Sia Michel, Top Pop Chick Once More
March 20, 2007
http://gawker.com/news/sia-michel/sia-michel-top-pop-chick-once-more-245531.php

Unceremoniously dumped (or self-dumped!) during the sale of Spin a year ago, glamourpuss Sia Michel, once the first woman to edit an American rock mag, has finally made her berth at the Times permanent. She'll now be the pop music editor, in charge of all the Arcade Fire needs of the young generation of newspaper semi-readers.

SCARLETT IS "SEXIEST" AND BEST; LINDSAY IS A SEXY BEST--AND WORST.
By Steve Cohn
March 19, 2007
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

Clearly, in Esquire's cover "race," sexiest woman alive Scarlett Johansson (November) wins easily. Lindsay Lohan was sexy and selling for Elle's September "Fall Preview," but adding kid-sister Ali to the mix proved to be a worst for CosmoGirl! (November). Halloween has always been a "great pumpkin" for Country Living, but Kate Winslet is now a two-time "pumpkin" for In Style: October 1999 (under now-People Group editor Martha Nelson) and October 2006 (under Nelson's since-2002 managing editor successor Charla Lowhan). Tyler Perry's homeless-to-riches story made him an Essence best. Not that different a "rise" from Discover's Albert Einstein a century ago. Food & Wine's March Red Hot Design sold worst, says editor-in-chief Dana Cowin, because the cover lacked food and wine.

AMI SETS THE DATE TO REPORT FISCAL '06
By Keith J. Kelly
March 20, 2007
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03202007/business/ami_sets_the_date_to_report_fiscal_06_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

It's coming.

American Media Inc.'s long overdue report for fiscal 2006 may now be only days away, according to the company's latest SEC filing.

Technically, the publisher of Star, the National Enquirer and Shape blew another deadline for reporting its fiscal results for the one-year period ending March 31, 2006, when it did not report on March 15.

Ex-New York magazine gossip columnist and author Deborah Schoeneman [left] contributes a 5,058-word piece to the April issue of Playboy that's part "blogs have changed the Hollywood gossip game" standard fare, and part public apology to Paula Froelich [right], the Page Six reporter whom Schoeneman feuded with last summer during a publicity push for her book, 4% Famous. Oddly, Schoeneman refers to Froelich as "Jane" because "if I use her real name she'll probably kill me." (Or, perhaps, Playboy's legal told Schoeneman to.)

Memo Pad

BRINGING SEXY BACK: GQ banked its best-selling issue of 2006 with its theme of "Love, Sex and Madness" last April, featuring cover model Adriana Lima. Editor in chief Jim Nelson is bringing the issue back in April with Hollywood party girl Lindsay Lohan as the cover subject. Along with Lohan's thoughts on sex and madness, gathered in an interview conducted while the actress was still in rehab, Nelson conducted a Q&A with director Pedro Almod?var. Nelson, a big fan of Almod?var's films such as "Volver'' and "Talk to Her,'' has not written a piece for the magazine since a profile of Morrissey he penned in April 2004. In addition, GQ names its Best Designers in America in a special section, including Tim Hamilton and Michael Bastian, who both were nominated for 2007 Council of Fashion Designers of America Swarovski awards for men's wear, adampluseve's Adam Lippes, Helmut Lang's Michael and Nicole Colovos and Band of Outsiders' Scott Sternberg, among others. The issue hits newsstands nationwide on March 27.

MOVING PARTS: Marie Claire creative director Paul Martinez has left Marie Claire for Men's Journal, the highest-level defection from the magazine since Joanna Coles took over as editor last year. He replaces David Matt, who left Men's Journal for Workman Publishing after two years at Wenner Media. Jennifer Barnett, who worked at Marie Claire under Glenda Bailey's successful editorship and then followed Bailey to Harper's Bazaar, recently returned to the magazine as editor at large and sources indicated she's taking an active role on covers.

GONE GREEN: Former Time Out New York editor in chief and Martha Stewart executive Cyndi Stivers appears to be working away at her latest venture, said to be a green media company with a major Web site component. Several employees have already been hired to work in offices on Manhattan's West Side. Stivers, who left her post as executive vice president of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in November, did not respond to requests for comment.

STEALING BEAUTY: Watch out Allure, Cond? Nast Traveler is making an aggressive push for more beauty advertising. Last year proved to be a flat year for beauty ad pages but the magazine is predicting a 35 percent increase by the end of 2007. On this note, the magazine is introducing a special section in its April issue that is devoted to beauty, with Dove as its sole advertiser. "We've targeted beauty as a growth category because it's highly relevant to our readership," said Lisa Hughes, vice president and publisher. This is the first time Dove has advertised in the magazine. Babs Rangaiah, director of media and entertainment at Unilever, said the company chose CN Traveler for its Dove Pro-Age campaign because the travel sector is aligned with the brand's "global approach to real beauty." A spokesman for the magazine pointed out that only 50 percent of its ads come from the travel category.

6. American Journalism Review
A New Portfolio
From February/March 2007 issue
by Paul Farhi
http://ajr.org/Article.asp?id=4300

It seems like the most counterintuitive (not to say craziest) media venture of the decade. At a time when print is fading, when business magazines are struggling, when monthly frequency seems glacial in an age of digital speed, magazine giant Cond? Nast is preparing to launch a...monthly business magazine. Nearly two years in the making, Cond? Nast Portfolio will hit newsstands with its first issue in days. Its very existence seems to raise a defiant question: Can top-shelf narrative journalism, plus posh photography and design, overcome the forces arrayed against it?

Portfolio has been the buzz of New York's gossipy media and advertising circles for months, despite, or maybe because of, the secrecy surrounding it. The magazine's staff has guarded the first issue's contents as if it were an unannounced corporate takeover offer. The semiofficial line is that Portfolio will be a kind of hybrid of The New Yorker and Vanity Fair (both, like Portfolio, part of S.I. Newhouse's privately held print empire). In other words, Portfolio will be exhaustively reported, literary and slick-–a business magazine for people who don't like to read business magazines.

For $100 million, would you expect anything less? That's the bankroll supposedly behind Portfolio's editorial staff of about 70 (the number will eventually grow to about 90), and the kind of heart-quickening figure that has helped stoke all the buzz. While Cond? Nast rarely does anything on the cheap, the $100 million figure could stand a little more context. Portfolio's publisher, David Carey, acknowledges that Cond? Nast may indeed spend that much to promote and sustain the magazine and its Web site (www.portfolio.com), but over the course of six years. Still enough to buy fine things, but more like a Lexus than a Maserati. So far, the money has purchased a first-class editorial roster. The first--and most important–-hire was Editor-in-Chief Joanne Lipman, formerly one of the Wall Street Journal's rising stars. Since leaving the Journal in October 2005, Lipman has gone up and down Broadway, cherry-picking talent. Her first draft choice came from inside Cond? Nast; Blaise Zerega, the managing editor at Cond? Nast-owned Wired, became Lipman's No. 2. Then came two deputies: Jim Impoco, formerly editor of the New York Times' Sunday Business section, and Amy Stevens, who had edited the Journal's lifestyle-oriented Weekend Journal section. Another Journal vet, Ken Wells, is a senior editor.
