World Enthusiastic About Time4
By Lucia Moses

Boating Life is one of World Publications’ key marine titles, but it almost didn’t make it. Without boat tests, advertisers found little value in it. But World owner and CEO Terry Snow ignored the bean-counters’ advice to close the title, and today, the magazine leads in its category. “We had a different approach, and it didn’t work,” he admitted. “It took a few years to get back on track.”

Snow isn’t afraid to try things. A lover of water and snow sports, he started Winter Park, Fla.-based World with a single book, Waterskiing (now WaterSki), which he launched as a recent college grad in 1978. He was early in developing a Web presence for his 20 luxury travel and lifestyle publications, like Spa and Saveur, and has a reputation for bringing creative marketing ideas to advertisers.

His plate just got fuller, with World poised to take over Time Inc.’s 16 Time4 Media enthusiast titles, which include Ski, Yachting and Popular Science, as well as Parenting and Baby Talk. The announced acquisition by Sweden’s Bonnier Magazine Group, which bought 49 percent of World last May as a launch pad for a U.S. expansion, would more than double World’s annual revenue, to $350 million.

Ernst & Young Verifies All You Circ
By Lucia Moses

http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003541204

All You hasn’t had trouble attracting readers and advertisers: It carried more than 1,050 ad pages in 2006, up 17.4 percent over the year prior, per the Mediaweek Monitor. It raised its rate base to 700,000 in January from 500,000 in 2006, when it overdelivered by 25 percent, and increased newsstand sales 5 percent last year, according to publisher’s estimates, despite an increase in cover price to $1.97 from $1.49 a year ago.

Yet some marketers have been reluctant to advertise in the two-and-a-half-year-old women’s service monthly. Why? Because while All You discloses self-reported numbers, it’s not audited by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, owing to its exclusive distribution deal with Wal-Mart, which doesn’t release sales data.

To eliminate the objections of some advertisers, the Time Inc. title has partnered with an auditing firm to conduct a circulation verification. While All You wouldn’t name the firm, sources identified Ernst & Young, which has been expanding its media auditing services. “The intention was to replicate [an ABC audit] to the degree that we could,” said All You publisher Diane Oshin. “It’ll be reassuring, and it’ll answer the question, ‘Can I have complete confidence in your circulation?’”

American Media Again Blames Star for Its Financial Woes (posted 2/6)
By Marrecca Fiore

http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=1000842&prmID=1

Tabloid publisher, American Media Inc. once again blamed its financial woes on Star, saying soft newsstand sales for the tabloid was the primary reason its EBITDA declined in the fourth quarter of last year to $21.5 million, down from $23.9 million in the same period a year earlier.

In a filing made Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company, which has struggled for almost a year to meet financial restatement deadlines set by its note holders, also said it may not be able “to generate sufficient cash flow” to meet its obligations under the terms of its senior credit facility and bond indentures. AMI is currently carrying about $1 billion in long-term debt.

According to the filing, the company had $56 million in cash on its balance sheet and a fully drawn revolver of $60 million as of December. AMI says it developed an action to plan, to be implemented this quarter, that will enhance cash flow and allow the company to make all of its required interest payments. It says the plan should help the company realize $19.4 million in cost savings and $17.2 million in revenue enhancements this year.

Hearst Magazines keeps coming up with ways to partner with advertisers, and this time, the effort has spread across four of its titles, Cosmopolitan, Cosmogirl, Marie Claire and Harper's Bazaar. Revlon is the sole sponsor in four, 12-page mini magazines that are affixed to the covers of each March issue. A spokeswoman said the 5-inch-by-7-inch mini magazines contain equal parts advertising and editorial. But it's not easy to tell the difference. Many of the editorial pages look like ads themselves, as they also feature Revlon products.

Kiki Rees, senior vice president of media and communications at Revlon, said one of the draws for the cosmetics company to participate in the project was the opportunity to help with its theme. The ads are for Revlon's limited-edition collection. A Hearst spokeswoman added that the project marks the first time a U.S. publisher has attached a mini magazine to the cover of multiple titles. For its part, Revlon just experienced a first of its own — running a commercial during the Super Bowl. The company aired a 60-second ad during the third quarter that was said to have cost $3 million.

Lindsay Lohan: Bad For Movies, Bad for America's Youth
By Jossip Editors

http://www.jossip.com/gossip/gossip-industry/lindsay-lohan-bad-for-movies-bad-for-americas-youth-20070206.php

When we stumbled upon Newsweek's call to arms about the Lindsays and Parises of the world launching a whole new generation of "prosti-tots," all we could think was, "Well, at least it's not in Sunday Styles." The article's message: Overexposure by Nicole Richie and her kin are harming America's female youth, and it's time to act! up!

A recent NEWSWEEK Poll found that 77 percent of Americans believe that Britney, Paris and Lindsay have too much influence on young girls.

Perhaps that has something to do with the 77 percent of Americans who subscribe to, purchase at the newsstand, or borrow friends' copies of Us and People. No? The two are completely unrelated?
