ROLLING FLAT

It seems Jann Wenner apparently isn't that popular with the MTV crowd. In its first viewing on Jan. 7, Rolling Stone's MTV reality contest "I'm From Rolling Stone" attracted only 369,000 viewers. A spokeswoman from Rolling Stone declined comment Wednesday, and MTV did not respond to calls by press time. Meanwhile, FX's tabloid drama "Dirt" saw its ratings fall 35 percent to 2.4 million viewers in the show's second week, compared with 3.7 million at its debut. Though the results were disappointing, perhaps future guest star Jennifer Aniston, who is best friends with "Dirt" star Courteney Cox, will help boost the show's interest. It hasn't yet been determined when or in what capacity Aniston will appear. Meanwhile, Web gossip writer Perez Hilton, who will play himself, will appear in episode 12

ROAD KILL

It looks like those magazine gremlins will do anything to keep the February issue of W magazine and its transgender photo shoot with Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce out of the conservative Midwest. Early Wednesday, a tractor trailor carrying a load of Ws collided with another truck, resulting in at least one pallet of magazines haphazardly falling onto Interstate 71 in Cincinnati. Those that drove by the crash saw cover subjects Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig marred by the accident. All kidding aside, no one was said to be injured, but the Cincinnati Enquirer reported the crash involved a large spill of diesel fuel. The accident blocked two lanes on the interstate from 7 a.m. to approximately 3:45 p.m. The truck that contained the issues of W ??” as well as other magazine titles ??” was en route to a plant in Cincinnati. A W spokeswoman said it is too soon to know how many magazines were thrown from the truck or how the accident will affect newsstand delivery. She added that more details will not be obtained until today.

KEEP SPINNING

Spin magazine has finally named its new editor in chief, although the magazine's top title is simply called editor now. Doug Brod, who has been serving as acting editor in chief, is taking the helm. The magazine's former editor in chief, Andy Pemberton, left in June. Spin has brought on Steve Kandell in the new position of deputy editor. Kandell was most recently the senior editor at Blender. Spin also hired Michelle Egiziano as photography director. The position has been filled by freelancers since Kathleen Kemp left the magazine in March.

Christopher Bagley has been named European editor of W, based in Paris. He succeeds Jessica Kerwin, who has left the company after more than a decade with W and Women??™s Wear Daily. Though some in the industry have raised their eyebrows at the news, a Cond?© Nast spokeswoman said that she will freelance for W and was leaving in order to ???fulfill a long time ambition to travel throughout Asia.??? Bagley, meanwhile, has been in Paris for about two weeks now, and is expected to be at the upcoming couture shows. He??™ll be succeeded by Gabe Doppelt, W??™s L.A.-based entertainment editor and subsequent arts editor. Kevin West will remain West Coast editor of W, based in L.A. Meanwhile, W has hired Gabriel Snyder, currently a Los Angeles reporter at Variety, to become the magazine's new senior writer. Snyder, who also worked at The New York Observer as a media reporter, starts Feburary 1.

De Sole Switch

Domenico De Sole may be indelibly associated with Tom Ford, but his daughter Rickie De Sole is certainly free to flex her fashion potential. The Vanity Fair fashion assistant is learning the ropes of being a fickle fashionista, having accepted a position on the public relations team at Prada USA less than six months after joining Cond?© Nast. De Sole will serve as PR coordinator for Prada women??™s and report to Melissa Skoog, vice president of PR. ???I grew up in Italy, so I??™m biased towards Italian designers,??? mused De Sole, ???and I think Miuccia puts out a great product.??? She starts January 22.

4. Media Industry Newsletter
The Monday-Versus-Friday World of ???Newsweek??? and ???Time???
By Staff
1/11/07
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

It was in the 1950s--during Dwight Eisenhower's presidency--that Newsweek and Time switched from a Friday to a Monday release, and the since-1933 rivals have seemingly been in lockstep whether deliberate (newsstand price increases, etc.) or coincidental (October 27, 1975, covers of the then-unknown Bruce Springsteen are a famous example). Not so in 2007, with Time back on Fridays (though the Monday cover date continues), because, as managing editor (since June 2006) Rick Stengel explains to readers in the January 15 "premiere," Let's get you the magazine on the weekend when you want it. (More details were in the August 21, 2006, min.)

Apparently, Newsweek (and U.S. News & World Report) readers still "want it" on Monday. Here, the January 8 Newsweek was released on New Year's Day in the midst of the Gerald Ford mourning; thus, a cover tribute to the late president. January 15 Time, out last Friday (January 5--two days after the Ford burial), focused instead on the Bush Administration contemplating the sending of more troops to Iraq. With NEWSWEEK.COM and TIME.COM augmenting, we shall see how these "differences" play.
