Ebony pushes for a new edge
By Mary Ellen Podmolik
January 28, 2007

Just before Christmas, before she had even agreed to take a job at Ebony magazine, syndicated columnist and author Harriette Cole supervised an auspicious cover photo shoot for a coming issue.

It proved to be a plum assignment for Cole, who this month was named Ebony's creative director. The February issue--with an attractive cover shot of Sen. Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, accompanied by the text "America's Next First Couple?"--hit newsstands just as Obama announced the formation of an exploratory committee to consider a presidential bid.

"It's magical timing," Cole said. "It doesn't get any better than this."

Memo Pad

BOWING OUT: At least one executive from Time Inc. is leaving the company of her own volition: co-chief operating officer Nora McAniff will step down from her post as of March 1, a move unrelated to the impending 289 layoffs at the company. McAniff, who has been with the company for 25 years save for a short sabbatical in 1992, stressed the move was for personal reasons. "I had been thinking about this for six months," she said. "I just want to do something different. I'm young, I'm 48 and I have a lot left in me. I want to try something new, and I don't know what that newness is." However, she said her next move most likely won't be in magazines.

FORTUNE'S SMILE: Publishers often bend over backwards to give their advertisers so-called added value, but the bargain apparently struck by Fortune and American Century Investments shows a little more "synergy" than usual. Starting last September, five of the six times ACI bought ads in the magazine they were adjacent to older articles from fellow Time Inc. publication Business 2.0. Some of those stories originally appeared as much as five months back. The advertisements were for a partnership with Lance Armstrong's Livestrong charity, and each article focused on socially conscious dimensions of business, labeled as a "Giving Back" column that has not since reappeared in the magazine. (The sixth article, about charitable investing, was written by Ellen McGirt, a Fortune writer now following Robert Safian to Fast Company).

VISIONS OF AMBER: Stella McCartney has wooed Amber Valletta away from Tinseltown — where she's making her mark as an actress — back to the fashion glossies. Valletta will be featured in McCartney's spring ad campaign, shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinnodh Matadin at London's Number Eleven Cadogan Gardens hotel in November. "As far as I'm concerned, it's time for a bit of Amber," declared McCartney, who assisted on the shoot while she was eight months pregnant. Valletta replaces Kate Moss, who has appeared in past McCartney campaigns. The ads, art directed by M/M Paris, will break in WWD during New York Fashion Week, and in the March issues of American Vogue, Pop, Another Magazine, Vogue Italy, and W.

NEW YORK'S GAY PROBLEM
By Jeff Bercovici
January 29, 2007
http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2007/01/new-yorks-gay-problem.php

New York City is the birthplace of the gay rights movement. It also happens to be the capital of the media business, which, as industries go, is about as homo-friendly as Broadway.

So why is it that New York magazine—a purportedly progressive publication with an openly gay editor, a deep-pocketed liberal owner, and an abiding interest in all things queer—refuses to extend health benefits to the domestic partners of its employees?

In the past, Adam Moss, New York's openly gay editor in chief, has been a vocal advocate of gay issues in the newsroom. But on this particular issue, he's been surprisingly silent. Instead, he referred our calls to New York spokeswoman Serena Torrey, who dashed off a robotic statement blaming the magazine's regressive health insurance policies on the government.

Bill Keller, the executive editor of the New York Times, smiled slightly when I asked him if he was feeling vindicated at all these days. The "fusillade" of criticism directed at the Times , from both the right and the left, has slowed down, to Keller's relief. "I can focus more on journalism, not rebuttals," he points out.

Over the years, Keller has received all sorts of responses from his not-so-adoring public. He keeps two humbling mementos in his office. A nun sent him a typed postcard saying in part: "Obey your holy priests + bishops or risk excommunication, anathema and eternal hellfire." And after Keller had ragged on his native California in a piece, the Central Coast Tribune published this dandy reply: Stuff It, Mr. Keller.

In fact, Keller might have been tempted recently to send the same message to Time Managing Editor Rick Stengel. The New York Observer had speculated that Stengel was wooing star Times columnists Maureen Dowd and Thomas Friedman as well as a slew of journalists on Keller's news staff.

Sex questionnaire mocked by Esquire
By Dan Benson
January 28, 2007

A controversial "Heterosexual Questionnaire" given to hundreds of Port Washington High School students last spring has been picked by Esquire magazine for its annual list of Dubious Achievements in 2006.

Under the headline, "If you've never diagrammed a sentence, then how do you know you couldn't?" the Esquire listing takes aim at the survey, which included the question, "If you have never slept with someone of your same gender, then how do you know you wouldn't prefer it?"

Other questions on the survey included, "What do you think caused your heterosexuality?" and "When did you decide you were heterosexual?"

Ellen Kunes, founding editor of O, The Oprah Magazine and former editor-in-chief of Redbook, has been named editor-in-chief of Health magazine, announced Southern Progress Corporation, parent company of Health.

Kunes brings a vast amount of experience to the position. O, The Oprah Magazine became one of the most successful launches in magazine history. She originated the plan for the magazine's "personal growth" focus and developed a strategy for translating Oprah Winfrey's TV message and personal charisma into magazine form. After O, she became editor-in-chief of Redbook, where she revamped the look of the magazine, created new sections and columns, and oversaw brand extensions including new books, a magazine Web site and new products. Earlier in her career, Kunes served as executive editor at Cosmopolitan and Redbook and lifestyle director at McCall's and was an editorial consultant for Health. She also held a variety of editorial posts at such titles as Self, Mademoiselle, and Seventeen. Most recently, she owned and managed a magazine consulting firm.
