Meredith Corp. announced it would fold Child magazine after publishing the June/July issue, saying the title was not sustainable in the long term. The company also said it would eliminate 60 jobs throughout the company, including 30 at Child and another 30 throughout its publishing division.

The Child brand will continue to live online and become part of Meredith’s parents portal, which also will include Parents, Family Circle, and American Baby. , which is set to launch in July. Subscribers will be offered Parents, a company spokesman said.

Child editor Miriam Arond is leaving the company while Meredith is talking to publisher Wendi Berger about other opportunities there, the spokesman said.

Bosom Buddies

ANE Pratt, the trailblazing magazine editor who either quit or was forced out of her eponymous mag Jane at Cond? Nast in mid-2005, finally launches a comeback with her own talk radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio on Friday evenings.

Rumors have circulated for weeks that she would admit in the first show, which will be called Jane Radio, that she was canned by Mary Berner, then head of Cond? Nast's Fairchild unit.

But in Pratt's conversation with Media Ink, Pratt insisted, "That's not the case." Berner was lampooned as the scheming Ellen Cutter in the novel "Falling Out of Fashion" by Pratt's former assistant, Karen Yampolsky, in which a fictional editor named Jill White works on a magazine called Jill.

Star Struck

The ax fell again at Star and slumping American Media. Twenty people were let go, including 12 at the celebrity magazine.

Most of the cutbacks were said to have been orchestrated by Candace Trunzo, the new editor-in-chief of Star who has shoved the company's Editorial Director Bonnie Fuller into a reduced role.

Those cuts included Executive Editor Jon Auerbach, who's a former high ranking editor at The Post and an ex-CNN producer.

Marketers, Gingerly, Bite at Parody Bait

AT a recent photo shoot in the garment district, Joshua Neuman was dressed all in white, except for a black bowler hat and black combat boots. He wore fake eyelashes on his right eyelid, and held a cane in one hand, a glass of milk in the other.

It was a homage to Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange,” with a twist. Mr. Neuman, the editor and publisher of Heeb Magazine, the 5-year-old quarterly magazine marketed to urban Jews in their 20s and 30s, also wore a fake beard and the type of fringed prayer shawl worn by Hasidim.

“It’s a bit of the old ultra-Hasidic violence,” he said. Then, he asked the photographer, David Neff, “Should I be stroking my beard?”

Court Rules in Favor of Harper’s In Dead Soldier Photo Case
By Dylan

When it comes to the First Amendment, don't f*ck with Lewis Lapham.

An appellate court in Denver has ruled in favor of Harper's magazine and photojournalist Peter Turnley in the magazine's publication of a photo of an open casket of deceased U.S. soldier that appeared in the August 2004 issue.

The family of the soldier, Kyle Brinlee, filed suit in April 2005 and lost. A federal judge in Muskogee, Oklahoma ruled in favor of Harper's citing First Amendment protections. That ruling was appealed. Last week, the Denver court affirmed the judgment of the district court, finding that the funeral was newsworthy and a matter of public interest, and that the photograph published accurately reflected the image of Sgt. Brinlee's funeral and open casket.

Update—Time Warner May Spin Off Publishing Business
By Andrew Farrell
3/26/07

Time Warner shares jumped Monday on hopes that the media giant might be able to unlock more value through restructuring, possibly by selling its publishing unit.

Bear Stearns analyst Spencer Wang upgraded Time Warner to "outperform" from "peer perform" Monday. Wang explained that the company could improve share value by speeding up its restructuring over the next 12 to 18 months.

Wang wrote in a client note that one possible catalyst is a divestiture or major restructuring of Time Warner's publishing division. The company has already sold a number of its magazine and publishing assets recently.

Questions for…Jack Kliger

Advertising trends are forcing some magazine companies to make radical changes to their mainstay publications. In some cases, there is no longer sufficient financial support for a print product -- but a Web version can still draw a decent audience.

Under Jack Kliger, a magazine-industry veteran, Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. has turned two of its titles -- ELLEgirl and the U.S. print edition of Premiere -- into Internet-only outlets, their print editions shuttered. Both decisions reflected industry trends: Ad pages for Premiere were down nearly 25% in 2006, according to Publishers Information Bureau. While ELLEgirl's ad performance was more robust, Hachette knew the long-term future of the magazine was clouded by how teenage girls use media. Mr. Kliger says ELLEgirl's teen audience gets more of its information from computers and cellphones than it does from traditional magazines. What remains to be seen is if Web versions of magazines carry the same heft and authority as their print counterparts.

Mr. Kliger is looking to bolster the digital presence of Hachette's other titles, including such popular magazines as Elle and Woman's Day. Below, he discusses the changes that must be made for Web publication and pressures on the industry.
