******* ******* ******* Ed’s reps at Syracuse University flipped out when they met Gloria Steinem yesterday! The legendary feminist, journalist, and Ms. Magazine founder visited the university for a special lecture "An Evening With Gloria Steinem," hosted by the Ed On Campus. Ed was so nervous that he nearly broke a sweat going to meet her. But Steinem welcomed all with an open heart and mind, answering questions about starting a magazine, the publishing industry, and feminism. Seriously. Here are six kickin' things, as written and reported by Syracuse EOC President Sharon Clott, she shared about the magazine industry that Ed loved the most: 1. She wants more: "The economy of magazines has changed since I started Ms. Women’s magazines can’t get ads unless they write favorably. It’s all for advertisers. I like Bitch and Bust." Visit http://www.syracuseed2010.com/events.html for the full deets on the Gloria Steinem event with Syracuse University's chapter of Ed2010.
******* What goes into Portfolio’s new business journalism? Mr. New Journalism himself, for starters: “I’d been poking around on the subject of hedge funds,” Tom Wolfe said, “so I agreed to do 2,500 words.” The hyped-yet-secretive new Cond? Nast business magazine is sending its first batch of pages to the printer this week, in order to get the 300-plus-page debut issue onto newsstands by April 24. Editor Joanne Lipman, who came to the startup from The Wall Street Journal in a roar of publicity, has put a gag order into effect—ordering the people assembling Portfolio on the 17th floor of 4 Times Square not to breathe a word about it in the hallways. “People understand why they want secrecy, but it’s also frustrating,” said a Portfolio staffer. “You have to shut up in the elevators.” And—especially?—the cafeteria. 2. WWD
Could Richard Beckman be having some trouble finding a replacement for Suzanne Grimes? The former Glamour publisher last week left her post as Cond? Nast Media Group senior vice president to join longtime chum Mary Berner at Reader's Digest Association. As time passes without an announcement of her replacement, buzz in the halls of 4 Times Square on who will take the job continues to grow. Some insiders thought the company would have announced a replacement by the end of last week, but sources say a candidate still has not been singled out for Grimes' job. Sources say Allure vice president and publisher Nancy Berger Cardone and W president and publisher Nina Lawrence were both approached for the job, but neither is apparently interested in making the move. New Yorker vice president and publisher Lou Cona and Lisa Hughes, vice president and publisher of Cond? Nast Traveler, have also been named as likely candidates, as has Giulio Capua, vice president and publisher of Architectural Digest. But though various names have been circulated for the job, it's unclear whether any Cond? Nast publisher wants to give up his or her current gig to move to the Media Group. The ideal replacement, according to sources, is an in-house publisher who is patient and on an even keel in terms of personality to meet the demands of both the company and its advertisers. "You have to be very diplomatic. You have 29 publishers to keep happy at different magazines," said one source. Additionally, "you're negotiating with clients, so you have to like that bantering back and forth." MORE ONLINE
3. Advertising Age
Time magazine delivered the first issue of its big redesign last Friday, so Advertising Age asked an unusual mix of observers -- including media buyers, the editor of In Touch Weekly and Radar's creative director -- to play Monday-morning quarterback and tell us what they would have done differently. Richard Spencer, editor in chief, In Touch Weekly "Well, you've asked someone who created a very photo-heavy magazine to comment, and I realize the responsibility Time has to the news, but I think any magazine's redesign should take into consideration that today's consumer wants something very visual and very immediate. With that said, there are three distinct problems: The cover doesn't tell me the magazine has been redesigned; the pacing still feels a little slow; and the photos don't pull me into the stories. Robin Steinberg, senior VP-director of print investment and activation, MediaVest "It looks great: easy to read, very navigable. I like the layout. All good. It's great they are thinking about delivering news in a different format as consumers' behavior in consuming news has changed. What shouldn't change is the credibility of Time as a brand. Aesthetics are important as well as ease of navigation, but content and credibility are still key." MORE ONLINE
4. Reuters
MUMBAI (Reuters) - Hello!, the global celebrity news magazine, launched its first issue in India on Tuesday, promising to pamper readers with a steady coverage of the champagne and caviar lives of celebrities and royalty. Bigger stacks of glossy magazines are hitting the newsstands in India as an increasing number of foreign titles launch here, but tough ownership rules and low advertising yields are keeping a lid on profits. Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Seventeen, Maxim, Time Out and OK! and others are already on the stands, with more in the wings. MORE ONLINE
