1. New York Post
To ‘Ellie’ and Back
By Business Editor
3/19/07
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03192007/business/to_ellie_and_back_business_.htm

The National Magazine Award nominations came out last week and The Post takes a look at this week's offerings from some of the honorees in the "Ellie" competition.

The New Yorker, with a pace-setting nine National Magazine Award nominations, is even more consumed than usual with the situation in Iraq. Writer George Packer tackles the plight of Iraqis who risked their lives to work with the Americans, only to be labeled traitors by their countrymen. Worse, he writes of how the U.S. government failed to intervene or protect them in cases where they were threatened or killed by insurgents. Packer wonders whether the war will create an entire class of Iraqi outcasts unable to live in their country.

New York magazine, which received seven "Ellie" nominations, calls London "the other New York" in a smackdown between cities. Although it's pretty clear where its loyalty lies, the magazine admits that London is on the rise. Apparently, those pesky Brits are catching up in finance, culture and food, while they lag in the sex and dating department.

RDA's Berner to Add Alston to Roster
By Lucia Moses

More former colleagues of Mary Berner’s are expected to resurface at Reader’s Digest Association as she moves to reorganize the company according to consumer affinity groups.

Berner, who became president and CEO of RDA March 3 when a private equity group led by Ripplewood Holdings took the company private, is expected to bring over Alyce Alston, who was a former group publisher of W, W Jewelry and Vitals magazines at Fairchild Publications, where Berner was president and CEO until the division was absorbed into Cond? Nast, according to insiders familiar with the situation.

Alston left in March 2005 to become CEO of De Beers LV US. Before coming to Fairchild, Alston had helped launch O, the Oprah Magazine, at Hearst Magazines. At RDA, she is expected to be given a division president role. Neither Berner nor Alston could be reached for comment.

Cappell: Celebrity Drives Newsstand Sales
By Lucia Moses
3/19/07
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003559447

Readers’ continued appetite for celebrity news helped improve magazine newsstand numbers in the second half of 2006, said Dan Capell, editor, Capell’s Circulation Report. Sixty-one percent of consumer magazines reported newsstand declines, versus 67 percent in the previous two six-month Audit Bureau of Circulations reporting periods, according to Capell’s March 26 issue.

“It’s driven through great degree by the success of the celebrity magazines,” Capell said.

Bauer Publishing’s Life & Style Weekly and In Touch Weekly were among the top single-copy gainers in the second half, with single copy increases of 25.3 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively. Life & Style grew overall circ 25.5 percent to 752,926 while In Touch’s rose 7.7 percent to 1.3 million. Also reporting newsstand improvement was Wenner Media’s Us Weekly, where total paid and verified circ rose 5.4 percent to 1.8 million with a 2.4 percent increase in single-copy sales.

Nevertheless, most magazines continue to battle circulation declines of varying degrees. Just over half the titles he analyzed—53 percent—reported losing total circ in the second half. (Only titles with at least 50 percent paid circ are included in the analysis.)

Buyers Unhappy With Overuse of Verified Circ
By Lucia Moses
3/19/07
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003559450

More than a year after publishers were first required to break out verified, or public place, copies on their Audit Bureau of Circulations’ statements, media buyers are expressing increasing impatience with the common practice of magazines using it to make good on their rate-base promises.

“I don’t want to see verified used as a way to make rate base—that’s a huge cause for concern,” said Brenda White, vp, director of print investment at Starcom, adding that she is “seeing it a little more than I would like.”

Robin Steinberg, senior vp, director of print investment, MediaVest, who has expressed concern about large fluctuations in verified copies, said she would recommend to clients that they not pay for those copies if there are significant issue-to-issue changes.

It's Official: Eva Dillon Leaves Cond? for Readers Digest
By Dylan Stableford

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/

If you have a Reader's Digest email, that means you're working for Reader's Digest, right?

Mary Berner, setting up her team at Reader's Digest, has been poaching people from Cond? Nast, her old stomping grounds when she headed the company's Fairchild Publications division. (She left after it became clear she'd have to report lower down the organizational chart than she'd been used to.)

One Cond? exec who'd been rumored on her way was Cookie publisher Eva Dillon. When we emailed Eva today, we got back an "out of office" message saying: "I am no longer at this email address. If you wish to contact me, please email EVA'S NEW EMAIL@rd.com" [address removed]

Memo Pad: New Hommes
By Robert Murphy
3/19/07
http://www.wwd.com/memopad/article/114063

With ubiquitous British bad-boy rocker Pete Doherty on the cover (shot by Mario Testino), the new issue of Vogues Hommes International heralds its relaunch under the editorial direction of Carine Roitfeld and editor in chief Olivier Lalanne, who took over last year from Bruno Danto, who spent only a year atop the Cond? Nast title. With the same duo that oversees French Vogue guiding the ship, the book was bound to bear similarities to its big sister. Roitfeld's proclivity for steamy photo spreads is present (one has horseshoes bound to men's crotches) as well as a certain soign? take on fashionable living, with the requisite lists of hotels and restaurants. As is par for men's mags these days, there are articles on sex (an essay on pornography and talk with Larry Flynt), an interview with a hip writer (Jay McInerney), a cool spread (John Lautner's Harpel House in L.A.) and fast cars (a white Ferrari Testarossa, naked women oblige). With a more incisive fashion sense, though, the issue counts lush photo spreads by the likes of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Patrick Demarchelier and Jeff Burton. Publisher Diane Kocupyr said the book, published in separate French and English editions, has 137 advertising pages, up 50 percent from the same issue last year. It hits newsstands Wednesday.
