Magazine Learns to Heed Its Own Advice
By RICHARD P?REZ-PE?A
May 1, 2007

Business 2.0, the technology-aware magazine published by Time Inc., periodically reminds readers of the importance of backing up computer files. A 2003 article likened backups to flossing — everyone knows it’s important, but few devote enough thought or energy to it.

Last week, Business 2.0 got caught forgetting to floss.

On the night of Monday, April 23, the magazine’s editorial system crashed, wiping out all the work that had been done for its June issue. The backup server failed to back up.

FishbowlNY: Christopher Hitchens: Va. Tech Shootings A 'Non-Story'
By staff
April 30, 2007
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/media_people/christopher_hitchens_va_tech_shootings_a_nonstory_58064.asp

Virginia Tech was a "non-story," no more important than news of a "traffic accident." Magazine editors should be ashamed of themselves for not publishing the Danish cartoons. Anna Nicole was a "fat slut." Religion "poisons everything."

Oh, and women? They still aren't funny.

Some words of wisdom offered by Vanity Fair contributing editor, author, National Magazine Award finalist and newly-ordained American citizen Christopher Hitchens at the American Society of Magazine Editors' annual board meeting/luncheon at the Princeton Club this afternoon in New York.

Sick of the NMA's, Not to Mention Beliefnet? Then These Are for You
By Simon Dumenco
April 30, 2007

And the NMA for General Excellence goes to ... Hachette Filipacchi Media! Congratulations, Hachette!

Wait, you thought I was talking about a National Magazine Award? Well, a bunch of NMA's will, in fact, be awarded this week in a fancy Manhattan ceremony. And bully for all the nominees and winners, because the NMA's are, as they say, the Oscars of the industry.

But this NMA is a new, very special award that I'm personally introducing this year. It's the No Magazine Award, awarded to Hachette for its generally excellent work in un-publishing. In shuttering Premiere most recently, and ElleGirl, For Me and Shock before that, Hachette's taken a leadership role in helping the magazine industry transition to its future of publishing no magazines at all. (Hachette barely edged out layoff- and closure-happy Time Inc.)

The Glossy Is Half-Full: Businessmen as Celebs
By Peter Carlson
May 1, 2007

"Not bam bam bam bam bam bam, but bama bampa barama bam bammity bam bam bammity barampa"

Ah, it's the unmistakable sound of Tom Wolfe cranking up another sound-effects lead paragraph. This kind of thing was new and exciting back in 1965, when Wolfe first did it, starting his piece on Las Vegas like this: " Hernia, hernia, hernia, hernia" -- 30 consecutive hernias, to approximate the sound of a craps dealer at work. But now -- after countless Tom Wolfe imitators (myself included) have imitated his style countless times -- it's somewhat less exciting when Big Tom does it yet again to start "The Pirate Pose," his story on hedge fund billionaires in the premiere issue of Portfolio, the much-hyped new business magazine from the Conde Nast magazine empire.

The bama bampa barama noise that begins Wolfe's piece is the sound of a rich, obnoxious, egomaniacal hedge fund baron furiously banging on the door of an apartment in his fancy Manhattan building so he can complain about not being allowed to drill vent holes in the walls. The guy spouts off obnoxiously for a page and half, which was more than enough to convince me that he's an egomaniacal jerk. The only problem is: Wolfe never identifies the guy. And the rest of the article is packed with other delicious anecdotes of boorish behavior by egomaniacal hedge fund billionaires who aren't identified either. What's going on here?

Memo Pad

NO BARBS HELD: At a Monday lunch sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors, Vanity Fair columnist Christopher Hitchens did what everyone seemed to expect, even hope, he would do: He insulted everyone in the room — many of whom made him a finalist for their Ellie award this year, some of whom dole out his paychecks. He compared the unanimous vote for ASME's new officers to that of North Korea's, and, asked about reaction to his arguing that women aren't funny, replied that he'd heard from plenty of "humorless bitches." (One ASME board member, who insisted she "loved" Hitchens' talk, remarked afterward, "This humorless bitch has to get back to work.") Onstage interviewer and Slate editor in chief Jacob Weisberg read selections from the Ellie-nominated profile of Hitchens in The New Yorker, then asked him how his support of the Iraq war affected his relationship with Vanity Fair editor in chief Graydon Carter, a vocal opponent of it. "The fact that most of my comrades in the media can't get [Iraq] right is not my fault," Hitchens said. A lone audience member — perhaps two — clapped.

NEW GANG: As for that aforementioned vote for officers, the American Society of Magazine Editors reelected Glamour editor in chief Cynthia Leive president, and added six new editors to its board: Latina's Betty Cortina, Self's Lucy Danziger, AARP The Magazine's Hugh Delehanty, Good Housekeeping's Rosemary Ellis, Money's Eric Schurenberg and Departures' Richard David Story. Texas Monthly's Evan Smith has stepped down as vice president, and Elle editor in chief Roberta Myers has been elected in his place. New York magazine's Adam Moss will be secretary, and David Willey, editor in chief of Runner's World, will be treasurer.

BRINGING BACK: Hearst Magazines and Hoffman Media, which publishes a magazine with Food Network personality Paula Deen, said Friday the companies had formed a joint venture to resurrect Victoria, a women's title that focused on "romantic living." Hearst published the magazine from 1987 to 2003 for women who, according to the company, "recognize the importance of beauty and manners and traditions in daily life." This time, Victoria will be under the direction of Hoffman, which also publishes Southern Lady, Tea Time and Taste of the South. Hoffman will handle all editorial, advertising, production and distribution of the title from its Birmingham, Ala., headquarters; Hearst will contribute the Victoria trademark, copyright, the Web site URL, victoriamag.com, subscription database and access to historical content of both editorial and art. Victoria will publish bimonthly beginning with a November/December issue; Hoffman's goal is to have a 250,000 rate base after two issues.

Leading up to the May 1, 2007 National Magazine Awards, mediabistro.com is publishing a special package of our popular interview series, "So What Do You Do?," with daily interviews of selected nominees, ranging from well-known to obscure. Today, we chat with newly-elected ASME secretary and New York editor-in-chief Adam Moss.

Resum?: Esquire/7Days/The New York Times Magazine/New York

You have the most nominations of any magazine this year. How does it feel? Well, it would feel wonderful if that were true. It still feels pretty wonderful that we were tied for second with Esquire. The most went to ... The New Yorker. Which, I guess, leads to your next question.

'Newsweek' Editor Blames You For Being Bored
By staff
May 1, 2007
http://gawker.com/news/upping-the-clicks/newsweek-editor-blames-you-for-being-bored-256756.php

Newsweek editor John Meacham thinks online readers are different from print readers. He recently addressed Samir "Mr. Magazine" Husni's journalism students at the University of Mississippi:

Meacham said, "people do not read long form on the internet. 500 words is the max. An average cover story of Newsweek is 4,000 words, so it takes eight pages on the web." Meacham asked the students to guess the percentage of viewers/readers who go from page one to page two on the web. "80% DO NOT... they drop before they flip to page two." And how many stay until page 8 on the web with the story, he asked and quickly answered, "My mom will be the only one."
