******* Time Warner is expected to announce today that it has sold 18 magazines to the Bonnier Group, a Stockholm-based publishing giant better known in Europe than the U.S. The deal was expected to be more than $200 million but well below the $300 million that Time Inc. sought when it first put the magazines up for sale last fall. Time Warner's board is scheduled to meet today for its quarterly meeting, during which they are expected to approve the sale. Officials at Time Warner could not be reached for comment at presst ime. The transaction involves Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, TransWorld Snowboarding, Yachting, Salt Water Sportsman, and 11 other magazines in the Time 4 Media Group, as well as the Parenting Group, which includes magazines Parenting and Baby Talk. Bonnier is a 200-year-old company that owns magazines, newspapers and TV stations mainly in Scandinavian countries and has revenues of just under $3 billion a year. Jonas Bonnier, the head of the company's magazine division, has been keen to expand in the U.S., where it has a minority stake in World Publications, publisher of Saveur, Garden Design, Caribbean Travel & Life and various water sports titles. By Thursday morning, Swedish-based media conglomerate Bonnier Group could be on target to be the next owner of the Time 4 Media properties. While Time Inc. was said to be looking for around $250 million, sources said Bonnier's bid was in that range. Bonnier was said to be the front-runner of the half-dozen or so interested parties as of Wednesday night, and Time Inc. is scheduled to hold a board meeting today where the company could vote on the sale. "If they lose this thing, I'll be shocked," said one source. Sources close to the deal said that of the deals received, two were for the entire company: Bonnier's and one from the Quadrangle Group, which was working with ex-Wenner executive Kent Brownridge on the deal. Time Inc. wanted to sell the entire stable of magazines, which includes Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and the Parenting Group in one deal, but had said it would entertain bids for just the Parenting Group. Time Inc. also had said it preferred to sell the group to a strategic buyer over a private equity group. Sources said Bonnier outbid the Quadrangle Group with a "monster bid," though the exact number has not been revealed. "They thought that a strategic buyer would give them more money. And they did," said one observer. Bonnier's business divisions include newspapers, magazines, books and entertainment that serve mainly northern Europe, but the company entered the U.S. market in May when it bought a 50 percent stake in Florida-based World Publications LLC. A spokeswoman for Time Inc. had no comment at press time

Though Elizabeth Taylor hasn't had high-enough wattage nuptials to cause a media frenzy in several years, Interview decided to dedicate its entire February issue to the legend. The issue, shepherded by editor Ingrid Sischy and guest editor and longtime contributor Bruce Weber, was conceived more than a year ago, but came to fruition this month with the help of several contributors on the advertising and editorial fronts. The tribute marks the first time Interview has ever dedicated an issue to one subject. The timing was right, according to Sischy. For one, the actress is celebrating her 75th birthday at the end of February. Additionally, Sischy said, many young Hollywood starlets seem to channel Taylor today (although Taylor was never photographed getting out of a Rolls-Royce sans underwear). ???If you talk to young actresses, young hip-hop people, she just keeps coming up in conversations,??? said Sischy. ???On a pop level, take bling. Taylor outdoes any hip-hop lover by a yard.??? Sischy interviewed Taylor and the issue includes a montage shot by Weber in 2005, but never printed elsewhere. Madonna, Denis Ferrara, Miuccia Prada, Elton John and a few dozen others also contributed interviews, essays and artistic renderings of the actress. Advertisers including Gucci, Abercrombie & Fitch, Dom Perignon, Christie's and Ralph Lauren also created special ads dedicated to the star, ranging from photo essays playing on Taylor's love of men and animals to love notes featuring vintage photos.
