******* WHY wait until the 12th day of Christmas to start your bloodbath? For weeks now, the editorial staff at Time Inc. has been worried and demoralized because the bean counters from the McKinsey & Co. consulting firm have been poking around. And you know what the conclusion always is: Fire more of those log-rolling editorial types - toss 'em into the fire. But why wait to spread the cheer? This week, Time Inc. Chairman and CEO Ann Moore once again tossed aside one of the few sacred rules left in corporate America: Do not fire people the week before Christmas. She lowered the boom on 27 more people in the company's consumer-marketing department yesterday. The hit list includes three directors: Josh Orenstein at Money, John Reese at Time and Hank Fifield at This Old House. This brings the count of people who have been axed, downsized, booted and canned at Time Inc. since this time last year to 577. MORE ONLINE

PROMOTIONAL TOOL: If Brad Pitt was shocked to see his bare-chested, soaked image on the December cover of Vanity Fair, he may be even more baffled to find out he's promoting a party for photographer Robert Wilson in New York on Jan. 16. Editors on Tuesday received a "save the date" e-mail from public relations firm Laforce and Stevens with the subject "Brad Pitt + Save the Date" for the premier of Wilson's art installation. The project will feature images of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Alan Cumming, Winona Ryder and Princess Caroline, among others. In November, Pitt was widely reported as intensely peeved that Wilson's photos, shot in September 2005, were used in the recent Vanity Fair. Wilson allegedly notified Pitt via snail mail that the image would be featured in the magazine. Ironically, that same photo of Pitt in boxers and white socks is included at the bottom of the e-mail invite. According to the e-mail, a formal invitation will come after the holidays. Editors will be eager to see what Brad will be wearing on that one. PUTTING ON THE POUNDS: As the body mass index of runway walkers continues to make headlines, skinny models just might present a whole new problem for editors. Everyone has a story of a celebrity cover slimmed by Photoshop, but several editors have been quietly ordering the retouching of gaunt model shots to make them look, well, a little fatter. "A model shows up and you realize she's too thin and has lost weight since the booking, but the show must go on," said Allure editor in chief Linda Wells. "When the film comes to me, I realize I don't want to see hip bones and ribs in the magazine." ANOTHER SIMPLE MOVE: Yet another one is exiting the halls of Real Simple. Creative director Vanessa Holden, the number two to managing editor Kristin van Ogtrop, is leaving the title. Holden's departure comes on the heels of a half-dozen staffers' departures in the last month, including food director Frances Boswell and home director Michael Cannell. The title is on a hiring spree to fill the gaps. MORE ONLINE

Time made a very unsatisfying choice for its Person of the Year designation. Newsweek, meanwhile, offered an astute idea to mark the weekly's annual "Who's Next" issue. Instead of singling out someone to epitomize a news-filled year, Time opted for the ultimate cop-out. It picked "You" as the "Person of the Year" (POY). For its part, Newsweek, anticipating a delicious and bloody prelude to the 2008 presidential wars, picked Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the Democratic front-runners. I like the newsy decision, though some Time editors have smirked and pointed out that Time has already put Clinton and Obama on its cover. Cynics can squawk that Time should've named someone -- anyone -- and that Newsweek is slighting the field of Republican candidates. (I'd look for G.O.P. presidential prospect Mitt Romney of Massachusetts to grace Newsweek's cover soon, as a make-up gesture.) MORE ONLINE

As The New York Times slowly works its way toward a narrower broadsheet in 2008, the paper has another new format in development: a tabloid for the younger generation. On Dec. 15, executive editor Bill Keller mentioned a tabloid ???prototype??? during one of his occasional ???Throw Stuff at Bill??? sessions for the staff, a combination state-of-the-paper address and Q&A free-for-all. ???It??™s way too early to talk about it,??? Mr. Keller wrote in an e-mail Dec. 18, when asked about the tabloid. ???It??™s one of many projects that are still in the noodling stage.??? The subject arose during the middle of one of Mr. Keller??™s three sessions on Dec. 15, in the paper??™s ninth-floor auditorium, with publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. and managing editors Jill Abramson and John Geddes in attendance. A staffer asked about local coverage, and Mr. Keller mentioned new or planned electronic products, plus a ???possible print product??? that would be ???aimed at younger readers.??? MORE ONLINE 6. E!Ricci??™s Fur Reversal By Marc Malkin 12/18/06 http://www.eonline.com/gossip/planetgossip/blog/index.jsp?uuid=b9c83436-cb10-4330-bd1c-f73fda81d055 Christina Ricci will no longer be wearing fur. Just last week, I reported that Ricci's biggest fan website got shut down by its owner because the star had worn reindeer fur on a recent cover of W magazine, a move that landed her on PETA's Worst Dressed list. Now I'm told Ricci has decided to go fur free. "After being named on the PETA worst dressed list for wearing fur on the cover of W magazine, I have been deluged with angry and disappointed fans," Ricci wrote in an email on Saturday to PETA's Dan Mathews. "I never meant to hurt nor anger anyone with my insensitivity. For what it is worth, I have received the message loud and clear and will not be wearing fur in the future. I apologize for my offensive actions." A rep for PETA tells me that Ricci's name has been removed from the Worst Dressed list. The animal rights group is also sending her a Christmas basket of "cruelty-free goodies to thank her for her compassionate decision," the rep says.
