Radar Returns for a Third Try in the Buzz Business
By MATTHEW KARNITSCHNIG and EMILY STEEL
February 26, 2007

It's one of the more unlikely revivals in recent magazine history. Radar, a glossy magazine about pop culture and scandal that has been launched twice in the past four years, is back for a third run at newsstands.

Radar's attempt at resurrection might seem quixotic at a time when magazines are losing advertisers, firing workers and often scrambling to show the world they have an Internet strategy. But successful magazines still can be more profitable than their Web counterparts.

Radar will be closely watched for what it says about the properties of buzz -- that elusive word-of-mouth phenomenon the ad industry is increasingly trying to figure out and use to its advantages. Radar springs from the buzz-intensive media hothouses of New York, Los Angeles and other big cities. Its editor in chief, Maer Roshan, is a battle-scarred veteran of these worlds.

2. GOOD magazine
The 51 Best* Magazines Ever
Introduction By Bigshot Editor Graydon Carter
February 26, 2007
http://www.goodmagazine.com/section/Features/the_best_magazines_ever

The essential strength of a magazine is its ability to amplify. An idea, or an image, or a story, set within the pages of a magazine and assembled by the right hands, can become the grist of breakfast chatter, dinner-party conversation, or elective body debate around the world. Until recently, with the advent of USA Today and the national editions of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, newspapers were by and large local endeavors. Magazines were national, and as they became international, their power of amplification grew exponentially. A woman photographs a dam. Nothing noteworthy in this, except that the woman is Margaret Bourke-White and the structure is the Fort Peck Dam. A photograph from that shoot appears on the cover of the first issue of Life and becomes one of the most known feats of human engineering in the world. That is amplification.

A magazine—like the smart, charming gazette you hold in your hands, even in this age of electronic everything everywhere, is a marvelous invention. In America, Ben Franklin is credited with conceiving of the first such publication, in 1741. (It was called The General Magazine, and it began a trend that exists to this day—within six months it had closed its doors.) Another essential difference between newspapers and magazines is this: News-papers tell you about the world; magazines tell you about their world—and by association, your world. Writers, photographers, editors, and designers bundle the slice of the world they have chosen to explore and deliver it to you in a singularly affordable, transportable, lendable, replaceable, disposable, recyclable package. You can buy a magazine almost anywhere. Publishers will even deliver it to your door, for less than the cost of going out into the hurried street to find and purchase one.

I admire, or have admired, most of the magazines the editors of GOOD have chosen as milestones or bellwethers—and I don’t mean just Spy or Vanity Fair. But I have my own temple of greats. These magazines were original in concept and execution, and in their own ways, either minor or major, helped propel the idea of the magazine to its current state.

Google in Content Deal With Media Companies
By LOUISE STORY
February 26, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/26/technology/26google.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Google built an empire delivering advertisements across the Internet, and now it plans to distribute content from media companies just as aggressively.

Google is working with Dow Jones & Company, Cond? Nast, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and other large content companies to syndicate their video content on other Web sites. The videos appear inside Google ad boxes on sites that are relevant to the content of the videos, and advertisements run during or after the content. Google shared the ad revenue with the video provider and with the sites that show the videos.

There are already video ad networks that make similar deals, and NBC Universal is attempting something similar. But the Google experiment could be more widespread since the company already has a vast reach on the Internet.

DEAL TO FINISH IN RUNNING MAG BIZ

Looking to extend its lead in the fast-growing media market for running enthusiasts, Runner's World publisher Rodale has agreed to buy smaller magazine Running Times from Fitness Publishing.

Running Times, popular among competitive runners and race directors, will remain separate from Runner's World, which is the premier magazine for joggers and more serious road runners.

"Runner's World is already No. 1," Rodale CEO Steve Murphy told The Post. "Adding the most respected title for the competitive community really rounds us out."

Teen Mag Publishers Eye Web Expansion
By Tony Case
February 26, 2007
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003549950

When Ann Shoket took over last month as editor of the Queen Bee of the teen titles, Hearst Magazines’ 2 million-circ Seventeen, she wanted her team to immerse themselves in the mindset of a teenage girl. So at her first staff meeting, she served up cases of Red Bull and big bags of Oreos.

“The feeling I want every page of the magazine to have is this exuberant energy of being a teenager,” said Shoket, who Hearst brought over from in-house rival CosmoGirl, where she had served as executive editor since 2003. “It’s fun being 17.”

But these have not been carefree times for the teen market, though. Last year, two titles, Time Inc.’s Teen People and Hachette Filipacchi Media’s Elle Girl, were killed off (but live on online). The remaining three, including Cond? Nast’s wildly successful spinoff Teen Vogue, are duking it out for a finite number of health/beauty and fashion ads, even though Teen Vogue does continue to mine gold from luxury accounts.

DUNNE AND DUSTED?: There's renewed speculation over Dominick Dunne's future as a special correspondent at Vanity Fair. Talk began last year that Dunne's time at the general interest magazine may be drawing to a close, but those rumors died by December. Now they're back — with some saying his contract won't be renewed and others suggesting he will be asked to take a different, or lesser, role at the magazine.

NEW MAN: Djimon Hounsou, the Academy Award-nominated actor for "Blood Diamond," will next be featured in the fall Calvin Klein Underwear advertising campaign. A Calvin Klein spokeswoman said it's too soon to say where the campaign will be shot or which photographer will be chosen, but the shoot will take place sometime during the next six to eight weeks. Hounsou is the ninth man to be featured in an underwear campaign and the first actor in more than a decade. Calvin Klein's last underwear model was international soccer star Freddie Ljungberg.

UN-FORTUNE-ATE COVER: Is Fortune trying to insert a bit of Page Six voyeurism into its business reporting? Private equity king Steve Schwarzman made headlines with a spectacular, multimillion- dollar 60th birthday party Feb. 13, where several hundred guests were entertained by Patti LaBelle, Rod Stewart and Martin Short, among others, at the Park Avenue Armory. The event was such a scene that even the Time Inc. business biweekly wrote about the party's details in its March 5 cover story featuring Schwarzman and his firm, The Blackstone Group.

Looking for a social roommate to rent a room in a 3BR apartment in Jersey City, NJ starting March 15th. Rent is $533 not including utilities. It's the top floor apartment in a 2-story house - and you'd be living with 2 fabulous people. Lease is very flexible - month to month. Dishwasher in apt. You will share a bathroom with 1 other person. Parking on street is available. Apartment is very new - built about 2 years ago - on a neighborhoodish block in the Heights. Washer and dryer in the garage. 3-4 blocks to a big liquor store, Stop and Shop Supermarket, and downtown Central Avenue shops and stores. Commute to New York is easy - the house is 1 block to a bus that runs to the Hoboken PATH station. 2 blocks to buses that run to downtown Jersey City PATH and Port Authority/Bayonne. Now to you - it's very important that you be outgoing and openminded, respectful and responsible in paying rent and bills, and you must be a tidy person. Sometimes the dishes pile up, but we are pretty good about keeping the place cozy and clean. We like to hang out and have fun, have people over, and often times we come home late. If interested, please email Erika at imbertina@gmail.com.
