******* Convicted sex fiend Peter Braunstein yesterday made a dramatic last-ditch plea for mercy - but his words fell on the deaf ears of a judge who said the sicko former fashion writer would likely die in jail. Declaring that this "gives me little satisfaction," Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber sentenced Braunstein to 18 years to life in prison for dressing up like a firefighter and sexually abusing a former co-worker for nearly 13 hours. "Any sentence I pronounce on this profoundly disturbed man may well result in his dying in jail," Farber said. "The acts the defendant committed were intentional acts in every meaningful sense." A friend today clued me into who is in the hunt for the Ziff Davis enterprise group (Baseline, CIO Insight, eWeek, and related Web sites, shows, etc). The buyer is a New York City-based private equity firm called Insight Venture Partners. IVP is primarily invested in four different industry sectors: application software, infrastructure software, Internet and new media, and software-enabled services. My source tells me that the deal is all but signed and that people close to the deal are surprised that it hasn’t happened yet–but are assured that it will. IVP’s expertise in the industry comes from its investments in Internet and new media, such as Airborne Entertainment (former portfolio company–provider and distributor of mobile content), DivX (creator and distributor of digital video technology), and–I love that this exists–Greenfield Online* (online survey vendor); and many others. How much they will pay, what they will do with the company, why they’re buying it, and why it’s taking so long–these are all things I do not know. You’ll have to ask your friends at Evercore Partners (the I-bank that is handling the deal for Ziff Davis), or your friends at ZD. Seriously, ask them, and then tell me what they said. MORE ONLINE

Maria Rodale has been elected to serve as Rodale's new chairman of the board of directors, succeeding her mother, Ardath Rodale, who had been chairman since 1990. Maria Rodale was vice chairman. Ardath Rodale will remain a member of the board and assume the new post of chief inspiration officer. Rodale is the publisher of magazines including Men's Health, Women's Health, Runner's World and Best Life, as well as publisher of books including "The South Beach Diet" and Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." It sold Backpacker magazine to Active Interest Media for $14 million last month. "With Rodale so strongly positioned for the future, I have decided this was the right time for me and for the company to make this transition," the outgoing chairman said in a statement. MORE ONLINE

EASTERN DAWN: Charlotte Ronson hit Tokyo in April with her sister Annabelle Dexter-Jones, twin Samantha Ronson and Lindsay Lohan to celebrate her spring collection, spot trends and, of course, shop. So it should come as no surprise that Ronson's next ad campaign will make its debut in Japanese magazines this fall. For the campaign, photographer Pamela Hanson shot Dexter-Jones and Donald Cumming, frontman for the band The Virgins, on Chrystie and Rivington Streets in New York. "Donald was in my fall '05 campaign shot in Coney Island," said Ronson. "I love Donald, he is both scruffy and handsome. He perfectly complements Annabelle's angelic femininity." No plans are in the works for a U.S. campaign, but images of Cumming and Dexter-Jones will be on display at Ronson's flagship on Mulberry Street. HEARST SHUFFLE: Seventeen has tapped Yesenia Almonte as its new beauty director. Almonte comes to Hearst from Latina magazine, where she served as beauty director for the past five years. While at Latina, she developed Latina Beauty, a publication that addressed the beauty needs and concerns of that market segment. Prior to Latina, Almonte was a beauty assistant at In Style. She replaces Ying Chu, who joined Marie Claire as its beauty director. VOTE NOW: With 20 to choose from, it wasn't a surprise the main topic of conversation at Barneys New York last Thursday was which cover of Vanity Fair's Africa issue, guest-edited by Bono, was the best. Kimora Lee Simmons arrived with Djimon Hounsou, one of the issue's cover stars, and when asked which of the covers was his favorite, besides his own, Hounsou thought for a moment before declaring the Oprah Winfrey and Madonna one a winner. Meanwhile, Simmons, wearing a Versace dress that she described as "a little small," said her favorite was — obviously — the one with Hounsou and Brad Pitt. "It was striking," she said. Simmons' other favorites were the covers with her pal Alicia Keys. Some, though, had an opinion on their not-so-favorite images. "I'll tell you which one I didn't like," said Barneys New York chairman/chief executive Howard Socol. "The one with the president on it." Other attendees at the event celebrating the covers included Graydon Carter and his wife, Anna, Tom and Kathy Freston, John Dempsey, Simon Doonan, Petra Nemcova, Tracy Reese, Emma Roberts and Jennifer Creel. I am an aspiring EA and a soon-to-be transplant to NYC, looking to move sometime this fall from Southern California (tentatively in Sept).
