Founder of Ed2010 Helps Herself First and Foremost
By Gawker Staff

As the hours tick by, we're wondering when Ed2010 will see fit to change its name to something less expirational. In the meantime, look at founder Chandra Czape Turner, who's been promoted to executive editor of CosmoGirl! a mere nine years after founding Ed2010. Since Chandra's the only person we know who Ed2010 has ever helped, the promotion feels especially poignant. We'd also like to take this opportunity to suggest that she consider spending some of the money she's undoubtedly earned from her promotion to update the Ed2010 website, as there's certainly nothing evocative of 2010 about it.

More Shelter; Flipping Out; Wise Girls
By Amy Wicks & Stephanie D. Smith

MORE SHELTER: It looks like another interior design magazine is coming soon, this time from Ty Pennington, best known as the host and design leader of the ABC series "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Hachette Filipacchi Media is said to be publishing the magazine, although a Hachette spokeswoman didn't provide details by press time.

FLIPPING OUT: Flip.com won't launch until Feb. 6, but already 10,000 or so young girls have registered with the Cond?©Net site and are creating virtual scrapbooks on everything from their fashion choices to stories about their families. The site is a mix of art school-meets-MySpace.com, but will focus more on the works of art that users have created to share (or not) with their peers. "The idea was to meld a site to be creative and express who they are [with] pictures, words and online video, into a social networking platform," said Jamie Pallot, Cond?©Net editorial director.

Since beta began on Dec. 27, about 1,500 "flip books" have been created, with about half of them labeled as private and half set to public viewing. But unlike MySpace, the personalized flip books are more than just photo albums of the prom or last night's bender. The artistic handiwork of the users ??” who were invited into the site during its beta stage from Teen Vogue's It Girls network and via e-mail lists from YM.com and Style.com, among others ??” easily could be used in portfolios to enter design schools or even as commercials themselves. "We're surprised by the level of ambition," said Pallot.

3. New York Observer
Off the Record

Over at 4 Times Square, Si Newhouse must be cracking the whip, because both of Cond?© Nast??™s I.M.C. invitees??”Vanity Fair??™s Graydon Carter and The New Yorker??™s David Remnick??”will not be making the trek. Time managing editor Richard Stengel is skipping out of the inaugural meeting: With nearly 300 Time Inc. staffers facing layoffs, it??™s probably not a wise move to be caught schussing on the slopes.

Slate editor Jacob Weisberg was also invited to join the I.M.C. and will be making his first trip to Davos out of ???curiosity,??? he told The Observer. In the early-morning hours of Jan. 24, amidst the alpine splendor, Mr. Weisberg said that he will be writing a piece on Tuesday night??™s State of the Union address. (9 p.m. E.S.T. is 3 a.m. in Davos.)

This Year Few Titles Will See Rate Hikes
By Mary Lee Grant
1/24/07
http://www.medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_9704.asp

Normally at the beginning of any new year, magazines are looking for ad rate increases and media buyers are mounting their usual lines of resistance. And so it is this year, but these days the advantage is clearly on the side of buyers, who are dismissing most of those requests out of hand.

"It's just the usual posturing," says one top Midwest print buyer. "They aren??™t going to get them. They talk about postal rates going up and the increase in the cost of paper, but they say that every year."

There will be some exceptions, says the buyer, those few hot must-have titles people are buzzing about. "Magazines like Rachael Ray??™s can get what they ask for. But there really isn??™t an Oprah or a Real Simple out there this year. There aren??™t many magazines that can just ask for what they want. It is a very competitive marketplace."
