******* Cond? Nast Publications Inc. is making progress with its female-focused Web sites the company is developing under its Magnet division, which includes the operation and technology departments of 27 of its magazine Web sites. In the fall, WWD reported executives were considering a health entity reflecting content from Self, Glamour, Allure and Jane that would include a Web site covering diet and nutrition, sex and relationships and beauty and health for females. The project has evolved to separate sites being overseen by Magnet's Susan Kaplow. In March, the first one launched: Elasticwaist.com. The site is written by online diarists Sarah McColl, Brooke Parkhurst, Anne Fitzgerald and a Wisconsin-based woman who goes by the screen name Wheetabix. The site includes entries on weight and body image, commentary on celebrity weight loss and food obsessions, video content on cooking and entertaining and links to other weighty blogs. Elasticwaist.com's irreverent tone is far from the edited voice of most Cond? Nast titles. For example, the authors' assessment of the benefits of fiber: "Without it, all of that protein just sits in your gut and turns into a lead sludge that can make any trip to the ladies' room require two magazines and maybe a book for backup." Up next, according to sources familiar with the project, is a sex and relationship site said to play off of Glamour. One working title has been bounced around — Thedailybedpost.com. Cond? Nast executives could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon. MORE ONLINE

Guest editors are usually of the celebrity variety –— Bono at Vanity Fair and Sarah Jessica Parker at O The Oprah Magazine are a few of the most recent ones. But novelist and magazine writer Bill Powers wants to change that. Why not look outside the celebrity pool to find a candidate, he asks? Recent National Magazine Award-winner City magazine answered his wish by asking Powers to guest edit its September issue (he also guest edited the October/November 2006 issue of BlackBook magazine.) The move marks the first time the magazine has hired a guest editor. So far, Powers has Zac Posen sitting down with Bob Colacello; Andy Spade interviewing artist Jules de Balincourt, and, in a bit of nepotism, his wife, designer Cynthia Rowley, profiling painter Delia Brown. GQ correspondent Glenn O'Brien will pen a story on the "happy mealing of high fashion," that will address how designers such as Marc Jacobs are marketing clothes to children. The City issue hasn't even closed yet, but Powers already has another guest editor's gig lined up: next time for a national gay magazine, which he declined to name.

IN the old days — say, maybe a month ago — a “customized” magazine meant that it had ads tailored to your age group or articles about your region. Now, it seems, it has your picture on the cover, too. In its April issue, Wired magazine, in partnership with Xerox, invited subscribers to upload their photographs to Wired.com. The first 5,000 who did so are now receiving their July issue with themselves as the cover art. Not coincidentally, the editorial theme of the issue is the growing personalization of all things in cyberspace, and the headline over the photo is “You are here.” MORE ONLINE

Wenner Media’s Men’s Journal has shifted tone and content under a parade of editors (and publishers) in recent years as it’s sought to carve out a place in the men’s category. And once again, the monthly is tinkering with its voice, beefing up its service, fashion and adventure content. “It had experimented with fitness being the focus and co-opting some of the laddie formulas, and [it] tried on some other hats which weren’t relevant to who we were,” said Will Schenck, publisher. “There had been this brief period where we had fiddle-faddled around with things that probably were wrong.” The update is most evident in the August issue. New creative director Paul Martinez went back to the original 1992 logo for the cover, added new fonts and uncluttered the table of contents. Jim Kaminsky, who became editor in January, gave the Health & Fitness section more news you-can-use, including stories on hangover aids and sun-protection products. The feature well represents a mix of robust service and hard-core journalism, with a nine-page “The New Carnivore’s Guide to Meat” followed by a story by John Colapinto on the death of climber Todd Skinner. “What we want to do is up the fun quotient and the humor and sexiness where those should exist, but also make it a more challenging read where it should be serious,” Kaminsky said. When Ellen Degeneres came out in 1997 on prime-time TV and on the cover of Time, it was a turning point for gay media and the community it served. At the time, only a handful of Fortune 500 company brands advertised in those media outlets. Ten years later, nearly 200 are active in the category, which now includes two cable networks (Logo and here!). Among the top advertisers are travel, financial services, automotive, fashion and entertainment companies, according to the Gay Press Report, an annual survey by ad agency Prime Access and rep firm Rivendell Media. All told, spending in gay titles has risen 205 percent to $223.3 million since 1996. Even so, two leading magazines in the category—The Advocate and Out—haven’t shared those fortunes this year, with ad pages through March down 41 percent to 112 and 15.2 percent to 115, respectively, per Publishers Information Bureau. To help boost pages, LPI Media, the print division of PlanetOut, which publishes both titles, is betting that its push to differentiate the two will help turn things around. MORE ONLINE

Just as bathing suit season is getting under way, women can rest easy that there are magazines out there that offer them ways to look good in that itsy-bitsy-teenie-weenie-yellow-polka-dot bikini. If that's not your thing, perhaps you'll be inspired by the story of a famous singer and her days as a drug-addled wild child. Or intrigued by tips on how to minimize the horrors of PMS and substitute power bars for meals. In any event, this week's crop of magazines serve up enough suggestions to ensure women can achieve wellness in all its forms. Fitness is like a trashy beach read - lacking in substance but mildly entertaining. Case in point: The "orgasm workout." In general, the magazine touts a lot of quick fixes and five-minute workouts that probably won't bring much in the way of results. Some of the headlines - "The Quickest Fat Burners Ever" and "Celeb Body Secrets" - could be an ad for TrimSpa or any other "miracle" diet drug. But in the end it doesn't matter because the mag is more about fueling that bikini-body fantasy than delivering it. Self likes to pump up women with a lot of feel-good stories and advice about people who have turned around their lives. This includes the cover story on formerly drug-addicted Fergie, who is surprisingly open about her wild-child days before becoming the female vocalist of the Black Eyed Peas. The message of self-empowerment is carried throughout the magazine, whether it's improving your sex life or doing away with PMS. One of the few downers is a scary story about the dangerous levels of mercury in fish. All we can suggest is that you steer clear of tuna. MORE ONLINE

Although it isn’t possible to put a price on happiness, it is entirely possible to put a price on the exclusive photo rights to a sort-of famous television star’s upcoming wedding to her sort-of less famous NBA star fianc?. And OK! accomplishes just that by bidding a reported $2 million for the privilege of capturing Eva Longoria’s “I do!” for posterity. Or at least, for one glorious tabloid cover. Page Six reports: June 25, 2007 — JUST as David beat Goliath, upstart OK! has given People a knuckle sandwich in the ongoing weekly-celebrity-magazine wars. Sources said People “laid the groundwork” for landing exclusive photos of Eva Longoria and Tony Parker’s July 7 wedding - but Page Six has learned that OK! won the frenzied bidding. Sources close to the negotiations said OK! paid more than $2 million. Congratulations, OK! Shelling out $2 million for a washed-up soap star’s nuptials is, indeed, a celebrity weekly coup of biblical proportions. Now, all that’s left to do is sit back and revel in your brand new purchase. Oh, and keep your fingers crossed that Britney’s next breakdown, Angelina’s next adoption and TomKat’s next extra-terrestrial bundle of joy can all wait until after the pre-planned (and pre-paid for) “LONGORIA/PARKER TIE THE KNOT!” issue comes out. 8. New York Times Say ‘Cheese’ for the King of the A-List By David Carr 6/25/07 http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/25/business/media/25carr.html It is easy to underestimate Jason Binn. He practically invites it. An antic, smallish guy with one hand on a BlackBerry and the other on a digital camera, he is constantly roaming parties for his gossamer magazines like Gotham and Los Angeles Confidential, emitting a laugh that brings to mind nothing so much as Woody Woodpecker. He may end up taking that laugh all the way to the bank. This week, Mr. Binn will announce that his magazine company, Niche Media, will merge with Greenspun Media Group of Las Vegas — which publishes Vegas, Wynn and Venetian Style, among other magazines — and Ocean Drive Media Group, which publishes Ocean Drive and Ocean Drive Espa?ol and several other magazines. Mr. Binn has been in partnerships with both outfits, but the new company, which will retain the name Niche Media, will now be a network of 16 publications with a combined circulation of 750,000 and more than 300 employees, along with revenues expected to exceed $100 million. Michael T. Carr, president of the Greenspun Media Group, said that the deal, which included buying out previous investors, will create a national asset out of regional properties. MORE ONLINE
