Post Co. Sells Technology Magazines And FOSE Show to California Firm
By Frank Ahrens
December 9, 2006
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/08/AR2006120801494.html

The Washington Post Co. has agreed to sell Post Newsweek Tech Media, its portfolio of technology magazines, to 1105 Media of Chatsworth, Calif., for an undisclosed amount, acknowledging that the business-to-business venture no longer fits the company's strategy.

The magazines include Government Computer News, Washington Technology, Government Leader and Defense Systems. Also included is FOSE, the annual information technology convention put on by Post Newsweek Tech Media.

"Unfortunately, we could never seem to make the business work," said John B. Morse, The Post Co.'s chief financial officer. All of The Post Co.'s other media assets are consumer-oriented.

ART MAG DIVA MAY HAVE EYE ON ARMORY SHOW
By Keith J. Kelly
December 11, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/seven/12112006/business/art_mag_diva_may_have_eye_on_armory_show_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

The Canadian-born multimillionaire Louise T. Blouin MacBain is said to be on the brink of buying the Armory Show, even as her art magazine empire bleeds red ink.

A spokesman for the show conceded to The Post that there have been some "preliminary talks" with prospective suitors, without disclosing their identities.

According to the new issue of New York, MacBain actually has signed a letter of intent to buy it for $10 million. However, in a profile on MacBain that hits the newsstands today, Vanessa Grigoriadis writes that the deal may have hit a last-minute snag. Reached in London yesterday, MacBain said of any Armory talks, "I can't comment on that."

WELSH GO-ES WEST TO LAUNCH MAGS
By Keith J. Kelly
December 11, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/seven/12112006/business/welsh_go_es_west_to_launch_mags_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

After only three months, magazine entrepreneur Don Welsh is splitting from Mariah Media - where he was attempting to serve as the launch publisher of Outside's Go - to head west to start anew with his own publishing company.

The new company, called Mountain Time, plans to publish lifestyle magazines in affluent ski resorts towns such as Telluride and Aspen, Welsh said.

Jake Hill, ex-publisher of Spin, will now be the launch publisher of Go, a travel magazine aimed at the super affluent males in the 40-plus age bracket. Hill had been consulting on the project under Welsh.

Rodale Moves to Integrate Online, Print Staffs
By Lucia Moses
December 11, 2006
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003494871

Rodale today is announcing a sweeping series of changes to integrate its print and online functions.

Its approach differs from that of other publishers who have taken incremental steps to integrate online and print sales, or merged editorial and sales functions on a title-by-title basis, to reflect the readers and advertiser’ platform-neutral approach to media. Rodale, meanwhile, is attempting to change the way it sells and manages content for all its brands at once.

Starting Dec. 11, the parent of Prevention and Men’s Health will dedicate online salespeople to individual publishers, while training print salespeople to sell online. Rodale hopes that dedicating online sales people to individual brands will position the company to grow online ad sales by 50 percent in 2007.

Memo Pad
By Irin Carmon, Stephanie D. Smith, Julee Greenberg, and Amy Wicks

HANGING HIS SHINGLE: Norman Pearlstine sure is preaching the religion of private ownership. At a panel he moderated Thursday night on the future of news, the former Time Inc. editor in chief repeatedly asked his guests leading questions about public ownership's effect on the integrity of news. Of course, Pearlstine — as he stated in his introduction — is now a senior adviser to private equity firm The Carlyle Group. Equally ironic was that the discussion was held in the environs of Pearlstine's former employer, and the lineup included Time Inc. chief executive officer Ann Moore as well as former Los Angeles Times editor John Carroll and New York Times managing editor Jill Abramson.

THE SAME, BUT DIFFERENT: What will be new in the next print reincarnation of Radar when the title finally relaunches (it's the third try) in print next February? Well, not much. Former Domino art director Barbara Reyes has given the magazine a new look, and perhaps most importantly, there's the money — at least for now. "The only difference now is that we have an investor" — or investors —"who believes in it," said founder Maer Roshan. Radar's backers include Yusef Jackson, son of Rev. Jesse Jackson, and unofficially, supermarket mogul Ron Burkle. Roshan said his investors have committed to the title for five years, but didn't reveal under what conditions. Besides, past investors also made promises, but Harvey Weinstein and a few of his personal connections stopped at two issues, and Mort Zuckerman and Jeffery Epstein ponied up only $10 million of their Roshan-claimed $20 million commitment.

FRESH BLOOD: The editorial offices of In Style are getting awfully crowded. First, managing editor Charla Lawhon got a helping hand from Martha Nelson when Time Inc. gave the title to Nelson in addition to her duties as editor of The People Group. Now from today, former Cargo editor in chief Ariel Foxman will start working his mojo on the magazine, having been named Time Inc. editor at large on Friday and given In Style as his first assignment. As editor at large, Foxman will report to John Huey, Time Inc.'s editor in chief, but he will report to Lawhon in his duties at In Style.

RHINO MESSAGE: Marc Ecko Enterprises has secured a one-year global endorsement agreement with teen music and film sensation JoJo for its Rhino Red junior footwear line. As part of the deal, the actress, singer and producer will appear in the line's spring TV and print campaigns, titled "JoJo the Creator." For print, the ad will appear in Seventeen, Teen Vogue, CosmoGirl and In Touch Weekly, among others, while broadcast media includes MTV, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and various tween Web sites. JoJo, or Joanna Noelle Levesque, the 16-year-old star's real name, rose to fame in 2004 with her platinum-selling self-titled debut album. In 2006, she expanded her reach to film, starring in both "Aquamarine" and "RV," where she appeared with Robin Williams.

BACK TO THE FARM: A high-gloss magazine that discusses wine worth hundreds of dollars a bottle and rare ingredients might seem an unlikely champion of down-and-dirty farmers, but Food & Wine doesn't think so. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Food & Wine Magazine Classic, June 15 to 17 in Aspen, the magazine has set a target of raising $1 million for Farm to Table, a national initiative that supports independent farmers across the U.S. "Enjoying wine and food grown, raised or harvested locally boosts our economy, protects our farmland, provides greater quality foods and enhances our overall environment," said the magazine's editor in chief Dana Cowin. Chris Grdovic, associate publisher, said the fund-raiser will continue until the end of next year to meet its monetary target.

SI, Takkle.com Ink Social Networking Deal

In a bid to connect with young, tech-savvy readers, Sports Illustrated struck an alliance with Takkle.com, an online social network for high school athletes.

Under the alliance announced today, sports fans can go to Takkle.com to nominate candidates for SI’s Faces in the Crowd, a longstanding department of the magazine that recognizes student athletes. Visitors also will be able to submit video highlights of student athletes on Takkle.com, and SI will showcase one athlete’s video each week on Takkle.com.

SI plans to expand the editorial partnership by cross-selling Takkle.com with the magazine.

Primedia to Shed Outdoors Titles
By Lucia Moses
December 11, 2006
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003494872

Primedia agreed to sell its 17 hunting, fishing, and shooting titles to private equity-controlled InterMedia Outdoor, Inc., for $170 million in cash, to reduce its debt and focus on males 18-34. Primedia had long-term debt of $1.46 billion in 2005.

The deal, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2007, would include events, Web sites, TV and radio programming, and branded products related to the 17 titles. The magazines, including Bowhunter, Fly Fisherman and Guns & Ammo, make up Primedia's Outdoors Group.

The sale would leave Primedia with about 73 enthusiast publications, the company having sold its nine consumer crafts titles and four enthusiast jewelry titles and their related assets earlier this year. Primedia reported revenue of $984 million in 2005.

Fitness Mags Stay in Shape
By Lucia Moses
December 11, 2006
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003494865

In an age when bikram is a household word and the city that put cheesecake on the map is outlawing trans fats, it’s a good time to be in the health and fitness category. Fitness books are right in the sweet spot.

Meredith Corp.’s recent acquisition Fitness seems to be improving circulation and ad health since moving over from G+J USA Publishing in May 2005. Total circulation grew 1.8 percent to 1.5 million in first-half 2006 following a 4.4 percent decline in first-half 2005, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Ad pages narrowed their decline to just 3.7 percent in ’06 from an 18.9 percent drop in ’05, per the Mediaweek Monitor.

Once perceived as being for the woman who works out all the time, the magazine under editor in chief Denise Brodey has developed a more attainable message. “Fitness is not a gym magazine. It’s a magazine for every level,” Brodey contended.

SI Kids' Ad Programs Grow Up
By Lucia Moses
December 11, 2006
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003494864

When Franklin Sports went to Sports Illustrated Kids to promote Battle Max, its new paintball-style game for teens and tweens, the conversation quickly moved beyond print and online ads. SI Kids created an online forum of Battle Max that let kids play a virtual version of the game. Through the magazine, Franklin got a booth at the Dew Action Sports Tour where it was able to demo the game.

“It was extremely effective,” Chuck Quinn, vp of marketing and sourcing for Franklin Sports, said of the program. “I give [SI Kids] credit for looking at it in a comprehensive way.”

Winning Franklin’s and other ad schedules this year depended on the monthly’s ability to deliver programs that went beyond the page, argued Dave Watt, publisher of Sports Illustrated Kids. “We would not have carried that business were we not able to come up with programs like that,” he said.

First For Women Is Quite the Ironic Magazine for Bauer To Be Publishing
By Jossip Staff
Dec. 8, 2006
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/bauer-publishing/first-for-women-is-quite-the-ironic-magazine-for-bauer-to-be-publishing-20061208.php

Is Bauer Publishing one of publishing's least friendly employers for those with XX chromosomes? That's what multiple current and former staffers, from the business and publishing side of the business, have been telling us. Forget VNU's dildo-slash-sexual harassment doozy of a lawsuit. If you're a woman who feels uncomfortable in the workplace, there's a good chance Bauer is your boss.

And most of the blame, we're told, falls on chief Hubert Boehle. One former Bauer employee calls the CEO an "egomaniacal misogynist," and that seems to be the kindest of compliments we've heard.

Bauer, of course, was in the news most recently for axing Debra Birnbaum as Life & Style's editor-in-chief, even after she managed a staggering 49 percent increase in circulation only to see the floor fall out on her. Her replacement was Mark Pasetsky, the mag's general manager who – we've been telling you – doesn't have the confidence of many staffers.
