Memo Pad: Batter Up
By Irin Carmon

Members of the so-called New York media elite have been accused of many things, but excessive athletic fervor — or skill — is rarely one of them. However, anyone willing to leave the cubicle for the ballpark can pick up enough celebrity cameo anecdotes for a season of cocktail parties. There was the year Chuck D manned first base for the Air America team, the time Tom Hanks came out to cheer for his daughter, a Vanity Fair intern, and this year, The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas has played a few games for the Rolling Stone team?

For true media junkies, there's the, well, inside baseball; for example, upon assuming the editorship of The Paris Review, New Yorker writer Philip Gourevitch pitched for both teams in a Review-New Yorker match. And, as befits media teams, games have been assiduously chronicled everywhere from Gawker to The New Yorker's Talk of the Town to company Web sites. GQ even devoted a page of its August issue to "The 10 Rules of Company Softball," acknowledging two of its own: "sneak out of work as early as possible, and, for the love of God, beat The New Yorker."

Now comes a development that promises to formalize what typically has been a rather haphazard process dependent on New York City Parks permits and proactive volunteer coaches: the formation of the New York Media Softball League. This year, charter league members BusinessWeek, DC Comics, High Times, Trader Monthly, The Wall Street Journal and WNYC radio have instituted regulations that include the use of an umpire and a mandate of one woman for every five men.

Interview magazine launches Web Superstar Awards
By Staff

http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=441342&itype=8486

Interview has evidently been influenced by the deluge of television contest shows, each with the premise of finding “the next best thing.” This July, Andy Warhol’s “Crystal Ball of Pop Culture” turns its eye online with "The Search for The Next Web Superstar.” This special online component is timed to coincide with the debut of a feature in the magazine titled The First Annual Interview Web Superstar Awards, which is in the July issue, on newsstands now, and showcases nine brazen go-getters who have used the Internet as a launchpad for their careers.

Now, with the support of Renzo Rosso and Diesel, the magazine is holding an open cyber-casting call for artists of all kinds—including, but not limited to, actors, directors, musicians, writers, daredevils, and explorers—who are using the democratic realm of the Web as a vehicle to showcase their creativity and make their visions known. “The Internet is pop culture’s newest frontier,” says Interview editor-in-chief, Ingrid Sischy. “Now the platform to become a star on a global stage is just a few clicks away.” Essentially, why go through the red tape of dealing with fickle agents, publicists, and managers when basic computer skills are enough to find an audience?

Contestants may submit their entries for stardom at www.interviewmagazine.com during the month of July. Selected submissions will be showcased on www.diesel.com and the final picks from Interview’s Search for the Next Web Superstar will be featured on the magazine’s website during the month of August

ALM Sells for $630 Million
By Bill Mickey

Wasserstein & Co. announced today that ALM, a media company serving legal and business professionals, has been sold to London-based Incisive Media for $630 million. Wasserstein announced in March that it had retained Credit Suisse to “explore strategic alternatives” for ALM. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2007.

ALM, with over $200 million in estimated revenue and $50 million in EBITDA, publishes 33 national and regional magazines and newspapers, including The American Lawyer and Corporate Counsel, and operates a large group of trade shows and Web sites.

The sale price for the ten-year-old company is on target with early estimates that had been downgraded from a $750 million asking price, according to one source. Nevertheless, the deal is one of the largest b-to-b transactions in the last three years, placing it among an elite group including VNU/Nielsen ($10 billion), Advanstar ($1.1 billion), Hanley Wood ($650 million), Penton ($530 million) and Primedia Business ($385 million).
