Memo Pad: Have Mistletoe, Will Travel... New Look for News... Lucky Here (1st and 3rd items)
By Irin Carmon

HAVE MISTLETOE, WILL TRAVEL: For magazines, even the archetypally awkward office holiday party is an opportunity for brand positioning. So it is that Jane's invite for its party tonight opts for sassiness, picturing a woman riding an electronic bull accompanied by the words, "It's been a wild ride this year. Let's continue to grab the bull by the horns." (Jane is also apparently the only magazine party requiring staffers to go to Brooklyn, i.e. Williamsburg.) Meanwhile, Cookie has opted for cuteness, including kids and cookie-decorating at its holiday and first-anniversary party at Citibabes.

LUCKY HERE: Laurie Trott has joined Lucky as senior stylist after several months of freelancing there, replacing Jennifer Smith, who headed to Cookie. She was previously fashion director at Elle Girl. Lucky has also picked up its first full-time Web editor, Liz Humphreys, who had been managing editor at Waterfront Media in Brooklyn.

Elle at the Movies

While the movie awards season might still be a few months off, Elle is getting a head start by becoming the official media sponsor of Film Independent’s Spirit Awards, also known as the “hip Oscars.” This is the Hachette Filipacchi fashion title’s first foray into the awards ceremony, which will take place on February 24 in Santa Monica. What’s more, Elle has taken over the reigns held by Entertainment Weekly, which sponsored the awards for the last 12 years. “Elle has a long tradition of providing a platform for emerging women across the spectrum of the arts, much like many women filmmakers have been able to break new ground in independent film by telling smart stories with a unique point of view,” said Dawn Hudson, executive director of Film Independent. “This sponsorship with Elle will further our goals and those of the women that the magazine spotlights.”

The partnership is just another sign of Elle’s recent movie obsession; an article Julia Stiles wrote for the magazine’s October issue is being turned into her directorial debut, Raving, starring Zooey Deschanel and Bill Irwin. “Provocative, inspiring, sexy, fun: the Film Independent Spirit Awards mirror the Elle spirit on almost every level,” said Elle editor-in-chief Robbie Myers. “The magazine is honored to be a part of it.” This year’s nominees include fan favorite Little Miss Sunshine for Best Feature, Michelle Williams for Best Actress in Land of Plenty, and Aaron Eckhart for Best Actor in Thank You for Smoking.

"Entertainment Weekly is involved with many entertainment award shows and initiatives," said a spokesperson for the Time Inc. title. "We enjoyed being one of the sponsors of the Independent Spirit Awards for 12 years and we vary our sponsorship season by season. We do look forward to attending in 2007."

EDITOR'S BLUNDER IS A BEAUT
By Richard Johnson

http://www.nypost.com/seven/12052006/gossip/pagesix/editors_blunder_is_a_beaut_pagesix_.htm

ALLURE offers plenty of advice to its readers, but here's some for the beauty book's future staffers: Don't hawk products on eBay that were sent to the magazine for editorial use. Last week, assistant editor Molly Friedman was fired for selling beauty supplies that had been sent to Allure editors. Friedman had been working there for almost a year and was very recently promoted from her editorial assistant position. "She was asking makeup companies to send her products that hadn't hit stores yet, and she was selling them on eBay instead of putting them in the magazine," said our insider. "She's pretty much banned from Cond? Nast for life." Before joining the Allure team under Editor in Chief Linda Wells, Friedman worked for Absolute magazine. Another source familiar with the situation asked, "How can she do this? You think of Allure - they are the beauty magazine. It's pretty shocking." Friedman could not be reached.

Time Inc. Sale of 18 Titles Stalls
By Nat Ives

http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=113611

Time Inc.'s effort to sell 18 magazines has bogged down in delays, making potential buyers increasingly antsy and spoiling hopes of getting a deal in place by year-end. Second-round bids were originally due at the end of November, but Time Inc. was too slow supplying information for any contenders to do so, according to people involved. More information is coming this week and next, but now the next bids aren't expected before Jan. 2.

Nervous employees One contender said the slowdown is worrisome because personnel at the properties being sold -- comprising the Parenting Group and most of the Time4 Media titles, like Field & Stream and Popular Science -- are already nervous about their futures. The longer the sale process takes, the more time employees have to get resumes out. Time Inc. declined to comment.

Contenders in the second round are said to include Stockholm's Bonnier Magazine Group, which entered the U.S. five months ago when it bought a 49% stake in World Publications, publisher of titles like Saveur and Spa; Efrem "Skip" Zimbalist III, president-CEO at enthusiast publisher Active Interest Media and the former CEO of Times Mirror Magazines; former Time Inc. Exec VP Jack Haire, working with backing from Boston Ventures; J. Russell Denson, the onetime president-CEO of Gruner & Jahr USA; and Kent Brownridge, the former No. 2 at Wenner Media who is looking for a way back into the magazine business.

Land your dream job -- or at least get in the door
By Jaclyn Greenberg

http://journalism.ukings.ca/journalism_3673_9611.html

Carrie Bradshaw is not real, and neither is her job. You will never be her or have that job, and sadly, neither will I. Oh yeah, and the opportunity to raid the wardrobe closet at VOGUE -- that's not real either (at least, not as an intern). Not long after these startling realizations sank in, a pre-graduation panic set up camp in my head.

How do I find a job? Should I go to graduate school? Should I do another internship? When will I finally be paid? How much will I be paid? Where will I work? What city should I live in? The list goes on.

The kicker is that every worry I have, someone else has too. Every cover letter I send out is only one in a stack. And to boot, my parents are just two of the bazillions of baby-boomers who are salivating over what the tuition cheques will buy them next year.
