Shoket In At Seventeen
By Irin Carmon

http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/111742

When Hearst Magazines named Cosmogirl executive editor Ann Shoket as the editor in chief of Seventeen magazine Wednesday, it ended a period of speculation of whether the company would opt for a self-made marquee figure like predecessor Atoosa Rubenstein, an out-of-the-box surprise, or a more tried-and-true magazine candidate. Shoket, who joined Hearst for the launch of Cosmogirl in 1999 and has been with the magazine in various capacities ever since, has long been named as a favorite to succeed Rubenstein, whose planned departure was disclosed in early November.

Sources familiar with the hiring process said Hearst higher-ups were clear on one thing: They wanted an editor utterly devoted to the magazine, one less interested in publicity-grabbing side projects. In Shoket, they are getting an apparent Hearst loyalist with a proven track record in magazines and an uncontroversial reputation. Her strong Web background ??” a decade ago, she started her own Web site for downtown living, and ran cosmogirl.com in its early days ??” is also an obvious plus as a fresh round of Web ventures vie for teenage eyes. ???She's the type of person that puts her all into the job,??? said Cosmogirl editor in chief Susan Schulz, adding that Shoket wasn't particularly obsessed with the top spot. ???She was never nipping at my heels or anything like that. She wanted to execute the vision I had for Cosmogirl and always had enthusiasm.??? Shoket has previously worked at Parade's teen news magazine, React, and The American Lawyer.

???She can be a tough editor, but always earns people's respect,??? said Michelle Lee, who worked with Shoket on the Cosmogirl launch and is now at In Touch Weekly. ???She's a words person and a very hard worker.??? Rubenstein ??” who's off forming her own company, Big Momma Productions Inc. ??” chimed in, claiming, ???I was really happy to hear from Cathie [Black, Hearst Magazines president] this morning that Ann was being named as my successor. She added, ???It's always great to see a colleague get a big job.??? Through the first half of 2006, Seventeen saw paid and verified circulation fall slightly by 1.2 percent, to 2 million, and newsstand sales rose by 1 percent to 327,631. Cosmogirl, meanwhile, saw paid and verified circulation remain flat at 1.4 million, though newsstands sales fell 14.7 percent in the period, to 352,911.

Cosmogirl Is Pick For Seventeen Ed
By Keith J. Kelly

Seventeen has finally found a new editor-in-chief to replace Atoosa Rubenstein, whose sudden departure in November surprised many in the mag world. The mag's new editrix is Ann Shoket - now executive editor at CosmoGirl, another teen title owned by Hearst. Shoket faces a tough task, keeping a magazine that was once the undisputed queen of the teen mags relevant and growing in a market that has constricted recently.

Although Seventeen's single copy sales were over 400,000 and up 2.5 percent in 2006, according to Hearst estimates, its ad sales were down about 3 percent to 939 ad pages. Meanwhile, Cond?© Nast's Teen Vogue is claiming it will surpass Seventeen by about 200 ad pages this year. Final numbers have yet to be released by the Publishers Information Bureau, but through November the pint-sized rival had a 216-page lead over Seventeen.

Two other teen magazines folded in the past year: Time Inc.'s Teen People and Hachette Filipacchi's Elle Girl. Over the past few years, YM and Teen magazine also disappeared. On the Web, Cond?© Nast also is putting big bucks behind a teen Web site called Flip.com Shoket, the 34-year-old editor, was moving into her new office on the 17th floor of the Hearst Tower, and wasn't available to discuss her new job.

MTV: 6 writers rock Rolling Stone's world
By Marisa Guthrie

A contributing-editor slot at Rolling Stone is the dream job for many journalists, who may toil for years in low-paying jobs to get there. But six fledgling writers - some with no journalism experience - got that opportunity when Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner joined with MTV to create a realty show set at the music bible.

"This may not have been the way things would have naturally played out for them had they just been working as interns," concedes Drew Tappon, the executive producer of MTV's "I'm From Rolling Stone." The 10-episode series, which premieres Sunday at 10 p.m., has six people spending the summer interning and competing for the job. But unlike the off-camera interns at Rolling Stone, who don't even get to fill out lunch orders, the participants on "I'm From Rolling Stone" were interviewing music celebrities and flying off to Lollapalooza and the Roskilde music festival in Denmark. The contestants each had a studio apartment in Gramercy Park and, unlike the real Rolling Stone interns, they were paid.

"The interns didn't like us because we were, like, special," said Tika Milan, a 26-year-old freelance writer and University of Buffalo grad. "I tried to get [an intern] to transcribe something for me, and he looked at me like he was going to puke. I asked nicely, 'Could you help me with this please?' He was like, b-, are you crazy? And then he told on me."

Giant Magazine Sold to Radio One
By Lucia Moses
1/3/07
http://www.nypost.com/seven/12212006/business/fashion_week_fermished_over_fall_sked_problems_business_suzanne_kapner.htm

Radio One today confirmed reports that it bought the assets of independent men??™s entertainment magazine Giant from its founder, Jamie Hooper. With the acquisition, priced at about $275,000, Radio One plans to grow its urban media platform. Smokey Fontaine, the current editor in chief, was named Giant CEO. He will have an ownership stake in the magazine and retain day-to-day editorial oversight.

Giant has struggled to find its footing amid more established men??™s magazines since its founding in 2004. Newsstand sales have been weak, and the magazine, which had a rate base of 300,000 in 2006, went without an editor for about a year until Fontaine was named to the post in March 2006. The magazine, which delivers news and entertainment for young men, has undergone two redesigns, under Fontaine and his predecessor, Mark Remy.

Radio One, which owns or operates 70 radio stations in 22 urban markets, said in a press release that it planned to preserve Giant??™s editorial content while boosting its sales, promotion and distribution and expanding its online presence. The company said certain back-office functions will be consolidated into Radio One??™s corporate offices.
