Fishbowl NY: Full Frontal Nudity On Time Out's 'Green Issue' Cover
July 5, 2007
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/magazines/full_frontal_nudity_on_time_outs_green_issue_cover_62396.asp

For its Live Earth-timed "Green Issue," Time Out New York dispatched Spencer Tunick, the controversial photographer whose large-scale nude photo shoots in public spaces have led to arrests, riots — and HBO documentaries — to the Queens Botanical Garden to shoot eco-baring New Yorkers — something editor Brian Farnham is calling "eco-nakedness."

Judging from the blonde gal opposite the guy with the strategically-positioned flower basket, we'd call it eco-full frontal.

ALM Sells for $630 Million
By Bill Mickey

Wasserstein & Co. announced today that ALM, a media company serving legal and business professionals, has been sold to London-based Incisive Media for $630 million. Wasserstein announced in March that it had retained Credit Suisse to “explore strategic alternatives” for ALM. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2007.

ALM, with over $200 million in estimated revenue and $50 million in EBITDA, publishes 33 national and regional magazines and newspapers, including The American Lawyer and Corporate Counsel, and operates a large group of trade shows and Web sites.

The sale price for the ten-year-old company is on target with early estimates that had been downgraded from a $750 million asking price, according to one source. Nevertheless, the deal is one of the largest b-to-b transactions in the last three years, placing it among an elite group including VNU/Nielsen ($10 billion), Advanstar ($1.1 billion), Hanley Wood ($650 million), Penton ($530 million) and Primedia Business ($385 million).

LUXURY MAGAZINE WARS HEATING UP IN L.A
By Keith J. Kelly
July 6, 2007

THE war of the regional luxury magazines is intensifying and this week it appears Los Angeles is the new battleground.

In the latest salvo, Modern Luxury Publishing CEO Michael Kong has recruited Alan Klein, the president and publisher of Emmis Publishing's Los Angeles magazine, to be the new publisher of Modern Luxury's Angeleno magazine.

Klein will also preside over Modern Luxury's other West Coast publishing operations, which include San Francisco, Riviera and Hawaii magazines.

Isolde Motley, once the powerful No. 3 editor at Time Inc., has followed her heart and signed with Ballantine to write a book for families seeking to adopt a child.

She's teaming up with Susan Caughman, another ex-Time Inc. executive, to co-author "You Can Adopt: The Adoptive Families Guide" due out in the spring of 2009. Christine Tomasino was the agent who sold the book to Caroline Sutton, a Ballantine editor.

GRAYDON Carter doesn't believe in flogging a dead horse. The Vanity Fair editor-in-chief said neigh to the idea of putting Barbaro on the August cover. Instead, "Transformers" star Shia Labeouf got the nod. Sources say Barbaro - the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who captured hearts after he shattered a hind leg in the Preakness and struggled for months to survive - actually market-tested higher than Labeouf. But Carter vetoed the equine cover. So Shia is featured, saving the actor from being beaten by a dead horse. A VF spokeswoman said, "We don't comment on covers."

FINAL WORD: So which of the weeklies won the war of words in covering Paris Hilton's release from jail — People or Us Weekly? According to the newsstand performance, it's pretty much a draw. People covered the Hilton story exhaustively, landing an exclusive interview with the heiress after she was released from jail on June 26 and featured the fresh-faced Hilton in a seven-page spread in the magazine. The New York Post reported the magazine was willing to pay $300,000 to Getty Images for photo rights, but the deal was eventually scrapped, and People paid no money for the interview or for photos. Us Weekly, meanwhile, decided to boycott the story both in the magazine and on its Web site, putting a photo portfolio of Hollywood babies on its cover instead. (Us Weekly reportedly offered to donate money to charity in exchange for an interview, but Hilton's camp declined.)

AIMING TO BE A PLAYER: A year into his editorship of BlackBook, Steve Garbarino is doing his utmost to, in his own words, move "forward and away from being an artsy boutique publication, and more a magazine of substance in investigative content and narrative fashion. Be a real player in the magazine world."

FINDING A PLACE: Yet another former Time Inc. executive is set to find a place among the private equity ranks. According to sources, Robin Domeniconi will shortly join Avista Capital as a consultant; Avista was formed in 2005 by former partners at DLJ Merchant Banking Partners. Domeniconi was Time Inc. media group president for just over a year after serving four years as publisher, and eventually president, of Real Simple, but left the company in March. According to sources close to Avista, Domeniconi will help advise the private equity group on new media deals as it looks to expand its holdings in that sector. In December, Avista acquired the Star Tribune from The McClatchy Company for $530 million. This year, according to sources close to the company, the firm has looked at acquiring The Robb Report and Dennis Publishing, and made a bid for the Time4 Media stable of magazines. Dennis Publishing eventually went to Quadrangle Group in June for around $250 million, while Swedish media conglomerate The Bonnier Group bought the Time4 Media titles in January, also for approximately $250 million.
