Time Out Down Under & After 17

TIME Inc. itself may not be in play, but the largest magazine publisher in America has put most of its Australian titles on the block.

Ann Moore, the beleaguered Time Inc. CEO, has to find a way to make her numbers for the year and keep her corporate bosses happy.

She already dug a big hole when she kept Life on life support for too long, as the weekly newspaper insert is believed to have cost the company anywhere from $50 million to $75 million in its final incarnation.

Atoosa Rubenstein, the former editor-in-chief of Seventeen and launch editor of CosmoGIRL, may be one of the favorite targets of the media-centric Web site Gawker.com as she tries to segue into a new-media powerhouse.

But mainstream media is still smitten with the former editor. Last Friday she was on the "Today" show; the day prior she co-hosted a talk-radio show on Greenmedia network founded by aging activists Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem.

Martha Stewart Targest Russia’s Middle Class for Magazines, TV
By James Brooke

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601204&sid=am30cqS0Fgoc

Martha Stewart, the self-styled American authority on taste, plans to bring her books, magazines and television shows to Russia, tapping into an expanding middle class as incomes surge in the former Soviet republic.

`It's a very, very opportune time,'' Stewart, the founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., said in an interview today in Moscow during a week-long Russian visit.

Translated into Russian, Stewart's publications about cooking, entertaining and gardening may be on sale at kiosks in Moscow by next spring. She'll start with Martha Stewart Living, Everyday Food and Blueprint, a new magazine aimed at women aged 25 to 45. The media rollout will be followed home furnishings including sheets and towels, possibly through an alliance with a local retailer, she said.

Swapping Love Notes
By Stephanie D. Smith & Amy Wicks

Kate White and David Zinczenko are cohabitating — figuratively — in the May issues of their respective magazines, Cosmopolitan and Men's Health. The two editors in chief collaborated to swap content about relationships culled from responses from a joint survey of their readers on what makes the perfect mate. Editors from each title created special sections for the other magazine, providing Cosmo readers straight advice from the men of Men's Health, and Men's Health readers tips from the female perspective.

How did the editorial hookup come about? And more important, how did Zinczenko and White, who are close friends, get the idea past the top chiefs at Hearst and Rodale? It's rare enough when two magazines at the same publishing houses collaborate on content, much less two titles from competing publishers. And the partnership seems especially peculiar since both editors have accessible partners in their own homes — Esquire at the Hearst Tower and Women's Health at Rodale.

The idea stemmed from an e-mail White sent to Zinczenko in October suggesting they work together. Convincing higher-ups to sign off was a nonissue: "[Hearst Magazines president] Cathie [Black] gives me the freedom to make my own editorial decisions," said White via e-mail, and Zinczenko at Rodale has similar breathing room. Additionally, the readership and content in the two titles were a better fit than, say, Cosmo and Esquire. "Men's Health is more likely to do the relationship and sex pieces that we do in Cosmo, so they were a natural fit," said White. The median age of Men's Health's readers is 36; Cosmo's median age is 31: Esquire's is near 44, according to statistic from Mediamark Research Inc.

Hearst Magazines to Display ‘Please Recycle’ Logo
By Marrecca Fiore

http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=7603

Hearst’s 19 U.S. magazines will begin carrying the logo, “Please Recycle This Magazine _ Remove Inserts or Samples Before Recycling” beginning in July. The “Please Recycle” campaign was launched by the Magazine Publishers of America in February. p>

Hearst said in a statement that it is the first magazine company to adopt the initiative portfolio-wide. The “Please Recycle” logo will be displayed in Hearst magazines on either the masthead page or in the table of contents, and editors-in-chief will promote the appearance of the logo in their various Editor’s Letters and/or elsewhere in their magazines.

Hearst agreed to carry the logo as part of its ongoing environmental efforts, which included last year’s completion of the Hearst Tower, the company’s Manhattan headquarters and New York City’s first “green” building.
