Chasing Dennis
By Amy Wicks

Dennis Publishing has finally acknowledged that it's exploring its sale options, so let the speculation games begin. Maxim, along with its 31 international editions, and Stuff and Blender, could follow in the footsteps of Reader's Digest and welcome the deep pockets of a private equity shop, or the magazines could go the more traditional route of being bought by another publisher, according to industry analysts and observers. Meanwhile, some believe the lad mags could instead go to the highest bidder among larger media companies that lack a publishing business but still cater to a male-dominated audience, such as an Internet player.

One media analyst eyes Playboy Enterprises as a possible suitor. "They would attract a younger generation," he said. "If I was Christie Hefner, I'd buy it." Another analyst said Playboy has far too many issues that need to be dealt with and thus probably isn't going to make a move. Playboy did not comment by press time.

As usual, the regular list of publishing names that seem to pop up every time a sale is announced are again being mentioned — namely Hearst Magazines and Time Inc. A spokeswoman for Hearst said the company has no interest in buying the magazines, while a Time Inc. spokeswoman said the company doesn't comment on rumors or speculation. MORE ONLINE

Preserving Beauty
By Stephanie D. Smith

As the market for anti-aging beauty and skin products expands, brands are targeting older women and, in some cases, featuring more mature ones in their ad campaigns. That trend plays well for Rodale's Prevention, which is known more for headlines on walking off extra pounds than advice on preventing wrinkles. And beauty advertisers are increasingly courting Prevention's baby-boomer audience, which has a median age of 52.8. Ad pages stemming from the category have more than doubled in three years, a growth driven primarily by skin care and mass beauty brands including Dove, Nivea, Curel and Cover Girl. "We always struggled to carry the Cover Girl business, but when they brought back Christie Brinkley…we became a core book on their plan," said Prevention publisher Bob Ziltz. Prevention carries about eight pages a month now of beauty advertising, but Ziltz predicts that could expand to about 12 pages per issue since the title has hired new staffers with experience in the category, such as associate publisher Diane Malloy, who was previously at Teen People, and attends more trade shows and events, such as CTFA.

As beauty ad pages have expanded, new editor in chief Liz Vaccariello also plans to double the number of pages the magazine dedicates to beauty as part of a redesign debuting in April. She's expanding the front-of-book beauty section from about five pages to nine, and will include features on seasonal beauty topics on a quarterly basis. Makeup artist Bobbi Brown will also continue to write a monthly column.

'Esquire' Gets a Web Facelift

Esquire today became the first of Hearst Magazines' big books to receive a much-needed web facelift, adding larger photos, easier navigation, an improved search engine and, of course, new online-only content.

Like many magazine publishers and traditional content players across the board, Hearst has ramped up its digital capabilities, particularly since the formation last March of a digital-media unit. This year it is adding mobile sites, starting last month with Seventeen, Cosmopolitan and Cosmo Girl.

New Klosterman piece For Esquire, the web exclusives will reside in a piece of prime real estate called "The Side," where Chuck Klosterman has already posted a timely piece on Britney Spears' antics this week called "Why Britney? Why?" The section will also include a new song to stream or download most days. It's not a blog, but a place for short items that track real-time events.

MMR Studies Most-Read Mags by Race, Ethnicity

Among all adults, People, Better Homes and Gardens and AARP The Magazine are the most-read titles, according to Monroe Mendelsohn Research. But the list gets varied when broken down by race and ethnic group, the firm found.

Among Hispanic adults, National Geographic and Sports Illustrated are more popular than they are with all adults, according to the data from MMR’s 2006 Publication Research Satisfaction Survey. MMR asked adults which titles they’d read in the past six months.

National Geographic and SI ranked fifth and seventh, respectively, among Hispanics versus ninth and 10th among all adults, respectively. And Cosmopolitan and Entertainment Weekly, which didn’t make the top 10 for all adults, cracked the list for Hispanics at No. 10 and 9, respectively.

Graydon Carter's Academy Awards dinner/party at West Los Angeles' Morton's is now a fixture, but we remember the editor-in-chief's (since August 1992) relatively intimate gathering at the 1994 debut. This Sunday (February 25), there may be as much press as guests (estimated 800-strong). Meanwhile, Architectural Digest opens its fifth Oscar "Greenroom" at the Kodak Theatre for presenters, with outgoing vp/publisher Amy Churgin telling min that the d?cor will be "ecologically themed." (Giulio Capua will host, with Churgin having "traded jobs" with him at Gourmet.) Entertainment Weekly's New York party will attract 180 to Elaine's; People will have pre-Oscar dailies (as it did for the Grammys earlier this month); and Lucky's Allyson Waterman joins Vogue's Andr? Leon Talley as co-hosts of ABC-TV's "Red Carpet" pre-show (8 p.m./Eastern). So...dress well.
