******* Finding Factoids: The world is a wondrous place, filled with humans and other bizarre creatures, and the folks who write the Findings column in Harper's magazine give us the latest inside info on just about all of it. This month, for instance, Findings reveals these choice tidbits: "Dutch children are the happiest in Europe." BlackBerry Small Talk: Magazine journalism marches on into the brave new world of electronic communication. For GQ's special "Love, Sex and Madness" issue, writer Marshall Sella conducted an interview with bad girl actress Lindsay Lohan -- entirely via BlackBerry messages!! "Because that's how the kids are communicating these days," Sella writes in an introduction. And, he adds, Lohan is "an icon of her generation." How did this high-tech experiment work out? Not so good. It turns out that Lohan's BlackBerry text messages are about as banal as anybody else's text messages. A Vote for Pork: It's official: Field & Stream has announced that "Hogs Are the New Deer." Deer are nice, but you can hunt them only during deer season. You can hunt wild hogs pretty much all the time, the magazine reports. The little porkers run wild in 31 states, including Maryland and Virginia, and they taste good, too. And get this: "The loose restrictions on hog hunting in many places has led to a number of fringe techniques, from spearing the animals to killing them with handheld knives." MORE ONLINE
2. Sports Business Journal
While looking to fill its editor-in-chief position and facing increasing competition from rival sports sites, ESPN.com has retained its most popular columnist, Bill Simmons, signing him to a multiyear contract. Simmons signed a four-year extension through 2010 that will see him continue his popular “Page 2” column on ESPN.com and continue to contribute to ESPN The Magazine. The most intriguing part of the new deal, however, involves TV, as Simmons will help develop shows for ESPN Original Entertainment. MORE ONLINE

CLEANUP COMMITTEE: The new issue of Elle Accessories and its three previous editions are like night and day. Although magazines traditionally wait more than three issues before a redesign, editor Anne Slowey began working with creative agency AR last summer to change the cover, logo and almost every section to help the mag sell on newsstands for the next four months. "It's a lot cleaner, a lot more organized and into more sections," Slowey said. "[Prior to the redesign], we were not incorporating our heritage into the magazine's art direction." Michael Ian Kaye, senior creative director at AR, said the new design was more flexible, allowing a greater breadth of products to be featured. Slowey added that the new issue did, in fact, include double the products. (More credits, anyone?) Slowey took over as editor on the third Elle Accessories; Kelly Killoren Bensimon edited the first issue, and the second edition was a group effort, according to a spokeswoman. LOOKING FOR LOVE: Dating and mating always make for a reliable reality TV mix with a ready supply of eager participants and voyeuristic viewers. VH1's "I Love New York," the network's madcap version of ABC's "The Bachelorette," for example, is one of the channel's highest-rated shows. In early September, Essence will launch an online version of a reality dating show, "30 Dates in 30 Days," on essence.com. Essence will set up five single women on six dates with six men, but visitors to the site will choose what the women wear, which men the ladies will go out with and the New York City locales and activities for the dates. Participants will file summaries of the dates, and video diaries and date footage will be posted the next day, courtesy of Time Inc.'s new online video production division, Time Inc. Studios. The platform is an example of the digital initiatives Time Inc. has focused on since late last year. MORE ONLINE
