Time Out dismissal case settled
By Jason Deans and agencies
December 4, 2006
http://media.guardian.co.uk/presspublishing/story/0,,1963596,00.html

A wrongful dismissal action brought by the former managing director of Time Out magazine against founder Tony Elliott was settled at the high court on Friday.

Lesley Gill alleged that Mr Elliott's "hot and cold" attitude of founder had changed towards her by the beginning of December 2005 - just before she was summarily dismissed from her ?126,000-a-year post after 24 years with the company.

Ms Gill denied there had been an "irreconcilable breakdown" between herself and the Time Out board, particularly Mr Elliott, which was causing damage to the listing magazine's business.

Memo Pad

RETURNING HOME: Kent Brownridge is no Ron Galotti when it comes to being a gentleman farmer. While Galotti, the former Cond? Nast terror, headed north to Vermont and settled on a farm, Brownridge went south and took up residence full-time at his Virginia spread, Hazel River, after stepping down at the end of last year from his post as senior vice president, general manager, of Wenner Media. Brownridge owned the farm for six years and spent most weekends there, tending to his horses, when he was still working at Wenner. But three weeks ago, he sold the property for what he called "a pretty good price," and now has bought a place in bucolic Millbrook, N.Y. He also sold or gave away all his horses except for two, which he will board at a facility near his new digs.

VOGUE'S PATH TO INDIA: After Vogue China's launch last year, Cond? Nast is making another foray into Asia: An Indian edition of the magazine, to be based in Mumbai, will be launched for fall 2007. "India is not only one of the fastest-growing business markets in the world, but a subcontinent with a uniquely rich and fascinating culture," Nicholas Coleridge, vice president of Cond? Nast International, said in a statement.

NO SURPRISE: Following a deluge of stories and speculation, Mary Berner was officially named president and chief executive officer of Reader's Digest Association on Friday. Her appointment will take place when the acquisition of RDA by Ripplewood Holdings is completed, which is expected before mid-2007. Berner's brother, Robert Berner 3rd, is managing director at Ripplewood — although his name was curiously absent from the press release unveiling his sister's appointment.

Sunset Shines Light on Affluent Readers
By Lucia Moses
December 4, 2006
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003467556

The year was 1898, and the Southern Pacific Railroad had just opened routes to California. It needed to change the state’s image of a place to get rich quick but not to raise a family.

So the railroad started Sunset, which it filled with pictures of Western wonders like Yosemite and picturesque streets of Los Angeles. During its literary era in the 1910s, Sunset published works by the likes of Mark Twain and Sinclair Lewis; in the 1920s, it entered the service arena, giving new residents tips and information about hot tubs, ranch houses and other signatures of Western living.

Now, the 108-year-old monthly is hoping to capture the West again. With its January issue, Sunset, which Time Inc. acquired in 1990, will undergo an upscale makeover to grow awareness of the brand and cut its rate base to burnish a high-end image to advertisers. It will go to perfect-bound from saddle stitch, and adopt a wider trim size and richer paper stock, changes it will fund in part by dropping its rate base to 1.2 million from 1.45 million.

It's Official: Berner Named CEO of RDA
By Lucia Moses
December 4, 2006
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003467539

Morale has been low at Reader’s Digest Association, with many staffers feeling left in the dark about their prospective new owners. But some of the uncertainty was alleviated late last Friday when Ripplewood Holdings, the private-equity firm leading the investor group that plans to take RDA private, confirmed reports that former Fairchild Publications CEO Mary Berner would be the next president and CEO.

Eric Schrier plans to remain president/CEO until the proposed deal closes, and Ripplewood is in “serious discussions” with him about having him play a new strategic role at the company to help build a stronger portfolio, Ripplewood said in a statement. The statement also said Harvey Golub, Ripplewood’s executive chairman, will become chairman of RDA.

In an internal memo to employees, also issued at week’s end, Schrier stated that he supported the deal despite the uncertainty it meant for himself.

Forbes in Russia Becomes the Story Again
By Andrew E. Kramer
December 3, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/04/business/media/04forbes.html?_r=1&ref=media&oref=slogin

In a sign of the growing reach of Russia’s business elite, a billionaire tried — and for a time succeeded — in blocking an article in the Russian language edition of Forbes magazine which featured her on its cover.

The episode led to the resignation of Forbes’ editor in Russia last week and once again raised questions about intimidation of the press here.

Attorneys for Yelena Baturina, who runs a real estate and construction business empire that Forbes reported is worth $1.1 billion and who is also married to the mayor of Moscow, threatened to sue the German company that publishes Forbes in Russia, saying she was misquoted.
