Part 2: Display copy-writing experts Jennifer Goldstein (who's worked at CosmoGIRL!, Philadelphia Style and Sephora.com) and Emily Kate Warren (who's worked at O! The Oprah Magazine and promotional copywriter for KLSU radio) will show you how to tailor your test to the specific mag you're applying to and how to write display copy so good that it'll sell the magazine on YOU.

Organic Recycling
By Keith J. Kelly

DON'T ever let it be said that health-oriented publisher Rodale doesn't practice what it preaches when it comes to composting and recycling.

The publisher of Men's Health, the South Beach Diet series and the book version of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" even manages to do that on magazines that they've shut down.

Organic Style was a pet project of Maria Rodale, the vice chairman of the company and the granddaughter of late founder J. I. Rodale. She launched it in September 2001 but burned through editors at a rapid pace before shutting it down in August 2005 due to a paucity of ads.

Revolt of the Page-Slaves?

“We’re never happy about turnover,” said Forbes.com chief executive Jim Spanfeller. In that case, he can’t be feeling too good lately.

At Forbes.com, the online arm of the 90-year-old Steve Forbes–run publication—which now famously includes rock star Bono as an investor—nine editorial staffers have recently fled, according to a former staffer.

Of course, Forbes.com has a young staff, with some toting freshly minted college diplomas. Indeed, two recent departures, Rebecca Eskreis and Dan Lienert, are heading off to graduate school.

Though billionaire Ron Burkle may have satisfied his temporary yearning for media expansion with his recent acquisition of Primedia's Enthusiast titles, he could still have his eye on another one, according to several media analysts. On Monday, Source Interlink Cos., which Burkle controls as a part of his investment firm Yucaipa Cos., said it would acquire Primedia's Enthusiast Media division, a collection of 70 titles including Motor Trend, Hot Rod and Surfer, for $1.2 billion. But the New York Post reported May 3 that Yucaipa Cos. also has its eye on the debt-ridden American Media Inc., home of Star, Shape and Men's Fitness.

Analysts believe there could be incentives to merging AMI's assets with Yucapia's media holdings, which are said to include culture bimonthly start-up — for the third time — Radar.

For one, AMI's Distribution Services Inc. is one of the largest magazine distribution companies and would fit well with Source Interlink, a distributor of magazines, electronics and DVDs. Many of AMI's other assets are challenged — Star, for example — and the company is saddled with more than $1 billion in debt. But analysts say now that Primedia's assets are a part of Source, AMI would become a smaller part of the portfolio, lessening AMI's financial impact on Source's overall bottom line.

Lavish new business title Conde Nast Portfolio will announce today that it will be the first media sponsor for the next Foursquare Conference, run by investment firm Quadrangle Partners.

The six-year-old annual get-together, described as the East Coast equivalent of Allen & Co.'s media powwow in Sun Valley, Idaho, will be held in New York on Nov. 6 and 7.

The general public will catch a glimpse of the conference for the first time, too: Portfolio will post a video of selected panel discussions on its Web site.
