GIVE WOMEN THE BIZ
By Keith J. Kelly

FORBES is working on the launch of a new women's business magazine.

One source said it is seen as a flanking maneuver to try to protect the franchise from the impact of Portfolio, which since it is being edited by a woman, Joanne Lipman, and published by Cond? Nast is expected to have a decent appeal to women.

The magazine is going to be called Forbes Life Executive Women.

Memo Pad: Tabloid Glare
By Valerie Seckler

Twenty-first-century Americans may have an unquenchable thirst for the latest celebrity dish. But former president Bill Clinton is not among them. "I think there's something wrong with modern culture if Britney Spears — who I happen to like — can't have a personal crisis without having it splashed all over the tabloids," he griped. Clinton, himself one of the bigger stars in the celebrity constellation, took exception to the media's ever-expanding eye into people's private lives Friday in a talk to about 1,000 media types assembled by TV Land for the upfronts.

The former president said his own tastes in entertainment run more to Fox's "24" ("even if it's on that uber right-wing channel"), ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" and ABC's "Boston Legal." Of the latter, Clinton chuckled: "The chemistry between William Shatner and James Spader is something to behold every week."

TV Land has made no secret of its efforts to reinvigorate its programming with original shows, such as "Family Foreman" and "High School Reunion," both in development. The channel, a division of Viacom's MTV Networks, hired Clinton for the event held at the Frederick P. Rose Hall in Manhattan, which was part of its upfront effort to woo advertisers for the fourth quarter of 2007 through the third quarter of 2008.

Memo Pad: Red Alert
By Jacob Bernstein and Stephanie D. Smith
3/26/07
http://www.wwd.com/memopad/article/114289

After several extensive delays, American Media finally released its financial restatement with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week. Even by the most generous estimations, the numbers were dismal and raised questions about how intensely the heat will be turned up on chief executive David Pecker.

Last year, the company hemorrhaged money, going from a net loss of $13.8 million to a loss of $160 million. The bulk of that loss was attributed to "various trade names and goodwill [that] were revalued and determined to be impaired," said the company. In its statement, AMI noted that "the trade names of the National Enquirer, Star, Weekly World News, Country Weekly, National Examiner, Sun and MiniMag reporting units were impaired and consequently recorded a…charge of approximately $122.5 million." Similar problems with Star and Weekly World News led to charges of $24.9 million. "[This] had an adverse impact on the anticipated future cash flows of these reporting units used in the annual impairment analysis performed during the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2006," AMI said. At which time, the company determined "negative future cash flows for Weekly World News, Sun and National Examiner" that suggested the publications had passed maturity level. While specifics were not broken out regarding the full extent of the impairment provision, the company noted a variety of factors might have contributed, including "expected future circulation declines and unexpected underperformance during fiscal year 2006."

The restatement of the company's 2004 and 2005 numbers was due to long-standing issues with AMI's financial reporting. The board had put pressure on Pecker to hire independent-minded financial executives, according to several company sources.

Memo Pad: Portfolio Patrol
By Irin Carmon
3/26/07
http://www.wwd.com/memopad/article/114289?page=1

As the last call on the feature well at Portfolio is made, a marquee piece on terrorism by Kurt Eichenwald is said to be on hold, according to sources at the magazine. The recent controversy surrounding Eichenwald having given $2,000 to a source while he was a New York Times reporter has reportedly made editors nervous that it will overshadow the launch issue, and Eichenwald is said to be frustrated about access to his editors. Said one source close to the magazine: "I don't think it will be in the first issue." An expensive Web video to go with the story has been shot. Eichenwald did not return calls by press time, and a spokeswoman for the magazine said, "We do not comment on stories."

In the wake of a New York Observer story that referred to a "gag order" on the launch, rumors are swirling about secrecy at the magazine. One tale that Portfolio staffers have been given special key card access that restricts other visitors to their offices is unfounded (the floor is shared with human resources, and the Portfolio side has the men's room), but staffers did cop to a closed, windowless "magazine room" under lock and key that contains the mock-ups of the first issue. (The spokeswoman referred to these accounts as "not true.")

In other news, portfolio.com has added three bloggers to the fold: Lauren Goldstein Crowe, who helped launch Time Style & Design, will blog about fashion; Felix Salmon will blog on finance, and Tim Swanson, formerly of Premiere, will have an entertainment news blog. The magazine will appear on April 16, and the Web site will go live the same day.

5. Media Week
Gathering Some Moss at New York
By Tony Case

New York, under maverick editor in chief Adam Moss, continues to make great strides on the edit side, this month receiving a record seven National Magazine Award nominations, including General Excellence. Meanwhile, its revamped Web site is building audience and last month was named Magazine Web Site of the Year in the Service/Lifestyle category in the Magazine Publishers of America’s first-ever Digital Awards.

But business-side achievements are not keeping pace with editorial plaudits. Ad pages through March 27 are down 7.5 percent to 634, per Mediaweek Monitor, even though the March 12-19 “Best of New York” double issue was the biggest in the franchise’s 14-year history, sporting 166 ad pages, including new accounts such as BMW and Christian Dior.

Publisher Larry Burstein is all smiles when talking about award nominations and spiking Web traffic, but grew a little testy when asked whether ad business shouldn’t be stronger considering the magazine’s much-buzzed-about revived edit. “With growth so strong over the last five years, at some point it slows down a little bit,” he explained. Burstein blames slow business thus far this year on the real estate market’s “shaky start.” But he predicted 2007 would mark the fifth straight year of ad gains, with growth across several categories, including financial services, fashion and liquor.
