******* What??™s in a participle? When the new Time magazine appeared on Friday, Jan. 5??”returning, after decades of Mondays, to an end-of-week publishing cycle??”it included a note from managing editor Richard Stengel titled ???A Changing TIME.??? That was changing, not changed. ???In the coming weeks and months,??? Mr. Stengel wrote, ???you??™ll be seeing more changes and innovations.??? In other words: Pardon our dust! Soon after becoming managing editor last year, Mr. Stengel announced his intention to revolutionize the way the ancient Henry Luce property did business. Breaking news would go to the Time.com Web site, while a reconceived print edition would ???set the news agenda,??? as Mr. Stengel put it in the editor??™s note. MORE ONLINE

The annual Cond?© Nast publishers' meeting in Naples, Fla., is only three weeks away, so naturally speculation is rampant over who might take home the Publisher of the Year prize. The publishers at two of Cond?©'s largest titles ??” Glamour vice president and publisher Bill Wackermann and Vogue's Tom Florio ??” are the top favorites this time around. Wackermann is a front-runner again after losing out to Teen Vogue's Gina Sanders last year. In 2006, Glamour's pages grew pages 7.5 percent, to 1,890, on top of a 6.6 percent growth in 2005, according to Publishers Information Bureau. Wackermann also brought back Glamour's "Reel Moment" film production franchise for the second year, and all three films earned spots at the Sundance Film Festival in February and got Wackermann a mention on the "The Oprah Winfrey Show." In addition, he spun off "Real Music," and one unknown female band won a music video directed by Pink. "He didn't get it last year, and we know that [chief executive officer] Chuck [Townsend] likes him. It's a big, big magazine, so to be up 7 percent means it's probably up a whopping amount of dollars," said one insider. MORE ONLINE

YEAR-END NUMBERS ARE IN FROM the Publishers' Information Bureau (PIB), and there's few surprises for the magazine industry: 2006 was a hard year for consumer magazines, for the most part, a fact underlined by the closing of big titles like Celebrity Living, Cargo, Elle Girl, Teen People, and FHM. But some categories thrived--and even in categories that suffered, individual titles stood out with big gains in ad pages and revenue. Overall, special interest titles struggled in 2006, including many magazines targeting audiences segmented by gender. Among the hardest-hit categories were homemaking magazines, which traditionally target women, and tech and sports' enthusiast magazines, which generally target men. Among the big homemaking titles, Better Homes and Gardens saw ad pages fall 8.2% and rate-card revenue sink 2.9%. Good Housekeeping was basically flat, with ad pages down 2.2% and rate-card revenue up 4.1%. Home, a slightly smaller title, saw ad pages fall 11.1% and rate-card revenue decline 7.3%, and Metropolitan Home's ad pages sank 3.1% as rate-card revenue remained flat. Meanwhile, House Beautiful's ad pages tumbled 15.6% and rate-card revenue fell 9.8%. It wasn't all bad news in the homemaking categories. One of the bright spots was the continued success of Dwell, launched in August 2000, which targets younger women with hip content: the magazine saw ad pages jump 39.6% and rate-card revenue rise 59.9%. And House & Garden's ad pages jumped 15.3%. MORE ONLINE 4. Red HerringMeredith Buys Interactive Firms By Michael Cohn 1/10/07 http://www.redherring.com/Article.aspx?a=20663&hed=Meredith+Buys+Interactive+Firms Magazine giant Meredith expanded its presence in the online marketing area by snapping up two interactive agencies Wednesday, Genex and New Media Strategies, in a further sign that traditional print publishers are latching onto the web to generate revenue as print readers go online. The Des Moines, Iowa-based company, which publishes magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, Fitness, Ladies??™ Home Journal, More, and Parents, already has in place a Meredith Integrated Marketing unit, but the acquisitions should give the company more of a foothold in the latest ways to capture buzz on the Internet. Print publishers have been struggling to adjust to the rapidly changing dynamics of the Internet as more of their traditional readers have been spending time in front of a computer screen instead of turning the pages of a magazine. MORE ONLINE 5. Biz ReportSocial Networks the Cure for Magazines? By Kristina Knight 1/09/07 http://www.bizreport.com/2007/01/social_networks_the_cure_for_magazines.html In their quest for new readers more magazines and newspapers are turning to social networking standbys. Blogs, RSS feed and more are popping up on magazine and newspaper websites, and some publishers are buying entire social networks in the hopes of boosting readership and revenue. One such buy is from Hearst Magazines, the publisher has purchased social network eCRUSH.com for an undisclosed sum. The social site allows members to send email "crushes" to non-members. The non-members must register with eCRUSH to learn who their admirers are. Along with eCRUSH Hearst gets eSPIN, an online version of the spin-the-bottle game and HighSchoolStyleBoard, a photo-rating site. The purchase is the result of the high demand for targeted teenage advertising inventory, according to one executive. Many of Hearst??™s titles, including Seventeen, CosmoGIRL and Teen will begin including social networking capabilities like interactive content, photos, video, and podcasts this year. They will also launch MyPromShopper.com, which boasts content from the magazines. MORE ONLINE 6.
