New Teams

Seventeen editor in chief Ann Shoket is looking for a new number two — executive editor Jillian Mackenzie is returning to Allure as deputy editor. Mackenzie joined Seventeen right before former editor in chief Atoosa Rubenstein resigned from her post in November. Mackenzie stepped in as interim editor in chief at Seventeen until Hearst decided to move Shoket over from her executive editor's position at Cosmogirl. Mackenzie will join Allure on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Marie Claire's fairly radical makeover under editor in chief Joanna Coles has taken place heretofore with little turnover. That's about to change: Beauty director Didi Gluck is leaving to become executive beauty director and deputy editor at Shape magazine after a long tenure at Marie Claire. Gluck reportedly had been in the running for the editorship of Seventeen. Senior editor Carrie Sloan has left to take over as editor in chief of Tango magazine. She replaces Hilary Black, who will stay on as a contributing editor, but begins editing an anthology on love and money starting in mid-April. Sloan has been replaced by O's Lauren Iannotti, whose title is articles editor. Gluck's successor has not been named.

Out of Print

Web 2.0 has claimed another print convert: Susan Cernek, previously Elle's fashion news editor, has been tapped by fashion portal Glam.com as fashion editor. And for the first time, the year-and-a-half-old site is sending its own correspondents, probably two or three people, to Paris and Milan for the collections. (The site covered the New York shows extensively, but relied on its partnerships with magazines like Marie Claire for blogs about the European shows.) Glam.com founder and chairman Samir Arora said the goal was to cover fashion in a more accessible manner, as well as to use the Internet's advantages.

Glam.com, said Cernek, "isn't hampered or limited by the same kinds of confines of magazine publishing, in terms of timing, layout, etc. There's room for growth." She is the first person to be called fashion editor, joining a small but growing staff with backgrounds in print and on the Web, with titles like beauty editor and merchandising editor.

Creating a 'Party in a Magazine' at 'Seventeen'

Millions of teen girls are going to finally find out what Seventeen minus Atoosa equals when the first issue from successor Editor in Chief Ann Shoket arrives March 13. They'll also get the debut of an official Shoket/Seventeen MySpace page and a blog by Ms. Shoket, who was executive editor at Hearst Magazines sibling Cosmo Girl until Seventeen's top spot opened up last year. For now there's the first Shoket editor's letter to peruse online -- and her answers to a few questions from MediaWorks.

MediaWorks: What do we know about Seventeen's target audience today, and how has that audience changed over the last five or 10 years?

Ann Shoket: I have worked in teen-girl magazines for 10 years now. Teen girls have absolutely changed in that time. What they're interested in has changed; the way they relate to the world has changed.

Details' David Beckham Double Take
By Dylan Stableford

By all accounts, David Beckham is one extraordinarily good looking fella. Pictures of the soon-to-be member of the L.A. Galaxy are so ubiquitous that you wouldn't be remiss in thinking that they all look the same.

The March '07 cover of Details [above, right], however, seems particularly familiar. And for good reason. A similar shot appeared on the front of the November '05 issue [above, left]. When the futboller signed a $250 million contract with the left coast club, Details editor Dan Peres made a last-minute call to put Mr. Posh Spice on this month's cover, assigning Michael Hirschorn to write a piece titled "Will America Buy David Beckham." A shoot couldn't be arranged, so the mag was forced to delve into its archives.

No word on what the subject of the original cover story was but Peres says it's been killed permanently. Somewhere, a publicist is pissed.
