Ed has always had a few, ahem, body image issues, so he's gotten semi-obsessed with watching this Glamour editor who's trying to drop 20 pounds. (Full disclosure: It belongs to former Ed2010 VP Sunny Sea Gold...no wonder Ed hearts it!) Check it: Sunny's Shape-up Blog

Hola, Summer Interns!
*******************
You've started to arrive! It makes Ed nostalgic for his own whippersnapper-y youth, so help him relive the good times at the sixth annual Welcome to NYC Intern Party. He's throwing it in your honor on TUESDAY, JUNE 12 at the Boat Basin Cafe (West 79th Street at the Hudson River—detailed directions TK at www.ed2010.com/events.)

PS: Free cupcakes!

Ed's Trust Fund is B-A-C-K!
*******************
Pay attention, up-and-coming Edsters in the city for summer internships! Ed is back on his giving spree and is handing out two of his Ed's Trust Funds this summer. That's right—two! If you're an UNPAID intern at a magazine in New York City this summer, then Ed wants to help you out! Read Ed's Trust Fund application rules (aka: the "fine print") at ed2010.com/eoc and then apply before JUNE 22, 2007! You must have your summer internship secured when you apply. Two will win $1,000 to use however you please (but we hope you'll use it to, well, live in this amazing yet ridiculously expensive city!)

Their 15 Mins. Are Up
By Keith J. Kelly

It may get a little harder for the Cond? Nast Portfolio folks to deny that there is unrest among the troops now that a second high-profile writer on the expensive glossy start-up has turned tail and run back home.

Betsy Morris, who quit Fortune when Eric Pooley was the top editor, has been lured back to the Time Inc.-owned magazine, now that new Managing Editor Andy Serwer and boss John Huey, editor-in-chief of Time Inc. are mounting a counteroffensive.

Morris resigned from her senior writer job yesterday and expected to be named to her old job at Fortune as early as today. She is the second high-profile defection from Editor-in-Chief Joanne Lipman's staff. Earlier, Laurie Cohen quit even before the launch took place to return to The Wall Street Journal, where she and Lipman were once colleagues.

Living Large & Coast to Coast

LIVING LARGE: All those lads who read Maxim now have the chance to live its pages — well, provided they bring the beer and babes and have a passport. Come October, Maxim's parent, on-the-selling-block Dennis Publishing, plans to debut Maxim Bungalows, a five-star resort in the Dominican Republic, in a venture with Elliott, a hospitality and real estate company. Barry Pincus, manager of brand development at Dennis, said that despite the uncertainty as to who will be the next owner of Maxim, Stuff and Blender, marketing for the bungalows is just business as usual. "This is structured as a licensing agreement but it is really functioning as a partnership," he said. "We worked together on all the creative aspects and obviously, we bring a lot of marketing power to the table." He declined to provide financial details.

At Forbes.com, the online arm of the 90-year-old Steve Forbes–run publication—which now famously includes rock star Bono as an investor—nine editorial staffers have recently fled, according to a former staffer.

COAST TO COAST: Self has tapped Caroline Schaefer to be its features director. Most recently deputy editor of Us Weekly, Schaefer worked at Self from 2000 to 2002, and will replace Stephanie Dolgoff, who took on the title about six months ago but is leaving the magazine. Schaefer's new boss, editor in chief Lucy Danziger, will plug the magazine on both coasts today, starting with a "Good Morning America" appearance with a 7:15 a.m. EST call time and ending with a 7 p.m. PST dinner in Los Angeles for her new entertainment director, Laura Brounstein. The dinner, to be held at Il Sole, is expected to draw the celebrity agents and publicists who control the keys to the newsstand castle.

Magazines feeling postal pinch

THE COST OF getting magazines into your mailbox will shoot up July 15. How much? It depends.

Magazine publishers are facing a radical postage rate restructuring that favors those with large circulations and transfers costs to small- and mid-circulation publications.

Past increases to periodical postage were applied fairly equally across all publications. But this time, things are drastically different — and potentially damaging to the diversity of voices that our founders strove to foster when they created the national postal system.

Magazine companies start doing the work of advertising agencies
By Louise Story
5/28/07
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/05/28/business/nast.1-61445.php

Like executives at advertising agencies, Richard Beckman and his team talk to managers at consumer brand companies about the customers they want to reach. Four to six weeks later, they present a marketing and advertising plan.

But Beckman does not run an advertising agency. He is president of Cond? Nast Media Group, a division of the magazine company that publishes titles like Vogue, Wired and The New Yorker. Over the past five years, Beckman has developed an agency-like business within Cond? Nast's ad sales unit, generating new revenue by planning events for advertisers and creating advertisements that help sell more magazine pages

Customarily, magazine companies have made money by selling ad space in their magazines or, more recently, on their Web sites. Now some of them have set up what amount to internal mini-agencies that work with clients to design campaigns for the media company's pages. Sometimes this work spills out into other forums, like radio and television ads.

When Seeing is No Longer Believing

Andy Roddick may have the fastest recorded serve in the world at more than 150 miles per hour, but his arms of steel don't measure up to the bulging biceps he's flexing on the June/July issue of Men's Fitness.

The magazine enhanced his muscles with photo editing -- so much so that Roddick said he stopped in his tracks when he saw the cover while walking through the airport. The tennis star dubbed the hulking masses "22-inch guns" and wrote on his blog, "If you can manage to stop laughing at the cover long enough, check out the article inside."

In an age when Americans' appetite for celebrity snapshots seems insatiable, retouching photographs has become routine. But some say magazines are getting too liberal with their edits, and stars are fighting back.
