******* In a surprise reversal, IDG management removed Colin Crawford as PC World's CEO and reinstated Harry McCracken as Editor in Chief, after a dispute over a canceled Apple story led McCracken to quit. A memo just sent to PC World and Macworld staffers by IDG president Bob Carrigan states that McCracken "has decided to remain with PC World." Crawford, meanwhile, is being kicked back upstairs, assigned to "driving IDG's online strategy and initiatives" -- a nice, safe, strategic role where he can't do any more harm to the company's editorial reputation. It's good to see the IDG bosses standing behind principled editorial, even if it is a fluffy piece of Digg bait. It's even better to see a stand-up guy like McCracken keeping his job, while the shill takes a hike. MORE ONLINE

Privately held Rodale, home to Men's Health and the South Beach Diet series, is getting ready to take Backpacker magazine on a little trip with a new owner. Active Interest Media, an El Segundo, Calif.-based company headed by former Times Mirror executive Efrem "Skip" Zimbalist III, is said to be in the final stages of negotiations for the magazine. Industry sources said the price tag is about $14 million and that a final deal may be only a week away, pending the completion of due diligence. MORE ONLINE

CHANGE OF PLANS: Things have changed at American Media Operations Inc., now that it has finally released its financials for the quarter ended June 30, 2006 and its restated numbers for 2005. First, the publishing company might not be interested in selling Muscle & Fitness, Flex, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Country Weekl, and Mira! after all because it is not ready to provide financial statements for those titles. The publications collectively represent total revenues of $20.3 million, as of June 30, 2006. TIMELY FASHION: So, does a shaggy-haired rocker feel more pressure to dress up after attending the grand Costume Institute Gala? “Absolutely not,” said John Mayer, who performed at Tuesday’s Time 100 dinner at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall the day after the Met gala. Mayer was also named to the power list of entertainers, politicians, thinkers, and financiers that make up Time’s annual roster. SWEET NOTHINGS: Elle advice columnist E. Jean Carroll will expand her reach online to DearSugar.com, the advice site under the Sugar Publishing umbrella that includes entertainment sites PopSugar.com and BuzzSugar.com. Carroll will answer one question a week via video, while DearSugar will link back to both AskEJean.com and Elle.com. The energetic columnist, who’s contributed to Elle for 15 years, admitted she is addicted to PopSugar, and her intern reached out to the site to ask if Carroll could contribute. The twentysomething audiences are similar, and, as Carroll noted, “The Internet is where it’s at.” MORE ONLINE
4. Journalism.org
When it was released last fall, University of Georgia professor Lee Becker’s annual study of journalism graduates entering the job market contained some counterintuitive—if not downright surprising—news. Despite revenue and circulation problems, job cuts, and budget slashing in many newsrooms, 73% percent of 2005 print journalism graduates found full-time employment in their industry. That was the highest percentage in six years and a four-point increase over 2004. Becker says those numbers make sense when you consider that most starting journalists are not looking for jobs at the big metro newspapers, the category that has been hit hardest by the industry’s financial ills. The more local and small-town newspapers, which have fared better, are offering recent grads their first jobs, he says. That relatively rosy picture is, to a substantial degree, borne out by PEJ online interviews with 14 journalism and communication students from six schools. MORE ONLINE
