Timely Exit
By Stephanie D. Smith
February 28, 2007

Another high-level executive is leaving the halls of Time Inc. Robin Domeniconi, who was promoted to Time Inc. Media Group president in December 2005 after a successful run as president and publisher of Real Simple, will leave her post March 5. Her exit comes only a month after Nora McAniff, whom chief executive Ann Moore promoted to co-chief operating officer at the same time Domeniconi was elevated, left her post for personal reasons. Neither departure is related to the layoffs at Time Inc., which will affect 289 positions. Domeniconi said she wanted to go back to building brands, which was not something a corporate job allowed. Her next move, she said, was to be determined. "We shall assume that my next job will be with a brand that I have a passion for. That's not necessarily in the publishing world," she said, though she did say she was in talks with Time Inc. and Time Warner, as well as other non-publishing companies.

Replacing Domeniconi will be Wayne Powers, president of Time Inc. Media Networks Inc. and Targeted Media. Powers will be responsible for corporate sales and marketing for Time Inc.'s approximately 130 titles as well as research, Custom Publishing, MNI and Targeted Media.

Digital Get-Down

Media job seekers, get thee to the studio — or else to your laptop. So said the panelists and speakers at the Magazine Publishers of America's Magazines 24/7 digital media conference, held Tuesday in New York. Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia's president and chief executive officer Susan Lyne and Dennis Publishing's president and ceo Stephen Colvin said they were adding salespeople, marketers and programmers for their new multimedia products, while Time Inc.'s new in-house digital media and video production division will likely add more staffers over time.

But what to call these new hybrid employees? In a panel on Web video, Todd Unger, senior vice president of Time4 Digital, said his staff had borrowed a term from TV combining producer and editor: predator. Good news for potential "predators": Forbes.com editor and Forbes executive editor Paul Maidment, whose Web video investments have so far outpaced those of the other presenters' companies in both production value and scope, noted that the income of editorial talent with on-camera skills "was trending upward" — less than TV, but higher than print. (Travel may also be involved: In a separate panel, New York magazine's Web site editorial director Ben Williams said the title had flown the ladies of gofugyourself.com from Los Angeles to New York Fashion Week to tap their built-in audience.)

Magazine Web sites are working on building their own followings — Forbes' video offerings, produced out of two studios, are so widely watched that moderator Johnnie L. Roberts of Newsweek called them "porn in the brokerage houses." Seventeen editor in chief Ann Shoket, fresh off what Roberts characterized as her "sassy overachievement at CosmoGirl," warned, "We are not porn. We are PG-13 on our Web site." She showed a video from Seventeen.com's Web site, to be relaunched next week, which featured a handful of teenage girls being canvassed on the streets of Manhattan about their wardrobes, complete with presumably youthful graffiti fonts and neon intertitles.

Hairy Relationship

Get ready for another fashion-related reality show. Allure and hair care line Nexxus are hoping to capitalize on reality television by tying into the new Bravo reality contest "Shear Genius." The show features 12 hairstylists competing to win $100,000 in start-up money to open a salon and an apprenticeship with Nexxus celebrity stylist Roy Teeluck. Allure is the official media partner, lending fashion director Michael Carl to be a judge on the show, while Nexxus is the official hair care sponsor. Nexxus will also be a key part of one of the episodes, and will create a marketing plan with sponsored online and mobile features and pop-up salons tied to the show.

Nexxus, owned by Alberto-Culver, may have been swayed to jump on the reality bandwagon after sister brand TRESemm? sponsored Bravo's popular "Project Runway." The new show, according to Gina Lazaro, Nexxus' senior director, marketing, also provides a strong platform for reaching new and younger consumers and still connect with salon stylists as the company continues to relaunch the brand into mass retail. "Shear Genius" makes its debut April 11, and features actress Jaclyn Smith as host and Sally Hershberger as lead judge.

New Republics’s Editor in Chief Sells His Share of the Magazine
By Katharine Q. Seelye

Martin Peretz, who has been a part owner of The New Republic for more than three decades, has given up his share of the magazine, selling his interest to CanWest Global Communications, which now assumes full control. Mr. Peretz is to remain as editor in chief.

CanWest, which bought a 30 percent interest in the magazine last year, announced yesterday that a subsidiary, CanWest Media Works International, had acquired a 100 percent interest in The New Republic. Terms were not announced.

New Republic editors and CanWest executives said last week that the company had bought out Roger Hertog and Michael Steinhardt, two financial backers, but Mr. Peretz still owned about a quarter interest. Not until yesterday did the company announce that it had assumed full control and that Mr. Peretz was no longer a financial partner.
