******* KRISHTINE DE LEON, one of six interns picked to star in an MTV reality series set at Rolling Stone, expected an office out of “Almost Famous,” the 2000 movie about the early-1970s heyday of the rock music magazine. “The type of place where people were doing copious amounts of drugs to get their stories in on time, hobnobbing with lots of celebrities, no real rules,” she said. Instead, she found a workplace that was less like Woodstock and more like Wachovia bank. “It was like any other freaking office with cubicles,” Ms. de Leon, 24, said. “Very typical.” It’s no surprise that Ms. de Leon expected more flash and glamour, given the proliferation of pop-culture depictions of the magazine industry as a frothy, celebrity-packed playground. Interest in the world of glossy publications and their semi-renowned editors has reached an apogee. There are television shows like “Dirt,” the soapy FX Networks drama set at a celebrity tabloid; “Ugly Betty,” about an unattractive fashion magazine assistant; and now the Rolling Stone reality show, “I’m From Rolling Stone.” MORE ONLINE

People magazine’s article this week on Britney Spears and her “new guy,” model Isaac Cohen, is five paragraphs long. It was reported and written by seven people. To be fair, they were long paragraphs. But with layoffs expected this week at Time Inc., which publishes People, such reporter-heavy treatment is headed the way of Kevin Federline, Ms. Spears’s soon-to-be-ex-husband. Time Inc., the publishing division of Time Warner, is planning to cut more than 150 people, about half of them in editorial jobs across the company’s best-known titles, like People, Sports Illustrated, Time and Fortune. The cuts follow about 600 last year, many of them from the company’s business side, and a decision to trim its roster by selling 18 of its roughly 150 titles. MORE ONLINE

Though Keith Kelly leads today with a rumor that American Media Inc. is considering moving all of its operations back to Boca Raton, Florida – where the National Enquirer, after a quick trip to the city, has returned with its even lesser bretheren – we're told by multiple AMI insiders that: 1) Such a move is almost entirely unlikely; and 2) If chief David Pecker did decide to relocate operations once again, the timeline would be at least 10 months. More than one of our sources called the speculation "bogus." The move might make sense as a cost-cutting measure. That, and the only reason Pecker moved Star, et. al to the city was to placate then-incoming editorial director Bonnie Fuller. The honeymoon is over, and Pecker might be looking for a divorce anyhow.
