Stitching Up

Can Martha Stewart bring the sexy back to sewing? Maybe, if she wore a bikini while stitching hems in her magazine, but at least she can be a "sewing mentor" to young stitchers looking to take up the hobby. On Tuesday, the craft goddess announced a deal with SVP Worldwide to endorse its line of Singer, Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff sewing machines as SVP attempts to align its products with Stewart's authority in the crafting world. The partnership, expanding Stewart's empire even further outside of publishing, also comes at a time when sewing is experiencing a comeback. According to the Home Sewing Association, there are 35 million people who sew in the country, up from 30 million in 2000.

Stewart said she has been sewing since she was seven. "I was fascinated [by sewing] because you can cut up a piece of cloth and make something beautiful." In between filming several television shows daily, overseeing her magazines and Web sites and building a craft room at her home, Stewart said she primarily sews bedroom decor, like dust ruffles, pillows, canopies and bedding. But other projects are less appealing. "I don't make quilts, I'm not crafty like that," she said. Clothing is not her forte, either. "It's less interesting to me than things for the home," she said.

That said, Blueprint, its new women's lifestyle title where a lot of the staffers already sew, will feature more clothing projects. "If you saw the girls who worked for me, the Blueprint girls, they all sew. They're all making gorgeous things." In fact, during an interview, Stewart pulled over Blueprint fashion editor Katie Hatch to model a dress she made in a day.

Good Housekeeping's Spring Cleaning

Good Housekeeping is gearing up for a makeover and enlisting a new team of editors to help with the fashionable facelift. The Hearst title, which boasts a monthly reach of 25 million readers, has apparently been scouring some stylish mastheads, tapping Jane senior editor Sara Lyle for the newly created position of lifestyle editor and Lucky associate beauty editor Alyssa Kolsky Hertzig as its new beauty editor. The hires come just in time for the 122-year-old publication’s May revamp, which will kick off a wave of expanded fashion and beauty coverage. “The new normal is better, more beautiful design,” said editor-in-chief Rosemary Ellis. “There’s a growing consciousness with American women in terms of design; you see it manifested in everything from Target stores to magazines and newspapers.” Call it trickle-down chic.

Online Experiment for Print Magazine

READERS of a weekly newsmagazine will soon be getting a bonus issue, but they will miss it if they look in mailboxes or on newsstands. The magazine, The Week, will publish the extra issue online, rather than in its regular printed format. The special issue will feature articles on the environment — hence the decision to spare trees by publishing it just on the Internet (theweekmagazine.com).

“Bringing our readers an extra issue in a digital format echoes the environmental issues we’re trying to highlight,” said Justin Smith, president and publisher of The Week in New York, which is part of Dennis Publishing.

The project represents the first time The Week has produced a themed issue as well as its first online-only issue. The bonus issue will also serve as a kind of Web-based sampling program for The Week, because nonsubscribers will be able to read it on the Web site.

Jackie Leo, "Child's" First Editor, Recalls The 1986 Beginning... She is much better known for her subsequent career--from Family Circle editor-in-chief (1987-1994) to her current editor-in-chief's stint (since September 2001) at Reader's Digest. In Leo's personal Before They Became Stars chapter, she was a Modern Bride staffer in the mid-1980s, when she came up with the idea for Child. "Having a large number of high-income working couples was a new phenomenon back then," she says . "I was a new parent myself [she and husband/U.S. News & World Report columnist John Leo's daughter Alex is now in her 20s], and questions that I had personally--like hiring a nanny, setting up 'play dates,' and choosing the right private school--applied to many."

So, with Mary Anne Sommers (ex-Harper's Bazaar) being her business partner and financial support from the Italian conglomerate that also launched Taxi (the European-styled fashion magazine that had a brief run in the 1980s), Child launched in September 1986. Caught the attention of then-New York Times Magazine Group president Bill Kerr (retired as Meredith Corp. chairman/ceo in July 2006), who bought the magazine and quickly moved Leo to FC. Second Child editor was now-Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Kate White, and Leo lauds her Child work of the final editor-in-chief Miriam Arond (see below).
