Memo Pad: Down to the Wire

Jann Wenner certainly likes to cut things close — today is the last working day of Us Weekly editor in chief Janice Min's contract. As of Thursday night, Min and Wenner Media had not yet reached an agreement, although negotiations continue. Sources close to both Min and Wenner believe the editor will renew her deal with the company. Besides reports in the New York Post quoting Min saying it is "highly unlikely" she would walk away, the editor has been an active participant in the magazine (for example, actively declaring a ban on covering Paris Hilton's release from jail in this week's issue). Her last contract earned her a $1.2 million-a-year salary for two years, but the Post said a new offer worth more than the previous payout is on the table (comparatively, Bonnie Fuller, Min's predecessor at Us, earns $1.5 million as American Media Inc.'s editorial director). Meanwhile, Wenner was in the office this week as he prepped for his eldest son's wedding.

Memo Pad: 3-D Details

Steven Klein will be shooting all of Details' upcoming covers, though don't expect a major shake-up of the current visual formula. "Given the competitive landscape of magazines, they need to be commercial in order to sell," said Details editor in chief Dan Peres. "Steven brings real three-dimensional quality to a cover shot and makes it beautiful, but the real aesthetic will come with the images inside the magazine. I wouldn't imagine you're going to see a thematic change in what our covers are like."

WWD reported in February that the magazine ended its relationship with longtime photographer Tom Munro.

This marks a return for Klein, who shot for Details in the early days of its relaunch. "I didn't understand how to run a magazine at the time, and creatively there were other people involved," said Peres on why that relationship ended. "It took a while for me to understand what I wanted to do creatively and have control to do that." He said the move would not mark a return to the more pointed gay themes of that era. "I think there is an erotic — not a homoerotic — nature to Steven's photographs, whether he's shooting women or men," he said. "I agree [with some critics], I think some of those early images probably went a little too far. Over the course of this past year, we've had the chance to talk about this, and we're on the same page."

Memo Pad: Rock Star

Loud applause and shouts of "I love you!" were lavished upon Andr? Leon Talley as he stood in front of the graduating class of the High School of Fashion Industries in New York Thursday morning. Talley had clearly achieved star status among the students and many of them may have given away the reason why: They whispered to each other during his speech that they hoped to one day get a job at Vogue. He told the teens that frustration, paying attention to detail, perseverance and "never being afraid to fail," are a few of the keys to success. He also recounted stories of his own start in New York in 1975, when he worked for Andy Warhol. Talley warned the students to stay humble and gave examples of the menial tasks he performed for Warhol, such as fetching his lunch and licking stamps. "Have respect for the universe you are about to walk in," he said. And while students hung on every word of Tally's speech, it was the school's principal, Hilda Nieto, who could lead his fan club. "Last night I stayed up and read his entire memoir — again," she admitted.

TIME Inc. is moving to shake up its business media operations, which include magazines Fortune and Money and Web site CNNMoney.com.

Chris Poleway, president of the group known as the Time Inc. Business and Financial Network, is out in a shake-up that could be announced as early as today, sources said. Vivek Shah will take over Poleway's old job, said informed sources.

Shah is currently the business and financial network unit's president of digital publishing, and is expected to unleash sweeping changes in the group in the months ahead.

N+1's Review Of The 'Sassy' Book
By Gawker Editors
6/29/07
http://gawker.com/news/working-our-nerves/n%252B1s-review-of-the-sassy-book-273568.php

We can't believe we're saying this about anything in n+1, which is the most important literary journal of our time—but some things about Carlene Bauer's review of How Sassy Changed My Life are dead-on and great. Like: she takes the authors to task for not spending "more time thinking about why something like Sassy will probably never happen again, starting with the oft-repeated reason of corporate consolidation... Now advertisers know that girls have money—or at least that their parents do—but what difference has it made? Whose fault is it that putting Bj?rk, Sarah Silverman, or Cat Power on the cover of a magazine has become a signal of subversion? Would corporations really lose money if they acknowledged their readers and viewers had more on their minds than sex, prize money, and violence?" Word. But also this could have done with some slash-and-burn chopping.

For example, if it were up to us, we'd have deleted the part that makes Carlene look like a sad loser who can't get over her teenage successes. But they don't mention that Seventeen also published Sylvia Plath, Lorrie Moore, and Edwidge Danticat—all winners of its fiction contest. (Full disclosure: I am one, too.) Like, ooh! Golf clap.

Reader’s Digest Losing Readers, Self-Respect
By Jossip Editors

http://www.jossip.com/circulation/readers-digest-losing-readers-self-respect-20070629/

Back when we were about 11 or 12, we made our mother write a cheque for a subscription to Reader’s Digest. We quite liked those real-life medical mysteries … or was it the true-life tales of overcoming obstacles? Either way, we kept the subscription active for a couple years, eventually letting it fizzle out for one reason or another, but probably because we realized we weren’t the mag’s target audience. That is, we weren’t a 65-year-old grandmother of 12.

Turns out, we weren’t the only ones to let our subscription fizzle out. More than two million readers have abandoned the magazine, which explains why they’ve had to slash their rate base by two million, with advertisers now guaranteed “just” 8 million readers per issue beginning in January. Not only that, but RD has also decided to start selling its back cover, usually reserved for featuring art works, to advertisers.

“We have done extensive research in-house,” says RD publisher said Eva Dillon. “Readers don’t seem to care one way or another. We thought readers would have a strong negative reaction. Once we saw that they didn’t, we said, ‘Hey, what are we waiting for?’” Good question. Um … how about a readership that’s decaying in numbers and intellect?

ut & The Advocate Only Need $7 Million By Tomorrow to Stay Afloat
By Jossip Editors
6/29/07
http://www.jossip.com/out-magazine/out-the-advocate-only-need-7-million-by-tomorrow-to-stay-afloat-20070629/

Those gay magazines Out and The Advocate are not in trouble of imploding, despite reports! In addition to The Advocate undergoing some cosmetic changes to save itself, there’s hope on the horizon. (Well, let’s put “hope” in quotes.)

In between pointing its feet toward Jesus, Queerty relays this statement of clarity from PlanetOut, which owns LPI Media, publisher of those rags. PlanetOut Inc.’s first major hurdle in its uphill climb toward fiscal solvency is just days away. After posting a $6.9 million loss the first quarter of this year, the company’s lender set June 30 as the date by which it must raise at least $7 million—with another $8 million to come by August 31.

That’s June 30, as in tomorrow (when our attention will be on Janice Min, of course). It’s going to be mildly amusing when they don’t reach those cash infusion goals, especially since the gays are just so affluent these days.
