1. The New York Times
For Newsweek Subscribers, a Question: Smoking or Nonsmoking?
By MARIA ASPAN
February 5, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/05/business/media/05newsweek.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Attention, all magazine readers who want to quit smoking or avoid cigarette-related advertising: Newsweek may have a special offer for you.

Magazines don’t typically look to remove advertising from their pages. But that is what Newsweek promises with an advertisement for “tobacco ad-free” editions that was published in the international section of The New York Times last Monday. The ad, which said that “Newsweek Inc. is demonstrating its commitment to the health of its readers,” listed a toll-free telephone number for readers to call in order to request those cigarette-free magazines.

But the ad contained a few oddities, starting with the reference to “Newsweek Inc.” (The magazine is published by The Washington Post Company.) The ad depicted blank Newsweek covers, but the font on those covers was slightly different from the type that the real magazine uses. And while the phone number took callers to an answering service for a Newsweek section, that department was not subscriptions or customer service — it was the magazine’s education program.

HACHETTE MAY DRAW CURTAINS ON PREMIERE
By Keith J. Kelly
February 5, 2007
http://www.nypost.com/seven/02052007/business/hachette_may_draw_curtains_on_premiere_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

Premiere magazine, which has been bleeding red ink for several years, is being put on the block by Hachette Filipacchi Media in the latest sign of retrenchment by the American arm of the Paris-based company.

Premiere will be the fourth magazine project that the company has backed away from in the U.S. in the past year. It shut down Elle Girl last summer as a print magazine but said it would keep a Web site alive.

In December it aborted the launch of Shock, a magazine that aimed to outrage and amaze with photos often gross and offbeat.

OBIT MAGAZINE IS WAITING FOR SHELF LIFE TO BEGIN
By STEVE VIUKER

Hold the death notices for Obit magazine.

The launch of the mag that will chronicle the lives of recently departed major figures has been delayed for six months - but not because of financial woes or a lack of advertiser interest, Obit's managing editor tells The Post.

"I would say it's just the machinations of putting together a magazine," said Krishna Andavolu. "It's a complex idea that we are trying to present in an innovative and interesting package and we want to get it right."

Memo Pad

Unlike Us: Radar is joining the socialite craze and taking a shot at tabloids like Us Weekly with the feature "Socialites Are Just Like Us!" in its first issue of its third incarnation (but with new investors). Yet, while Us Weekly captures stars in random moments, such as Ben Affleck making his way through an airport security line at LAX, Radar's February relaunch issue devotes 10 pages to overexposed socialites appearing in staged photos. They were photographed wearing gowns from Bill Blass and J.Mendel while eating burgers at a seedy diner, bowling at Port Authority and taking the subway. Tinsley Mortimer and Fabiola Beracasa happily jumped at the chance for more face time. "They are in on the joke," said contributing editor Sarah Horne. "It is a concept of high fashion meets grungy, unexpected places." But Radar fails to make its point: Stars are regularly photographed by Us munching on hot dogs. Do socialites really eat hamburgers in diners?

Men of Hollywood: Vanity Fair's Hollywood issue hits New York newsstands on Wednesday with approximately 322 ad pages, up 25 percent from last year's March issue. On the subject of ads, Vanity Fair is also up 12.4 percent for the first quarter under new publisher Edward Menicheschi, according to a MIN/publisher estimate. "The strong March issue is a direct result of the energy around Vanity Fair," said Menicheschi. "It's really about our circulation, which is at its highest ever, and the fact that our groundbreaking editorial plays an enormous role in the culture." The Hollywood issue has a total of 500 pages and the cover features funnymen Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Chris Rock and Jack Black. It remains to be seen if the comedic foursome has the chops to beat last year's cover with a naked Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley and (clothed) Tom Ford

Blog Away: Most teenagers can't drop $2,000 on a dress from one of the designers presenting during fashion week, so a free blog of the shows will have to do the trick. For the first time, Seventeen has tapped five of its beauty and fashion editors to post twice-daily accounts of the behind-the-scenes drama in the fashion tents through photos, video and commentary. A spokeswoman added the editors would post weekly wrap-ups with photos from the London, Milan and Paris collections, as well. And it appears the magazine's Web-surfing teen readers clearly aren't doing their schoolwork: Seventeen's comment field had several posts from readers even before the first blog entry. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal is also blogging about news and fashion trends from the shows — perhaps taking another step in increasing its fashion coverage since forming a new fashion and design bureau last year. L. Gordon Crovitz previously told WWD that the Journal readership purchased "more women's fashion items than do all the readers of the women's magazines — combined." So far, the blog isn't an individual's vanity case, like most of the species, but instead includes stories that have already appeared in the paper. It also will offer analysis and images of the runway shows in New York, Milan and Paris.
