SHE'S SO??¦40?

Jane editor in chief Brandon Holley celebrated her 40th birthday Friday with an affair rowdy enough for women half her age. She threw a party at her Red Hook, N.Y., home with 200 of her closest friends that got so raucous, the cops showed up. "We had a fight [between] two guys over a girl and it continued out onto the street," said Holley. The cops stayed parked in front of her place until the party broke up at about 4 a.m. How does Holley feel about the event, now that the festivities are over? "I thought I wouldn't care, but then I woke up and I thought, ???Oh crap, now what?'" Perhaps recounting the details of turning the big 4-0 in your editor's letter? Maybe, said Holley. "It's good for jokes." But her first task will be to travel to Liberia to snag an interview with its first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Said Holley: "The last thing I wrote about for Jane was Kirsten Dunst's genie pants and now I'm interviewing the president of Liberia."

But Holley still knows how to have a good time, as she did at Jane's holiday party Tuesday night in Brooklyn. Holley, vice president and publisher Carlos Lamadrid and the rest of the Jane staffers took turns riding a mechanical bull. Holley and Lamadrid, both equestrians, made a $100 bet on who could last the longest. Holley rode for 25 seconds. Lamadrid fell after 23 seconds and suffered a black eye, a cut above his eye and a broken ring finger. "Last year we did karaoke," said Lamadrid. "That was much safer.???

REVAMPING THE WEB

For those whose appetite isn't sated by a weekly diet of five-figure word counts in print, The New Yorker's promised Web site relaunch is in the works. "The plan is to come out no later than February with a site that looks pretty different," said editor in chief David Remnick. Web editor Blake Eskin, who rejoined the magazine earlier this year, is working with deputy editor Pamela McCarthy to develop the site. Staffers at all levels apparently have been invited to brainstorm. "Everything's up for grabs until right before it comes out," Remnick said firmly. But one of the options said to be under consideration and in the prototype phase is a blog by multiple New Yorker writers, vetted by the magazine's storied full-time fact-checking staff. Remnick would say only that, on the Web site, "our desire and urge toward accuracy will not change??¦.You would be right to think that we'd want the site to reflect the values of the magazine." Like WWD, The New Yorker is owned by Cond?© Nast Publications.

Her succeeding CG founding editor-in-chief (August 1999) Atoosa Rubenstein in July 2003 naturally raises speculation that she will do the same at Seventeen, now that Rubenstein has left to start her own business (min, November 13, 2006). But Schulz--whom we caught up with in New York last Tuesday (November 28) when she judged the The Book Standard's 2006 Teen Book Video awards--said "I am happy at CG. We've accomplished much [rate base has risen from 1.25 million to 1.35 million], but there is plenty to look forward to. My career is here. I will always be grateful to Atoosa for hiring me as CG deputy editor [2000], promoting me to executive editor [2003], and recommending me as her CG successor to [Hearst Magazines president] Cathie Black." Appropriately, Schulz's own #2--executive editor Ann Shoket--is among the reported Seventeen favorites.

Primedia Inc., publisher of Motor Trend and Automobile magazines, agreed to sell 17 hunting, fishing and shooting publications for $170 million to InterMedia Partners LP to pare debt and focus on younger male readers. he sale assets include television productions, Web sites and publications associated with Fly Fisherman, Guns & Ammo and other magazines focused on the outdoors, New York-based Primedia said today in a statement.

Primedia, which sold its craft and sewing magazines in September for $132 million, will shift its strategy to male readers ages 18 to 34, spokesman Josh Hochberg said in an interview. Primedia publishes Hot Rod, Snowboarder, Stereophile and Surfer magazines. It will use some of the proceeds to cut debt. Primedia had long-term debt of $1.46 billion as of 2005.

The company is targeting specific ``enthusiast audiences,'' Hochberg said. Motor Trend and Automobile, two of Primedia's best-selling magazines, aren't included in the sale. Shares of New York-based Primedia rose 4 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $1.56 at 1:44 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They had dropped 5.6 percent this year before today.
