Selling Out
By Stephanie D. Smith
February 16, 2007

After months of whispers that Dennis Publishing would sell some or all of its titles, the company confirmed via a three-sentence statement on Thursday that Maxim, Stuff and Blender are up for sale and the company has hired Allen & Co. to explore its options. The desire of Dennis founder Felix Dennis to sell the magazines — but keep newsweekly The Week — had been reported since last summer by several news outlets, including WWD, but Dennis executives repeatedly refused to comment.

Dennis was reportedly seeking $250 million for the titles last year, but analysts said the titles won't fetch anywhere near that figure, as circulation and ad pages at Maxim and Stuff have shrunk. Though a spokesman for Dennis said all three titles are profitable, Maxim's ad pages fell 6.8 percent last year, to 931, while Stuff's pages fell 14 percent to 615. Blender finished the year up 12.4 percent to 795, according to Publishers Information Bureau. Paid and verified circulation at Maxim remained flat at 2.5 million, but newsstand sales at Maxim fell 12.2 percent to 450,575. Just five years ago, Maxim sold more than 825,000 newsstand copies a month. At Stuff, paid and verified circulation for the second half of last year fell 4.8 percent to 1.2 million, while newsstand sales plummeted 34.9 percent to just 175,824 copies. In 2001, single copies for Stuff averaged at more than 500,000.

In 2004, American Media Inc. chief David Pecker reportedly was willing to pay $500 million for the men's titles, but a deal never materialized. Analysts said strategic buyers likely would pass this time around, leaving private equity firms or dark horses, like self-proclaimed "King of All Media" Howard Stern or soft-porn impresario Joe Francis, as likely players, as both reach the same hormonal male audiences with their radio and film offerings as the Dennis publications.

Clearing Out

Though it's named after a Cambridge zip code, 02138 magazine, the glossy "Vanity Fair for Harvard," as its boosters put it, is already calling New York home. The title, splashily launched in the fall and published by David Bradley's Atlantic Media, began telling staffers around November that it would join its business staff in Midtown Manhattan, and is already working out of that office. In the process, the magazine has lost all but two of its junior staff and several senior editors, though accounts differ as to the reason.

Some departed staffers blamed their egress on a dysfunctional management style under founding editors Bom S. Kim and Daniel M. Loss, both 28. Several sources said former New York magazine editor Caroline Miller, who had been consulting on the magazine, severed her contact with it in stated disapproval of how Kim and Loss treated writers and editors. Kim and Loss deny this account. Miller, who last worked at the magazine in October, said it was her "policy not to engage in postmortems."

Kim said the move to New York was to attract better editorial talent, as well as to be nearer to business centers and a concentration of Harvard alums. They'll also be closer to brand-name advisers to the magazine, like Kurt Andersen and Steven Brill. The title recently hired Carol Plum, who worked at several Cond? Nast magazines, to be 02138's latest managing editor.

MAGAZINE editors are standing by their Maria.

CNBC's Money Honey Maria Bartiromo has been under fire since her close friendship and globetrotting trip on the corporate jet with Citigroup's now fired global asset management head Todd Thomson first came to light.

But she is still keeping her day job and her easy money side jobs as a magazine columnist for Business Week and Reader's Digest - where she is estimated to be pulling in another six figures in pocket change.

Relix Owner Buys … Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs?
February 16, 2007
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/

Steve Bernstein, owner and publisher of 33-year-old Grateful Dead fanzine-turned-jam band magazine of record Relix and proprietor of Zenbu Media, has acquired a pair of metal — yes, metal — music magazines, FishbowlNY has learned. The deal is expected to be announced later today.

And how's this for an inter-office dynamic? Both magazines — 21-year-old Metal Edge ("rock's hardest magazine") and the slightly younger Metal Maniacs — will join Relix and Global Rhythm in Zenbu's New York offices. Can you say "hippies versus metal heads"? Jerry-Ozzy arguments that go on way too long?

Bernstein, meanwhile, is quietly building a multi-platform media company in the Flatiron district. In addition to the four magazines, Zenbu runs Relix's small record label and produces events including the Green Apple Music & Arts Festival and the Jammys, the genre's unfortunately-named answer to the Grammy Awards.

As part of the MTV Networks cuts this week, which involved the elimination of 250 jobs at the flagship network, VH1, Spike TV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, to name a few, the company’s publishing arm was also hit.

Effective with the April issue, Nick Jr. Family Magazine will cease publication, according to an internal memo written by editor in chief Freddi Greenberg. However, she hinted another magazine targeted at kids may be in the works.

Total paid and verified circ fell 3.6 percent to 638,679 in the 2006’s second half compared to the year prior, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Newsstand sales plunged l47.3 percent to just 6,340.
