******* Though she was just moved over in February to Gourmet from Architectural Digest, vice president and publisher Amy Churgin will be moving offices once again to become senior vice president for Cond? Nast Media Group, overseeing corporate sales. As WWD first reported Wednesday, Churgin will replace Suzanne Grimes, who left the company last week to join Mary Berner at Reader's Digest Association. Berner, meanwhile, may have snagged another long-time loyalist, Alyce Alston, who will leave her post as chief executive officer of De Beers North America at the end of the month. Although unconfirmed at press time, Alston, who was publisher of Fairchild's W when Berner was the company's ceo, could rejoin her former boss, who's actively building her own executive team at RDA. In addition to Grimes, Berner hired former Jane and Cookie publisher Eva Dillon away from Cond? Nast. As for Churgin's promotion, some insiders were surprised by the news, especially since she was just moved off Architectural Digest amid rumors of tension between her and editor in chief Paige Rense. Succeeding Churgin at Gourmet will be Tom Hartman, who was elevated from associate publisher. Hartman has been with Gourmet for four years and has held sales positions at Elle and Travel + Leisure. Hartman, who began his career at Vogue in the early Nineties, also attended culinary school at both Le Cordon Bleu and Bellouet Conseil in Paris.

An experiment for Esquire's December 2006 issue has become an exercise in media ubiquity, with a pro bono twist. Challenged by the magazine to earn his keep in its "genius issue" by creating a brand from scratch, advertising virtuoso David Droga suggested having New York restaurant-goers donate $1 for tap water on World Water Day — today — with proceeds benefiting UNICEF's water programs. That grew into The Tap Project, a full-scale UNICEF campaign with Droga's agency, Droga 5, marshaling a host of restaurant and celebrity partnerships. Esquire editor in chief David Granger has chipped in two free ad pages in the magazine, a big chunk of his December editor's letter and a party co-hosted with Sarah Jessica Parker atop the Hearst Tower yesterday evening. Using what Droga 5 chief executive officer and former Absolute and Details editor Andrew Essex termed "a combination of gleeful embrace and ferocious arm twisting," about 300 restaurants were signed up, plus a barrage of multiplatform advertising, much of it donated: MSN and AOL's home pages, Reuters and Nasdaq's screens in Times Square, specially designed Donna Karan T-shirts, student street teams around New York City and a free full-page ad in the New York Times courtesy of a UNICEF face-to-face with Times Co. chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. "There is a lesson to be learned, and I think we'll try to employ some of his tactics," said Granger, adding modestly, "though not nearly as well, as we continue to roll out esquire.com."

Reader’s Digest publisher Ben Madden and associate publisher Sean Flanagan are the latest to leave Reader's Digest Association as part of the shakeup by Mary Berner, new RDA president and CEO. The latest departures on Monday, first reported in the New York Post, follow the appointment of Eva Dillon, former vp, publisher at Cond? Nast’s Cookie, as president and group publisher, Reader’s Digest, overseeing the flagship and its large-print and Spanish-language editions. Denise Favorule, senior vp, group publishing director, left the company as part of that transition. Berner, who took over earlier this month following the private-equity firm Ripplewood Holdings-led buyout of the company, also has hired Suzanne Grimes as president of the food and entertaining businesses from Cond? Nast, where she was senior vp, corporate sales. “It’s been a hard and fast running three and a half years, so it’s nice to take a breather for a minute,” Madden told Mediaweek. (His exact position won’t be filled.) “It’s a great company, and I wish them the best.” Madden joined RDA from SmartMoney, where he had been associate publisher, and hired Flanagan six months ago. Elizabeth Bradley, publisher of Selecciones, the Spanish-language edition, is staying put. Also this week, RDA CFO Michael Geltzeiler was named president, Consumer Business Services, overseeing the book marketing and school fund raising businesses and Ripplewood’s educational materials business. A new leadership structure for RDA’s books and home entertaining businesses is expected to be announced as early as today.

Consumer Reports, widely respected for its independent assessments of consumer products, has long steered clear of consulting with industry and manufacturers. As a further shield from being compromised, it accepts no advertising. But yesterday, the magazine said that its quest for independence had kept it from reaching out to experts who might have helped it avoid one of the biggest mistakes in its 71-year history. In January, the magazine reported that 10 of 12 infant car seats it tested had failed simulated crash tests — a report it retracted two weeks later. A review of the incident by two outside specialists found that the magazine’s problem stemmed mainly from its decision to develop and run its side-impact tests without extensive consultation with other experts. The magazine said in a statement that it had not consulted outside experts in part “because of the organization’s longstanding policy of limiting contact with government and industry to avoid compromising the independence of its judgment.” That decision, the magazine said, “ultimately proved to be a mistake.” MORE ONLINE

Joe Zee is revamping the look of Elle and has turned to a former colleague to help spearhead the effort. Paul Ritter, who in 2004 co-launched Vitals Man and Woman as the creative director when Zee was editor-in-chief, has been named design director of Elle’s U.S. edition, editor-in-chief Roberta Myers announced today. Ritter will start April 2. An Elle spokesperson confirmed that current art director Guillaume Bruneau, an eight-year veteran of Elle who joined the title in August 1999, will be leaving the company. No further details were provided. Working with Myers and creative director Joe Zee, Ritter will be responsible for the magazine’s graphic design and visuals. Ritter previously served as the creative director of Life magazine and also directed the redesigns for BlackBook and Jane. Ritter has also designed an upcoming Hilfiger fragrance campaign for the Est?e Lauder Group, and is currently working on two new photography books with Michael Thompson. “Paul’s breadth of experience in the many worlds that Elle is a part of—fashion, beauty, lifestyle, investigative journalism, photojournalism, and celebrity—makes him the perfect person to take the look of Elle forward,” said Myers. If Ritter is to take Elle in any direction, it’ll likely be keeping in the upward momentum the magazine is currently enjoying. Average newsstand sales for the period from January-December 2006 totaled 341,092, a 10.2 percent increase over 2005. In addition, 2006 ad pages rose 14.4 percent over 2005, for a total of 2,364 pages—the highest number in the magazine’s history.
