No Real Shock
By Irin Carmon

http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/111572?page=1

Hachette Filipacchi revealed late Thursday it was closing Shock magazine, its visually dominated, lowest-common-denominator monthly. A spokeswoman for the company said eight employees, including editor in chief Mike Hammer, who helped launch Maxim, would be losing their jobs.

In the mold of ElleGirl, also shuttered this year, the magazine will continue online at ShockU.com.

Launched in late May, the magazine was made up mostly of photographs and captions meant to live up to the name. The cover of the December issue showed a person falling through the air, captioned "Suicide Leap," and bloodied bodies were a standby. The magazine was based on Hachette's French title, Choc, which has a circulation of 350,000. Hachette U.S. president and chief executive officer Jack Kliger said in a statement that "After six months in the marketplace, Shock's performance at newsstands has not produced trends that indicate that we will get the returns that we are looking for." The final issue will be February, appearing next week.

Brought to you by that logo on the Hallmark Card

HALLMARK MAGAZINE is only in its third issue, but it has already attracted blue-chip advertisers like Kodak and Lindt chocolate. At a time when many magazines are struggling, Hallmark Magazine, published by the greeting card company, is enjoying success largely because it is making its retail assets available for advertising on a regular basis.

Advertisers who buy space in the magazine can put their logos on Hallmark flowers, gifts and cards, including online greeting cards. They can have in-store events at Hallmark’s 4,000 Gold Crown stores and at Hallmark card displays in the aisles of mass retailers like Walgreen’s and Wal-Mart Stores.

“We’ve got these huge retail assets,” said Carol Campbell Boggs, the magazine’s publisher. “And our business model is to leverage those assets.”

Ever dreamed of being a writer for the most famous music magazine in the world? Meet Krishtine, Russell, Peter, Tika, Colin and Krystal, six aspiring writers all competing to become the new Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone!

MTV and Rolling Stone magazine kick off the new year with “I’m From Rolling Stone,” a new reality drama premiering on Sunday January 7th at 10pm ET/PT.

Last summer, the six writers chosen from a pool of thousands of applicants were thrown directly into the mix with a wide array of writing assignments including artist and entertainment profiles and coverage of national affairs, politics and pop culture. Some of the musical acts featured in the series include Band of Horses, Ghostface Killah, We Are Scientists, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco, and more. The writers also covered some of the biggest music events of the year including the Roskilde Music Festival and Lollapalooza. MTV cameras documented the young journalists' entire experience working, for the first time, in a high-pressured journalistic environment. They compete with one another for story assignments, stress about hitting deadlines and face no-holds-barred critiques from Rolling Stone editors, all while dealing with their own personal challenges.
