The New New Republic? Fatter, for Starters
By PATRICIA COHEN
March 12, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/12/arts/12repu.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

First, what hasn’t changed about the venerable 92-year-old magazine, The New Republic, which is making its debut today as a biweekly with a new design and a new owner:

Leon Wieseltier still presides over the books and arts section; Martin Peretz, the previous owner of 33 years who maintains the title editor in chief, is still writing regularly; the TRB column, as well as the scarcity of female bylines, also remains.

And as the editor, Franklin Foer, announces in an editorial upfront: “We still believe, more than ever, in fact, in journalism produced on dead trees. Yes, it takes greater time and resources to put words on paper. But that, in turn, demands an investment in the craftsmanship of writing, reporting, and editing that can yield the defining, contextual pieces that we hope won’t fade in relevance over a week, a month, or sometimes even years.” These longer articles, he continues, “intend to shape opinions and events as much as they respond to them.”

Luxe Mags Tap High-Rollers

More than 13,574 Lexus cars rolled off lots in the U.S. last January, nearly 19 percent more than the same period the year prior. Bentley sales were up nearly 16 percent the same month, while sales of Maseratis rose 20 percent. Those figures shouldn’t be a surprise, given the number of people these days with the means to drop six figures on a car. According to Cap Gemini’s World Wealth Report, there were 8.3 million millionaires and billionaires worldwide in 2005, an increase of 10 percent over the year before.

For magazines that serve the very rich, these are good times.

CurtCo Media’s Robb Report, the magazine for the “ultra-high net worth,” whose readers have an average household income of $1.4 million per year and average total liquid net assets of $7.7 million, recorded a 10.4 percent gain in ad pages last year, per the Mediaweek Monitor. (Pages declined 16.9 percent through April, a period when the magazine faces tough comparisons with a 30th anniversary issue and a number of new-car introductions in the same period a year ago.) Dan Galpern, COO, said he expects another strong year for Robb Report and CurtCo’s 13 other titles, which include Worth and ShowBoats International. “The consumer base in the ultra-affluent market is one of the if not the fastest-growing market,” he said.

Hearst Magazines’ Town & Country also is flying high, with ad pages ahead 3.7 percent through April. And American Express Publishing grew ad pages 8 percent last year across its six titles and is targeting growth in the high single-digits this year, said Ed Kelly, president and CEO. “Our readers are wealthier, and there are more of them,” he noted.

TIME BREAKS MOLD IN REDESIGN
By Keith J. Kelly
March 12, 2007
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03122007/business/time_breaks_mold_in_redesign_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

This week Time magazine will introduce its most-sweeping redesign in 15 years - an overhaul that includes four new sections, a smaller cover logo and retro-70's-era headlines inside.

There will be more short news items - some no longer than a paragraph - and points of departure to Web sites all through the mag.

"It's all about making it easier for the reader to navigate," said Rick Stengel, Time managing editor since mid-2006.

With Redesign of Time, Sentences Run Forward
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE
March 12, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/12/business/media/12time.html?ref=media

Having just turned 84, Time magazine is coming out with a new look and editorial approach on Friday.

In: A cleaner, simpler design, heavy on labels at the top of each page and the names of its columnists in World War II size type — the better to brand with.

Out: The last remnants of Time’s signature syntax, parodied by the humorist Wolcott Gibbs with his phrase, “Backward ran sentences until reeled the mind.” Richard Stengel, Time’s new managing editor, said the inverted syntax would vanish from the Milestones section, where it still crops up in obituaries, as in: “Died. Of pneumonia.”

Memo Pad: ARTISTIC AVOCATION
By Irin Carmon

Michael Hainey's day job as deputy editor of GQ hasn't prevented him from pursuing a side line as a painter, as seen, somewhat unobtrusively, in a story in the spring 2007 O at Home and an accompanying segment on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The feature on the decoration of designer Nate Berkus' new West Village apartment reveals a Hainey original on his living room wall. "Nate saw it on the wall of my girlfriend's apartment and asked if he could have it," said Hainey, who has been painting for about five years. The oil and charcoal on canvas is part of a series of 16 and depicts a crow with text that reads, "Always on the edge/of somewhere." A future GQ cover line perhaps?

The Swimsuits Were Skimpy, but the Magazine Was Invisible
By Maria Aspan
March 12, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/12/business/media/12mag.html?ref=media

Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue — devoted to the athletic rigors of wearing a wet bikini — is often criticized for its soft-core content. But this year, another controversy erupted over the magazine’s self-censorship.

Public libraries often find that the issue quickly disappears from the shelves. But last week, some subscribing librarians found that this year’s swimsuit issue had never even arrived. A spokesman for Sports Illustrated, a Time Warner property, confirmed on Friday that the Feb. 14 swimsuit issue had been withheld from about 21,000 subscribers identified as “libraries or classrooms.”

Many of the subscribers affected were libraries at universities and other educational institutions. None of the affected subscribers had been informed of the decision to withhold the issue.

Cheers and Jeers for Cond? Nast
By Maria Aspan
March 12, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/12/business/media/12graydon.html?ref=media

In its March/April issue, Good magazine offers a list of “the 51 best magazines ever,” which includes some eclectic choices, some praise and a couple of sharp jabs at the company that employs the “bigshot editor” who wrote the list’s introduction.

That editor is Graydon Carter, who runs Vanity Fair for Cond? Nast, which makes repeat appearances on the list, with The New Yorker at No. 2 (“a consistently brilliant editorial vision”) and Mr. Carter’s magazine at No. 31 (“If culture is the collection of stories we tell about ourselves, Vanity Fair might just be our greatest raconteur”). But the company does not escape unscathed.

Two magazines, Wired (No. 8) and Details (No. 17), are pointedly included only for the eras preceding their acquisitions by Cond? Nast. According to Good, the publisher’s 1998 purchase of Wired “gradually sapped the infectious energy that so characterized Wired’s early years,” while Details “went on to have countless identity crises, and no longer comes even close to downtown cool.”
