******* RUBENSTEIN AND RUBENSTEIN: What do former editor in chiefs do when they're trying to launch a new career? Well, if you're Atoosa Rubenstein, you hire a high-powered public relations firm. After the former editor in chief of Seventeen quietly exited Hearst Tower last week, she quickly tapped Rubenstein Public Relations — known for its crisis management expertise (as in the current Michael Richards brouhaha) — as her official mouthpiece for whatever she plans to do next. Rubenstein said Maya Israel of the Rubenstein company has been added to the mix because she has "lots going on." Rubenstein previously told WWD that she plans to begin a consultancy to reach teen audiences, as well as speaking engagements. She is also working on a memoir/instructive book. Now Seventeen, sans Rubenstein, is on the hunt for its next editor in chief. Amy Goldwasser, formerly of New York Magazine and freelancer at Vogue, and Ann Shoket, executive editor at Cosmogirl, are still apparently in the running. A decision could come before mid-December. ONE VOICE RULES: To say the first issue of the relaunched BlackBook bears the stamp — or iron grip — of its new editor, Steve Garbarino, is perhaps putting it lightly. Garbarino wrote both feature well stories for the December/January issue, profiling Val Kilmer and doing the cover interview with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts. (Garbarino said, without embarrassment, that he picked up a certain coziness with the celeb scene after "several years of living behind the Chateau Marmont….If I have a relationship, as the editor, I need to utilize it for the magazine, much as Ingrid Sischy might.") He wrote "every piece of the display copy in the magazine — because that establishes a voice." The upper reaches of the masthead have also been remade in his image: Ray Rogers, who worked with Garbarino at Interview, Detour and the New York Post, is the new features editor (former senior editor Jordan Heller found a new home at Radar), and Bryan Erickson is the new creative director.

With Thanksgiving under our belts, it's time to join in the year-end shopping rush. Lucky showcases all manner of enticing things to buy - "783 want-them-right-now" bargains. We loved these fashion picks, and the excellent style and look of the layouts. If only shopping itself were as friendly and appealing as the pages of Lucky. Rival Domino is a worthy pickup as well. For multitaskers who want to cram in a little home decorating ahead of the holidays, the mag - which bills itself as the guide to living with style - has tricks for doing it on the cheap, such as sprucing up metal. Elsewhere, we liked the reviews on speakers, ranging from petite desktop ones to home-theater powerhouses. Meanwhile, at Forbes, the mag has some interesting stuff buried in a standard "news you can use" personal finance issue. Its wide-ranging take on billionaire Ron Burkle makes buying it worthwhile. The New Yorker explores whether Lou Dobbs, CNN's anchor with rancor, is worth his $6 million paycheck. Calling him a cross between Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan, the article points out that while his ratings may be soaring, his anti-business opinions could hurt his employer's credibility. Elsewhere, the mag reports that Sen. Arlen Specter is unhappy about having voted to deny habeas corpus rights to Guant?namo Bay detainees. The Republican from Pennsylvania hopes the Supreme Court will shoot down the legislation. MORE ONLINE

With Thanksgiving nigh, let us take a break from the journo-scolding for a moment to give thanks for something that American journalism is doing well of late: allocating resources to examining the ways in which the bottom of the top 1 percent of American earners envy the top of the top 1 percent of earners. As Gawker pointed out yesterday, the New York Times appears to be "fomenting class war between the least neediest," what with Tuesday's A1 article by Katie Hafner (headline, "In Web World, Rich Now Envy the Superrich") coming on the heels of Sunday's Week in Review piece by Eric Konigsberg (headline, "A New Class War: The Haves vs. the Have Mores"). For her part, Hafner reported yesterday on "envy" as a "powerful driving force in Silicon Valley, where technical achievements are admired but financial payoffs are the ultimate form of recognition." And how do wealthy high-tech entrepreneurs cope with their envy of even wealthier peers? Hafner pointed to James Hong, a man so rich he never has to work again who nonetheless found himself "succumbing to the envy malaise," which he promptly checked by downgrading from a Porsche Boxster to a Toyota Prius, explaining: "I don't want to live the life of a Boxster, because when you get a Boxster you wish you had a [Porsche] 911 ... And you know what people who have 911s wish they had? They wish they had a Ferrari." MORE ONLINE 4. Fishbowl NYGraydon Carter: Neo-Conservative Architects Of Iraq War Angry With Vanity Fair 'Not The Worst Possible Thing' By Fishbowl Editors 11/28/06 http://mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/ Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, appearing on CNN's Reliable Sources to promote the Spy anthology with Kurt Andersen, addressed the controversy over Vanity Fair's publication of neo-conservative criticism of the war before the election: KURTZ: Graydon Carter, I do want to ask you about one controversy that "Vanity Fair" was involved in. Just days before the election, you put on-line a piece about prominent neo-conservatives who were criticizing President Bush and the conduct of the Iraq war. Some of them did not like the way that came out. Let me read to you a couple of comments and get your reaction. David Frum says "'Vanity Fair' added words outside the quote marks to change the plain meaning of quotations. The editors and publicists at 'Vanity Fair' have repackaged truths that a war-fighting county needs to hear into lies attempting to achieve a shabby partisan purpose." And Richard Perle says, "I had been promised that my remarks would not be published before the election. I should have known better than to trust the editors at 'Vanity Fair,' who lied to me." What do you make of those reactions? CARTER: Well, I think having the neo-conservatives who helped plan the war and support the war, be angry with the magazine is not the worst possible thing. David Frum's comments are completely incorrect. They were interviewed for the story, the story appears in the next issue of the magazine and we released it before the elections on VanityFair.com because we felt that, given the fact the president was using the war as a line in the sand for voters, and here you have the architects of the war saying it was a horrible mistake and completely bungled, we thought that was the public's right to know.

The American Society of Magazine Editors today said it is introducing three new categories, as well as modifications to some existing categories for next year’s National Magazine Awards. Beginning next year, the Photo Portfolio/Photo Essay category will be divided into two separate categories: Photojournalism and Photo Portfolio. Photojournalism will recognize the photographic documentation of an event or subject in real-time, while Photo Portfolio will honor creative photography and photo illustration, including portraiture, according to a statement from ASME. Two new online categories, Interactive Service and Interactive Feature, have been added to the contest. Interactive Service will recognize a service feature on the Web offering practical advice or instruction, while Interactive Feature will honor an editorial Web feature focusing on news, entertainment and other subjects. Both categories look at a site’s creative use of multimedia technology, user involvement, and personalization and community tools. Also, three categories that previously only accepted articles from print magazines will now accept online articles as well. The categories are: Essays; Columns and Commentary; and Reviews and Criticism.
