******* In addition to being strong organizations throughout the last year, both put together great pitches that showed Ed exactly why they're leaders among the EOC chapters across the country. See below for more details about why each was selected! BEST ESTABLISHED CHAPTER OF THE YEAR: Syracuse University Leaders Sharon Clott and Jessica Prince ran an exemplary chapter with 93 members who participated in five happy hours, two resume workshops, one freelancing workshop, and one networking workshop. The chapter hosted PRINT's EIC Joyce Rutter-Kaye, Esquire.com's Eric Gillin, author Lindsey Pollak, and Gloria Steinem in upstate New York! Plus they have a kick-ass website with all their news and events, www.SyracuseEd2010.com. BEST NEW CHAPTER OF THE YEAR: University of Central Florida Led by Brittany Currier and Misty Gant, EOC at UCF really took off this year with approximately 25 members. The chapter hosted a guest speaker from Bonnier Corporation (formerly World Publications) talking about interviews and resumes, two panel discussions, and a social happy hour. Most importantly, UCF launched with few resources and little proximity to local editors and speakers, and without a strong journalism school behind them. With determination and tenacity, they created a thriving chapter that'll be around for years to come. Congrats! One thing is clear from these awards: Ed is going to be working for the students from these chapters before long! They're amazing!

******* Vanity Fair is about to get its own fictional treatment — up to a point. Due out in July, "Confessions of a Wall Street Shoeshine Boy," by Vanity Fair deputy editor Doug Stumpf, is the story of a journalist having trouble making his mark at glamorous Glossy magazine until a young Brazilian shoeshiner tips him off to a major insider trading scam. Having come from book editing, Stumpf had never been a reporter himself, so he interviewed Vanity Fair writers like David Margolick and Ned Zeman. Nearly every character is named after a real person in Stumpf's life — Fred Turner, for example, was his assistant. The shoeshiner has a real-life counterpart who worked near the old Cond? Nast offices on 350 Madison. "Everyone at Vanity Fair knew him," said Stumpf. "We all kind of took him under our wing." Running into the shoeshiner later and hearing about his new gig shining at a Wall Street investment firm inspired Stumpf to write the book. There are some unmistakable parallels between Glossy and Vanity Fair. Owned by a non-interfering man by the name of "Al Lieberman" (clearly based on Cond? Nast Publications chairman S. I. Newhouse Jr., and only coincidentally evoking his longtime editorial director Alexander Liberman), Glossy has writers described as "a phalanx of big guns who had been around since the Stone Age…Any hope of the Big Guns just ignoring me evaporated when my new salary was leaked to a gossip column, and it turned out I was making as much or more than some of them." After more than 50 years American Heritage, the magazine that furnished not just the minds but, in its original hardcover format, the dens of generations of American history buffs, is suspending publication, its editor, Richard F. Snow, said last week. The bimonthly magazine, which is owned by Forbes Inc., has been for sale since January, and in the absence of a buyer, Mr. Snow said, the publishers have decided to put the next issue, June-July, on indefinite hold. For at least the time being, however, American Heritage will continue to maintain a Web site. That leaves Mr. Snow and his staff, which has dwindled to four from a dozen, in limbo, where they have been since just before Christmas, when they were informed that the magazine was going on the block. “It’s a little like sailing the Flying Dutchman through the fog,” Mr. Snow said. “On the other hand, I’ve been here for 40 years, so I can’t really bitch about job instability.” MORE ONLINE

The publishing giant Hearst has its new pretty tower on Eighth Avenue, and it has all those accolades, too—like New Yorker critic Paul Goldberger calling the new building the most beautiful skyscraper built in decades. Now, with a spring in its step, Hearst is on its way to total domination south of Columbus Circle. The publishing company purchased an 8,000-square-foot building at 304 West 56th Street, directly across the street from its new tower, for $7.6 million, according to city records. So what exactly is the company planning over there? “Not going to talk about our plans,” said Paul Luthringer, a spokesman for Hearst. Hmmm. Well, that doesn’t help! But who said anything about plans? They could obviously run the gamut. Now, no one would dare to think that Hearst would expand its headquarters—no, not after all the praise the company has already received for its 700,000-square-foot, diamond-cut masterpiece.
