BYE, BYE, RACHAEL

There's been another personnel shake-up at Reader's Digest Association, but this time it's on the editorial side. Siobhan Hardy, who has served as creative director of Every Day With Rachael Ray since its launch, has left. (She'll be married this week and plans to move to France in July). Hardy will be replaced by outgoing Redbook creative director Tracy Everding, who starts on June 25.

NICK'S NIGHT

It certainly pays to know people — or at least to know people who know people. While many media-savvy New Yorkers might be excited by the idea of a dinner reservation at the Waverly Inn, Nicholas Coleridge got the place to himself Tuesday night to mark the U.S. release of his latest tome, "A Much Married Man." Though many in the room no doubt were there mainly because the evening's hosts were Anna Wintour and Graydon Carter, Coleridge was basking in the limelight, the culmination of a packed day for the man whose day job is as U.K. managing director of Cond? Nast.

"I went from Cond? Nast meeting to doing a TV thing to meeting to TV thing, back and forth," he said. "It was such a funny day." Nor was it his first time at the restaurant: "Graydon has been kind enough to give me a table," he said with a wink. "Well, his assistant. We all know how it works."

Silence surrounds Dennis's disposal of US magazines
By Jeffrey Blyth

What happened to the sale of the American editions of Maxim, Blender and Stuff is something of a mystery. Closing bids for the Dennis Publishing magazines closed more than a week ago. An announcement was expected within days. The word was that the magazines had gone to a company in the US called Quadrangle, headed by former lads' mag editor Kent Brownridge. It was even reported that the price was between $200 and $250 million.

All that remained, it was said, was to cross the t’s and dot the i’s on the contract. But since then, there has been only silence. Are there complications? Did the deal fall through? No one is saying. Maxim, one of the biggest selling men's mags in the US, with sales of over 2,500,000 is of course the biggest prize.

The lads' mag scene has somewhat cooled lately – and some are even saying the heyday for babes and booze magazines is over, largely because American supermarkets are reluctant these days to display the provocative mags. But there was still big interest in who would acquire the Dennis titles. The only magazine not included in the deal was The Week, the mini-version of Time and Newsweek, which Felix Dennis prizes over all the others.

ESPN Site Gets Editor
By Keith J. Kelly

ESPN.com, the nation's most heavily trafficked sports media Web site, yesterday named Robert King, a former sports editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, as its new editor-in-chief. King replaces John Papanek, who vacated the job several months ago and handed his duties to Patrick Steigman and Kevin Jackson, both of whom remain vice presidents and executive editors at ESPN.com.

Papanek, one of the brains behind the launch of ESPN The Magazine in the early 1990s, still works for ESPN but has transferred from its Bristol, Conn., headquarters to a New York office. King, who was most recently ESPN's senior producer for pro basketball coverage, was in Cleveland covering the NBA finals and could not be reached for comment.

King's arrival comes as Time Inc.-owned Sports Illustrated and its SI.com, currently ranked No. 7 among the most visited sports Web sites, look to ramp up in a bid to attract visitors.

Magazines had a greater impact than other media in the recent launch campaign of Chrysler Group’s 2007 Jeep Compass, found research company Dynamic Logic, which surveyed more than 4,300 people online from July-December 2006 to measure consumers’ media habits and reactions to the campaign.

Dynamic Logic found that magazines, alone or in combination with TV and online, drove purchase consideration of the Jeep Compass more than any other medium alone or in combination with others.

The research also found that in each purchase stage of the Compass, magazines alone or with the Web were the most efficient of all media (TV, magazines, online) and combinations thereof, as measured by cost-per-person by metric and exposure cell.

Scripps Howard Publishing Inc. recently announced that it will begin publishing Skirt!, an upscale free monthly magazine for “educated and empowered women,” this fall. Skirt! was founded as in 1994 in Charleston, N.C., as a newsletter “highlighting women’s issues, but in a fun way,” according to publisher and founder Nikki Hardin.

As a part of the fun, men who appear in Skirt! must, in fact, wear a skirt in order to appear in the magazine. The publication currently has circulation of 350,000 in eight markets, including Atlanta, Jacksonville, Fla., August, GA., and Knoxville. The circulation is expected to increase to one million as more markets open. Leanne Kleinmann, who writes the iDivamemphis column for The Commercial Appeal, has been named executive editor.
