For Youths, a Grim Tour on Magazine Crews
By Isn Urbina
2/21/07
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/21/us/21magcrew.html?_r=2&ref=todayspaper&oref=slogin%22%22&oref=slogin

Two days after graduating from high school last June, Jonathan Pope left his home in Miamisburg, Ohio, to join a traveling magazine sales crew, thinking he would get to “talk to people, party at night and see the country.”

Over the next six months, he and about 20 other crew members crossed 10 states, peddling subscriptions door to door, 10 to 14 hours a day, six days a week. Sleeping three to a room in cheap motels, lowest seller on the floor, they survived some days on less than $10 in food money while their earnings were kept “on the books” for later payment.

By then, Mr. Pope said, he had seen several friends severely beaten by managers, he and several other crew members were regularly smoking methamphetamine with prostitutes living down the motel hallway, and there were warrants out for his arrest in five states for selling subscriptions without a permit.

Monkeyshines: Felix web lad mag a go
By Heidi Dawley
2/13/07
http://www.medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_10292.asp

Three months ago, yet another lad’s mag launched into Britain’s slumping men’s magazine sector. But this launch was different. Rather than a print title, Monkey, as it was called, was a free, weekly online magazine.

The big puzzle for media people was just how well this publication, from Dennis Publishing, would do, and certainly a lot was seen to be at stake. A successful launch would potentially open up a whole new field of magazine publishing.

The word on Monkey: So far, so good. Audited figures released last week report an open rate topping 200,000 per week on average, double the publisher’s stated target. That’s the number of subscribers who actually open an email sent out to take readers to the latest edition.

It’s A Not-So-Small Video World After All
By Steve Cohn
2/21/07
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

I asked one of the principals at a leading ad agency today about what the next great iteration of the Web might be, and he answered I believe we are entering a much more visual stage.

The exec predicts that online video and tv as we know it will begin blending in unforeseen ways, with each one feeling more like the other. Virtualized tv is already here. You can slip into an avatar persona and occupy fully realized 3-D spaces for Showtime's L Word and MTV's Laguna Beach. Audience members become content participants in these worlds, where they talk to cast members, attend advance screenings of upcoming episodes with other avatars/fans, and sometimes create their own alternative lives within the space.

In other words, magazine brands have a lot to contend with. We will always read--sure –but as the Internet does become a more visual medium, we won't have to read as much. As if on cue, a tsunami of announcements regarding magazine-branded video filled broadband last week as many titles seem to be agreeing with our ad executive that it is a visual world. Time Inc. announced that it would be rolling out video for many of its magazine sites in a partnership with video tech provider Brightcove, a company that has been targeting print brands. And accompanying the Valentine's Day release of its 2007 Swimsuit issue, SI.COM had 60 discrete videos available on site.

The Heir to Bill Cunningham?

When Scott Schuman, the amateur photographer who runs the fashion blog The Sartorialist, first attempted to take a photograph of Carine Roitfeld, editor in chief of French Vogue and mom to New York “It” fille Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, at the spring 2007 Burberry show in Milan, she had no idea who he was. “I was trying to take a picture of her, and I don’t use flash,” Mr. Schuman said the other day, “so I was having a hard time focusing, and I could tell she was getting a little frustrated.” Luckily, Fabien Baron, the former creative director of Harper’s Bazaar and one of the industry’s foremost photographers, was also on the scene. “He leaned over and he said, ‘Give him a chance; I’ve seen his work and he’s really good.’ So, for the whole rest of that trip, she was very nice and very calm.”

Things were even better in Paris, after Ms. Roitfeld had had a chance to view some of Mr. Schuman’s work. “She literally stopped her car on Rue St. Honor?,” he said with satisfaction, “and said, ‘Oh, come here! I really like your photographs! Take more of me.’” An upcoming issue of French Vogue is slated to feature that photograph, along with ones of others by Mr. Schuman, including mega-stylists Emmanuelle Alt and Anastasia Barbieri.

C’est incroyable! Since it began in September 2005, The Sartorialist (thesartorialist.blogspot.com) has become a heavily frequented pit stop along the information superhighway for style watchers in and out of the fashion business. “It is sort of a mini–Who’s Who of the fashion industry,” said Nick Sullivan, the fashion director of Esquire magazine, the first traditional print outlet to publish shots by Mr. Schuman (in its August 2006 issue). “Real people. Ordinary guys on the street, like bankers trying to get it right.”
