******* Wenner Media’s Us Weekly this month wants to get its readers close to the celebrities they follow—really close. Features set to launch on its Web site this month would let visitors enter to win a date with hunk Brody Jenner (son of Olympian great Bruce Jenner), go on virtual shopping trips with stars and play other new celebrity-themed games. Us Weekly, which had only a modest Web presence until last July, is the latest celeb title to bulk up online. In the next few weeks, visitors will be able to click to hear and buy the songs of musicians mentioned in articles on the site, through a partnership with Snocap, a provider of online music services. The goal is to provide a richer experience for visitors who are saturated with online news and videos about stars, said executives at Usmagazine.com. “Our readers love celebrities,” said Ken Baker, editorial director, Usmagazine.com. “They want to be able to get as close to them as possible. What we’re looking to do is take it from being a voyeuristic experience to ‘We’re in this together.’” MORE ONLINE

With the dramatic rise and fall of laddie and shopping magazines behind them, men’s magazines are finding success in a somewhat old-fashioned concept: service. That concept, long associated with women’s titles, today accounts in part for the strength of magazines from Rodale’s Men’s Health to Dennis Publishing’s Maxim to Cond? Nast’s GQ. “In terms of what’s working in the market, it’s practical, useful, no-nonsense information that busy, successful men can use,” said Dave Zinczenko, editor in chief, Men’s Health. “They want to get information and get it quickly, and they want a payoff.” Other men’s magazines have upped their service quotient in recent months. While Maxim has prided itself on providing heavy-duty service to young men in a just-between-us-guys manner, editor in chief Jimmy Jellinek has begun to put more emphasis on service and fashion while downplaying the bawdy humor and sexy women. The move has been an effort to further distance Maxim from its early days, as well as from rival FHM, which Emap folded in December. MORE ONLINE

In media terms, the anticipation and hype-y buildup to Radar's latest incarnation (the third, if you're scoring at home) has been like that of a rock album — albeit one whose lineup is as interchangeable as the studio it was recorded in. You could even say radaronline.com and the accompanying schadenfreude is like the rabid, forgive me, Radiohead or Coldplay (or, perhaps more accurately, Arctic Monkeys) fans who leak details and tracks of the album ahead of its street date. And then you have the magazine's detractors oiling the hype machinery while purporting not to care. And while we're as weary as the next media blog about anything as consistently over-hyped — and sniped — as Maer Roshan's Radar, we're compelled to give it a track-by-track review. The Cover: Shirtless Colin Farrell, "Toxic Bachelor #1," kicks off Radar 3.0 in bed with the ubiquitous blond and emptied pack of Marlboros. Following up Radar's Ali/Esquire ripoff — featuring a shirtless Tom Cruise — we're sensing a theme hairless and, like any men's magazine, quasi-gay. MORE ONLINE

Time4Media president Tom Beusse will step down as president of the Time4Media publications sold by Time Inc. to Swedish publisher, Bonnier Media Group last month. Terry Snow, CEO of Bonnier’s World Publications, which publishes Saveur, Garden Design, Cruising World, Sailing World, Islands, Spa, Destination Weddings & Honeymoons, Resorts & Great Hotels, will oversee both the Time publications and World’s publications, said World spokesman Dean Turcol. Turcol said the World and Time magazines will be merged into a new company, the name of which will be announced shortly. Turcol also said, despite news reports to the contrary, the Time magazines will stay in New York and not move to World Publications’ Winter Park, Florida headquarters. Even though the company’s corporate offices are in Florida, it publishes magazines in different parts of the country. Saveur magazine, for example, is published in New York and will remain there with Bonnier’s newly acquired 18 publications, Turcol said. An employee of the former Time4 publications called reports of a move to Florida “nonsense.”

After a long day at work, do you ever start to wonder if what you do still counts as "writing"? Do you ever think back wistfully to your college writing classes, or get frustrated seeing another year end with your great unwritten novel still unwritten? Well, you're not the only one. That's basically the motivation behind what we're calling The Jaded Journalists Writing Workshop. Our goal is to form a small group of like-minded writers that will serve as an creative outlet for our personal writing -- both non-fiction and fiction -- that's not limited by column length, AP style, or an editor's whims. We'd plan to have workshop sessions every two weeks, with writing prompts and outside reading selections that we'll hammer out together at our first meeting later this month. (Time and place TBD.) We're hoping this is a group that can adapt with us over time as we develop as writers, so we're looking for people who are able to make something of a long-term commitment. Sound good to you? If so, e-mail us at jadedjournalists@googlegroups.com, and tell us a little bit about yourself, your writing, and why you want to join our group.
