Snatch and Go

Mary Berner has poached her first lieutenant from her old stomping grounds at Cond? Nast to join her at Reader's Digest — Suzanne Grimes, senior vice president of Cond? Nast Media Group. And sources said another departure might come as soon as today: longtime Berner chum Eva Dillon, publisher of Cookie.

Grimes' departure, which was announced to the staff Tuesday by Media Group president Richard Beckman, immediately set off chatter in the hallways of 4 Times Square as to who might succeed her. Sources said a publisher is likely to be bumped up to the slot, thus creating two big vacancies within the executive suite.

Beckman was responsible for bringing Grimes back to Cond? Nast more than two years ago and creating a position for her within the Media Group after she was fired as publisher of Glamour in 2004. In late January, Cond? Nast chief executive officer Chuck Townsend gave Grimes a special recognition award at the annual publishers' meeting in Naples, Fla.

At left, the November 13, 2006, issue of Time. At right, the current issue of Newsweek. We're thinking the cover meeting went: "Eh, stick a skull on it, who's gonna remember?"

Reviewing Monocle Like A Rock Record
By Dylan Stableford
March 13, 2007
http://www.mediabistro.com/articles/cache/a9553.asp

For a magazine that carries a $10 cover price, Monocle, the much-anticipated offering from Wallpaper* founder Tyler Br?l?, garnered a relatively disproportionate amount of press up leading up to its launch last month. When we finally got ahold of a copy, its juxtaposition with Br?l?'s old Wallpaper* digs was striking.

Out: Big, colorful, bounding glossy pages; oversized images; sleek, mod layouts awash in bold, eye-searing color. In: Cold, primary colors; small trim size; text-heavy layouts; kitschy photography that's drab and decidedly not sleek. It's as if Br?l? and a band of highbrow magazine executives set out to create the world's coolest history textbook.

If that was the goal, they didn't fail, but they've not yet succeeded, either.

This is Caf? Society?

At around 11:30 last Saturday night, two men of equally modest stature—one in a gray suit, the other in jeans and a worn jacket—were enjoying a cigarette on the corner of Bank Street and Waverly Place.

The better-dressed man was the actor Sean Penn. He was pointing at something to do with the upper reaches of a townhouse across the street. His companion, Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder, looked upward, his face peaking out from a tangle of rangy locks. He nodded, seemingly in agreement with what Mr. Penn had said. As this meeting of two great minds transpired, two photographers, standing only feet away, were idly snapping photograph after identical photograph.

Then a third, taller man approached—prompting the lensmen to scramble around for the perfect position.
