'Child' Magazine Go Bye-Bye
By Gawker Staff

Another fallen soldier: we hear Meredith has aborted baby book Child magazine. Damn you, Cookie, you won't be happy until you have the entire market to yourself, will you? Learn to share! From the inside: "They're keeping 6 people on staff to put out final issue. Everyone else has been asked to leave by tomorrow. Nice guys at Meredith."

Onion launching video newscast: ONN will be a 24-hour fake news net
By Michael Learmonth

Long after the Onion challenged the Harvard Lampoon as Hollywood's primary font of comedic writing talent, the news satirists are taking their shtick to video.

The weekly is launching a video newscast dubbed Onion News Network, or ONN, a 24-hour fake news net marketing itself as, "faster, harder, scarier and all-knowing."

"Our competitors are MSNBC and CNN," said Onion prexy Sean Mills, distancing the new network from the fake news genre so successfully explored by Comedy Central and "Saturday Night Live."

BLOGGERS NOT BITTEN: Oprah Winfrey's power to publicize an author, a star or a designer is legendary, so naturally she was promised an exclusive on the unveiling of Sarah Jessica Parker's new Bitten line for mass chain retailer Steve & Barry's. But last week, Gawker founding editor Elizabeth Spiers' new blog site, Fashionista, published photographs from a password-protected area of a preliminary Bitten Web site intended only for long-lead-time monthly magazines. When attorneys from Steve & Barry's requested Fashionista remove the photos, it did, but by then dozens of other blogs had already posted images, giving plenty of potential customers the chance to put in their two cents.

ANOTHER LOOK: Though American Media Inc.'s restatement revealed a $160 million net loss, a write-down of its assets and the fact that the Securities and Exchange Commission is conducting an informal inquiry into its restatement — which AMI is complying with — analysts weren't too surprised by the financials. In fact, the value of AMI's high-yield bonds remained flat on Monday because the company's earnings were in line with analysts' expectations. The bonds yielded 13.33 percent on Monday, versus a market average of 7.39 percent.

NEW CUTTER: After more than a decade at Dennis Publishing, The Week publisher Carolyn Kremins is returning to Cond? Nast as the vice president and publisher of Cookie. Before riding the lad-mag wave as publisher of Stuff and Maxim and taking over The Week, Kremins worked at House & Garden and Bon Appetit. Her predecessor, Eva Dillon, launched the title in November 2005 under Fairchild Publications. Having seen the parenting and lifestyle magazine through a transition to 4 Times Square under a reorganized Cond? Nast, Dillon decamped earlier this month to serve as president and group publisher of Reader's Digest under her close associate, former Fairchild chief executive officer Mary Berner.

AMI'S PECKER PENNY PINCHES BONNIE
By Jeff Bercovici

American Media Inc.'s long-overdue restatement of financial performance for fiscal 2006, filed Friday, shed light on more than just how dire the tabloid giant's fortunes have become. The filing also included editorial director Bonnie Fuller's new contract.

Though renewed nine months ago, the details of her current $2 million-a-year deal have been under wraps. They emerge now amid reports that Fuller has been job hunting, and with speculation inside AMI that her role running Star magazine will be greatly diminished now that new editor in chief Candace Trunzo is on the job.

Life Magazine, Its Pages Dwindling, Will Cease Publication
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

Life is dead, again.

Time Inc. announced yesterday that Life magazine would cease publication next month, the third time since Life’s founding in 1936 that its owner has pulled the plug.

This time, the magazine’s demise looks permanent, largely because Life is moving its huge archive of photographs onto the Web, where consumers will be able to download them free.
