******* Is Bonnie Fuller getting ready to make a quick getaway? Sources say the American Media Inc. editorial director has been quietly making inquiries in hopes of finding a new job. "She's making calls to friends at major publishers to learn if there's any interest in her services," says one source. Another notes that Fuller, who's been at AMI since 2003, has recently been in touch with an executive placement firm. Fuller, via a spokesman, calls those claims "bullshit." But there's no question life has been getting uncomfortable for her—or as uncomfortable as it can get for someone who receives $2 million a year to oversee exclamation mark placement. Joe Dolce, who has served as Fuller's deputy in charge of Star since her arrival, is leaving the company in a few weeks. His replacement, Candace Trunzo, is a longtime tabloid hand rather than a handpicked Fuller hire. Though AMI chairman David Pecker has insisted there's no truth to rumors that Star will relocate operations to Boca Raton, Florida (where AMI has its corporate headquarters), Trunzo's family is there, and she has told Star staffers she has no plans to move to New York permanently. "Everyone expects there's going to be layoffs and movement," says one insider. If you're thinking that Fuller's contract will keep her pinned down, think again. Though her new three-year deal, signed last summer, has not yet been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission—the spokesman says it will be filed when the company makes its long-overdue restatement of fiscal 2006 earnings—the previous contract required only that she give 30 days notice before quitting. A former Army scientist named by investigators as a "person of interest" in the 2001 anthrax attacks, Dr. Steven Hatfill, has settled his $10 million libel suit against Vanity Fair and Reader's Digest after the two magazines agreed to retract any implication that the bioweapons specialist was behind the deadly anthrax mailings. A statement issued today by a lawyer for Dr. Hatfill, Hassan Zavareei, said the case "has now been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of all the parties." He did not indicate whether any money changed hands. A spokeswoman for Reader's Digest, Ellen Morgenstern, confirmed the settlement, but she would not elaborate. "All I can tell you is we're very satisfied with the results. I can't get into any detail," she said. A call seeking comment from Vanity Fair's parent company, Cond? Nast Publications, was not immediately returned. MORE ONLINE

Well, you've heard today from those who swear that each and every letter you read in a magazine has come directly from a reader (albeit one more than likely serving time on the orders of the state). Now, let's take a look at the other, more believable side. After the jump, voluminous evidence that certain publications—some of which you even read—play fast and loose with their letter section. When I interned at Stuff, it was common practice for interns to write a large portion of the letters to the editor. We rarely had enough letters from people who weren't fucking insane prison inmates to fill the space, so somebody had to do it. This was the case at another mag I worked at, as well (not going to name names on that one though). I always assumed fake letters to the editor were commonplace. And apparently I was right. I spent a couple of years editing the letters column of a major magazine, and let me tell you...it wasn't easy filling the space with pity and cogent missives. Let's face it: people are idiots. Monocle, the comeback title for Tyler Br?l?, has been launched on both sides of the Atlantic and is most likely the only magazine out there with a Japanese naval helicopter pilot on the front cover and a Gucci men's wear ad on the back. In between — and on four types of paper stock — the magazine tackles the "semiotics" of Iranian president's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's wardrobe and sits down for a Q&A with Chile's finance minister Andres Velasco, "the most handsome finance minister out there," joked Br?l?, editor in chief, chairman and founder. The magazine — which has a cover price of $10 and looks more like a literary or foreign affairs review — also features stories ranging from second-generation Italian hip-hop to D?sseldorf's vending machine trade fair and the quirky English bookshop Barter Books in Northumberland. On the product front, Monocle zeroes in on a humble Wisconsin moccasin maker and a Japanese company that's segued from samurai swords to golf clubs to Roger Vivier's python sandals. There's even a Manga-style comic book with product placement from Prada and Audi stuffed into the back of the magazine. The initial circulation target is 100,000, with 10 issues per year. The goal is to boost circulation to 250,000 over the next three years. In tandem with the magazine, Br?l? is launching a Web site with plans for a Web content alliance between the International Herald Tribune (where Br?l? will become a columnist in early March) and Monocle, although an IHT spokeswoman said the details were still being hammered out. Br?l? said the first issue drew more than $1 million in advertising from a mix of fashion, finance and luxury goods companies including Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, UBS, Cathay Pacific, Mandarin Hotels and Panasonic. 1.
