ABC Addresses Multimedia Reporting
By Lucia Moses

The Audit Bureau of Communications board last week endorsed a proposal that would let consumer magazines detail their print circulation and ABC-audited Web site traffic in a single report, called a Multimedia Publisher’s Statement. Meeting last week, the board asked its buyer and publisher advisory committees to make recommendations for the optional report at its next meeting, scheduled to take place in July.

The decision was among a few by the board that addressed ways to allow members to report their total reach in an increasingly integrated media landscape. For newspapers, the Audit Bureau gave preliminary approval to let newspapers report a combined print and online readership figure along with their overall Web site activity. The data, which would be verified by the ABC, would let advertisers analyze audience and circulation information by market area.

If the proposal is approved at the July board meeting, newspapers could start reporting their total readership in the September six-month reporting period.

Vanity Fair editor in chief Graydon Carter, recently anointed by the National Resources Defense Council as a champion of the environment, will, in a few months, finally align his politics and his vehicle. A spokeswoman for the magazine said come June, Carter will trade in his SUV for a Lexus hybrid. Last year, around the time VF's first green issue was unveiled, Carter told WWD, "When I went shopping for a car, there was no hybrid that could hold us all [his family]. There is now: a Toyota with seating for seven. And when my lease is up next year, I'm switching to that." Even Robert F. Kennedy Jr. saw fit to rib Carter about his choice of ride: "Graydon drives a Prius; it's just the size of a Suburban and the shape of a Suburban," Kennedy joked in his speech at the NRDC benefit on Wednesday.

The tenure of Alexandra Peers, who was named LTB Media's editorial director last month, is over before it even began. While filling the shoes of departed editorial director James Truman was never going to be easy, the heralded arrival of the former Wall Street Journal Weekend Edition features editor was further complicated when it was revealed in a press release on Feb. 13 — before any contract had been signed. Peers was meant to begin revitalizing the company on Thursday, but owner Louise MacBain told her senior management Monday that Peers would not be joining after all.

A source close to the situation said Peers was concerned about LTB Media's financials and worried about the future of magazines like Culture & Travel. (Three other titles at the company, Art + Auction, Modern Painters and Artinfo.com have been notably freer of drama). Peers wrote in an e-mail, "I greatly enjoyed talking to Louise, but we were not ultimately able to come to terms which would have enabled me to join LTB."

Also Monday, LTB Media's circulation director Debby Lowenstein told colleagues she would be leaving the company to work at Tango magazine. She and MacBain could not be reached by press time.

Don't expect Ann Shoket to bring a whole new look to Seventeen as she takes the magazine into its post-Atoosa years. "The magazine is doing well and it's not my goal to change it," Shoket told WWD. Her goal is, however, to have Seventeen celebrate the fun of being a teenager. The April issue, out today, is the first complete issue she's edited, but May and June will roll out new elements to reflect her vision. "Imagine if you had four Red Bulls and a bag of Oreos and stayed up all night. That's the type of fun, caffeinated hyper energy that I want the magazine to have," said Shoket.

That recipe will manifest itself through three principles — fun, confidence and interactivity. "Fun is not more embarrassing moments or more quizzes," said Shoket. But it does mean, for one, playing down the darker news stories. "I've moved away from ripped-from-the-headline stories and toward buzz stories — what are people of the world talking about — and putting that in context with our readers." Shoket plans to include more input from the real girl models in the magazine, plus a new celebrity advice column called "Letter to Me at 17."

The interactivity will play out in Seventeen's revamped Web site, unveiled Monday, which will include a daily blog penned by Shoket (every story in the magazine will also point back to the revamped site). On Friday, a series of weekly podcasts will launch on iTunes. The first series, sponsored by Gillette Satin Care, has beauty editor Desi Gallegos interviewing Fr?d?ric Fekkai about hairstyling tips and Mally Roncal on makeup.

Memo Pad: Sell Out or Die

Given a choice between extinction and putting an ad on the cover, what should a magazine do? Well, Glenn O'Brien, co-editor of art/literary title Bald Ego and GQ's Style Guy, opted for the latter. O'Brien was having drinks at Il Buco one night recently with Andy Spade and the duo hatched a stay-out-of-debt plan: Spade would provide funding in exchange for putting his Jack Spade logo on the cover of the magazine. O'Brien said this is one of the few times a magazine has sold its cover — something most titles obviously aren't eager to do. Spade has supported Bald Ego since its inception a few years ago and his work also appears inside the title in "Jack Spade Readymades," based on Marcel Duchamp's ready-made idea. Spade photographed businesses, including the Mercer Hotel and restaurant Florent that agreed to temporarily put his Jack Spade signature near the front door of each place.

Max Blagg, another Bald Ego co-editor, was at first skeptical of the Jack Spade cover "sellout" idea and initially thought O'Brien was "ready to give away our baby as eagerly as a Russian shopgirl." But he eventually came around and, as a result, this "anthology of individual works" includes Sante D'Orazio and photographer Todd Eberle. Even Cond? Nast International chairman Jonathan Newhouse pitched in, introducing the publication to the company's British distributor Comag, which distributes the magazine in the U.K.

Smokers, take note — a morning run and a stash of chocolate could help you curb the need for nicotine. Former smoker and Self editor in chief Lucy Danziger received honors Monday for leadership in media from The American Legacy Foundation for her work in raising awareness among women about the dangers of smoking. "I gave up cigarettes long before you couldn't smoke in buildings anymore, but when I did smoke it was mostly as a crutch to get through late-night closings," said Danziger. Now, she said, exercise and a few Milky Way miniatures, stashed at the candy bowl sitting at her assistant's desk, give her the necessary stamina. Danziger was honored at an event at New York's Pierre Hotel along with several other leaders.

LTB HAS NO PEERS
by Keith J. Kelly

Chaos continued to reign at Louise T. Blouin MacBain's LTB Media yesterday, as the new editorial director walked out before she officially started the job. Alexandra Peers, a longtime Wall Street Journal veteran who more recently had been freelancing and teaching, was previously hired as the editorial director two weeks ago and was expected to officially take up the post next week.

But talks broke down over a final agreement and Peers won't be joining the firm. "LTB Media and Alexandra Peers have not been able to reach a final agreement on Ms. Peers proposed appointment," said MacBain in a statement. Sources said MacBain originally agreed to pay Peers about $200,000 a year. However, the actual contract had her earning half that. MacBain also changed Peers' responsibilities.

With a new editor in chief at the helm of Seventeen magazine, you're probably on the edge of your seats wondering what direction will newbie Ann Shoket will take? Well thanks to WWD, we have our answer: "Imagine if you had four Red Bulls and a bag of Oreos and stayed up all night. That's the type of fun, caffeinated hyper energy that I want the magazine to have," said Shoket.

Which totally explains everything! Naturally, despite not quite understanding Shoket's business model, the EIC of CosmoGIRL! was quick to respond that her magazine plans to revamp its spunk by throwing itself an uppers party, featuring "enough adderall for everyone!" followed by an invigorating round of Pink vodka.
