1. TIME
A Changing TIME
By Richard Stengel
Jan. 4, 2007

I'm not telling you anything you don't know when I say the media world is changing. But as technology evolves and new ways of delivering information emerge, some things don't change. TIME'S core commitment to explaining the world through great writing, reporting and pictures remains steadfast. In fact, I would argue that in this new dizzying forest of information, it's become even more important to have a trusted guide.

The most immediate change is right in front of you. The issue you are holding in your hands--or perhaps you're reading this online--is the first issue of TIME with our new on-sale day, Friday. In fact, it's the first copy of TIME magazine to go on sale on Friday in more than 50 years.

We've moved our publication schedule because the news environment has shifted and because we've been listening to you. Over and over, we've heard from subscribers that they get the magazine early in the week and then put it aside to read on the weekend. The solution was pretty simple: let's get you the magazine on the weekend when you want it.

Headlines about Cond? Nast start-up Portfolio poaching business journalists are by now commonplace, but Fortune is striking back by grabbing some talent of its own. Jennifer Reingold, previously at Fast Company, has been hired by the Time Inc. title as a senior writer based in New York. This is the first hire made by new Fortune managing editor Andy Serwer.

CUTBACKS, 2007, now playing at a Time Inc. magazine near you.

The latest casualty figure is 150 people - with the ax being honed and a decision possibly due from bosses like CEO Ann Moore in the next two weeks.

"These things tend to change almost day to day, I don't think anything has been finalized yet," said one source.

Jobs

...that Janemag.com, the web site for Jane magazine, is looking for a fulltime freelance web assistant. Duties include uploading editors' blog posts, monitoring forums, building articles and slideshows, creating polls, maintaining email submissions, quality control. HTML experience is preferred but not required. The job requires light HTML that can be learned. This position requires excellent organizational abilities and diligent attention to detail. Internships

...that SHAPE is looking for a fashion intern for Spring 2007. This position is an excellent way to build your resume and network with a staff that wants to help you grow. Hours and days of the week are flexible, and we'll work around class schedules. Please send your resume and availability to Marissa at MStephenson@shape.com. (Ok to mention Ed)

... that CO-ED Magazine, a national college lifestyle magazine, is looking for interns. This is not a coffee fetching position; all of our interns will work extensively with the magazine, associated websites and CollegeCandy.com (a women's daily newsletter). There are frequent writing and research opportunities. An interest in magazine journalism is preferred, and a love for all things college is a MUST. CO-ED is located in Hoboken, New Jersey, just five minutes from the PATH (don't be scared). To apply, please email Blair@coedmagazine.com. (OK to mention Ed)

… that the Utne Reader has 3 positions available for its spring editorial internship program (in Minneapolis, MN). Internships are six months long, and include a $75/month transportation stipend. Interns can expect to learn entry-level job skills (those must-have resume builders, such as permissions, manuscripts, fact-checking, etc.), but should come prepared to be full-fledged, passionate members of our editorial team. Interns pair off with editors to plan department content, write for the magazine and online edition, and immerse themselves in our library of some 1,500 indy publications, as they help us assemble “the best of the independent press.” (For those aspiring to a magazine career, these internships offer a singular opportunity to gain familiarity with the indy media landscape – all the publications you never heard of before, but now would trade your eye teeth to work at.) For more information, see www.utne.com/magazine/internships.html, or email Julie Hanus, Assistant Editor, jhanus@utne.com. (OK to mention Ed)

...that Utne Reader is also looking for an online editorial intern to help create much of the original content for the Utne Reader website (www.utne.com). This is a writing-intensive internship. Interns are expected to research and write 5-6 short pieces each week. They also surf the web for the best content out there and take part in editorial meetings. In addition, interns have opportunities to participate in creating the print magazine. Internships are 20 hours per week and last for six months. Internships are unpaid, but offer a modest monthly transportation stipend. Applicants must have strong writing and researching skills, must be able to write on deadline, and must be experienced with the Internet and the alternative press. To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and three work samples to hlobel@utne.com. NOTE: This internship is on site.
