing the Good Housekeeping Seal
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE
November 20, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/20/business/media/20housekeeping.html?ref=media

Want a television in the kitchen, without adding clutter? There are now refrigerators with a TV built right into the door.

But do they work? Can they chill the milk and show “Desperate Housewives” at the same time? Will the electric bill go through the roof?

Such modern-day domestic quandaries are sorted out at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, the updated version of the magazine’s test lab, which opened last month in the glassy new Hearst tower in Midtown Manhattan. The lab issues the Good Housekeeping Seal to advertisers that can pass its tests and also conducts original research on household products for the magazine.

Man Law No. 10: No Wimpy Print Campaigns
By STUART ELLIOTT
November 20, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/20/business/media/20adcol.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

A MAGAZINE that often features the winners of beauty pageants in its editorial pages is running the results of a different kind of beauty pageant in its advertising pages.

The difference is that this beauty pageant was really a kind of a contest for the magazine’s readers, and the biggest winner was the magazine itself.

The December issue of FHM magazine carries the first installment of a campaign that seeks to translate into print the current series of “man laws” television commercials for Miller Lite beer. In the television campaign, well-known male role models like Burt Reynolds, the rodeo champion Ty Murray, the comedian Eddie Griffin and the boxer Oscar de la Hoya, sit around a square table and discuss a new code of conduct that manly men are meant to live by (example: don’t put lime — or any fruit — in your beer).

'SNL' Parody of the 'Toos Thankfully Omits Conehead Joke
By Gawker Staff

We're not sure when Atoosa Rubenstein became a figure of such renown that she merits a parody on Saturday Night Live, but this Maya Rudolph impersonation from Saturday's episode is probably the funniest thing that show has done in a decade. (And we know how desperate they are.) Extra points to the makeup people for not slapping on an oversized putty nose or arm hair. One quibble: no fried shrimp present.
